Case study on Kingdom tower

STRUCTURES DIVISION
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WARANGAL
Introduction to Kingdom Tower

• Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill

Architecture (AS+GG).
• Height: Over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) –
surpassing Burj Khalifa.
• Location: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
• Purpose: Mixed-use tower (hotel, offices,
residential, observatory).
• Symbol of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
The Shape of Kingdom Tower
•Inspired by folded fronds of a
young desert plant – symbolizes
growth and technology.
•Y-shaped plan:
• Provides expansive views
without privacy issues.
• Maximizes exterior wall area
for light and views.
• Enhances structural efficiency
by distributing mass optimally.
•Tapered wings:
• Reduces wind vortices and
lateral movement.
• Wind Resistance:
• Continuous taper confuses wind vortices, reducing lateral movement.
• Wind studies conducted by RWDI confirmed the design’s effectiveness.
• Structural Efficiency:
• No outriggers or wall/column transfers – uninterrupted vertical walls.
• Jump form system for efficient construction.
• Concrete Technology:
• High-strength concrete (up to 115 MPa) for upper sections.
• Advanced pumping technology for placing concrete at extreme heights.
Wind and Environmental Considerations

• Wind Load Mitigation:

• Tapered wings and Y-shape reduce wind-induced bending and torsion.
• No stepped setbacks (unlike Burj Khalifa) – continuous taper for smoother wind flow.
• Solar Load Reduction:
• Orientation adjusted to point one wing toward mecca and another north.
• Balconies create shadows, reducing direct solar radiation.
• Dust Management:
• Streamlined exterior wall with no projected elements to minimize dust collection.
• Façade access system for cleaning 166,000 sqm of cladding.

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Challenge Solution
Concrete core + steel bracing + engineered
Wind Load Resistance timber strength
Hybrid system (timber + core) + optimized
Structural Stability at 183m load distribution
CLT’s self-charring + passive fire protection +
Fire Safety fire-rated connectors
Prefabrication + modular stacking for rapid on-
Construction Time & Logistics site assembly

• Sustainability & Efficiency

• 50% lower embodied carbon than traditional skyscrapers.
• Uses 7,400m³ of timber, locking in CO₂ instead of emitting it.
• 85% site dedicated to public spaces, promoting urban greenery.
Case study: Ascent Building , Milwaukee-USA, 2022

In this concrete-timber hybrid structure, the first 7 floors

feature a reinforced concrete structural system, while floors 8
to 24 use mass timber. The building incorporates a reinforced
concrete core, which provides horizontal load resistance
throughout.
Mass timber structure begins at the 8th floor, where each
floor features 64 GLT mass timber columns and beams
