WATER SUPPLY

AND
Chapter 6
DISTRIBUTION
INTRODUCTIO
N
The Revised National Plumbing Code of the
Philippines is a comprehensive set of regulations and
standards aimed at ensuring safe, efficient, and
environmentally responsible plumbing practices
throughout the country.
It covers various aspects of plumbing, including the
design, installation, and maintenance of plumbing
systems, as well as the construction and disposal of
septic tanks and sewage systems.
Chapter 6 is essential for maintaining
public health, preventing waterborne diseases,
and ensuring the reliability and efficiency of
water supply systems in the Philippines. By
adhering to these regulations, plumbers and
builders can help create a safer and healthier
environment for everyone.
CHAPTER 6: WATER SUPPLY AND
• Chapter 6 of the Revised National Plumbing
DISTRIBUTION
Code of the Philippines plays a pivotal role
in ensuring a safe and efficient water supply
and distribution system. Here are its key
points of importance:
1. Ensuring Potable Water Supply
2. Preventing Contamination
3. Cross Connection Control
4. Regulating Hot and Cold Water Systems
5. Standardization
SECTION 601 - RUNNING WATER
REQUIRED
• Each plumbing fixture shall be provided with
an adequate supply of potable running water
so arranged as to flush and keep same in
dean and healthful conditions without
danger of backflow or cross-connection.
• Water closets and urinals shall be flushed by
means of an approved flash tank or
flushometer valve.
• Faucets and diverters shall be connected to
the hot and cold water distribution supplies
so that the hot water supply is located at left
side of the combination fittings.
SECTION 602 -
UNLAWFAL
CONNECTIONS
Prohibition of connections that allow polluted
water to enter the system - Prevent any
connections that could introduce contaminants into
the water supply.

Provision of approved backflow prevention

devices - Install approved backflow prevention
devices to avoid contamination.

No water piping supplied by any private water supply

system shall be interconnected to an approved city
water supply system or any other source of supply
SECTION 603 - CROSS CONNECTION
Cross connections are points where the potable (drinkable) water supply can come into
contact with non-potable water CONTROL
or other contaminants. This can occur through a variety
of means, such as faulty plumbing connections, improper use of hoses, or backflow from
industrial processes.

How Cross Connections Lead to Contamination:

1. Backsiphonage: This occurs when there is a sudden drop in the pressure of the
potable water supply system, causing a vacuum or negative pressure. Non-potable
water, containing contaminants like chemicals, bacteria, or waste, can be sucked back
into the potable water system through cross connections.
2. Backpressure: This happens when the pressure in a non-potable system exceeds the
pressure in the potable water system. This can be due to pumps, temperature increases
in boilers, or elevation changes. The higher pressure forces contaminants from the non-
potable source into the potable water system.
SECTION
Prevention Measures: 603:
• Backflow prevention devices : Install devices
such as air gaps, atmospheric vacuum breakers,
double check valves, pressure vacuum breakers,
and reduced pressure backflow preventers at
critical points in the plumbing system.
• Regular inspections: Conduct routine
inspections of plumbing systems to identify and
correct any potential cross connections.
• Proper maintenance: Ensure that all backflow
prevention devices are tested and maintained
regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.
SECTION
Types of backflow prevention assemblies
• 603:
Air Gap - An unobstructed vertical distance through the
free atmosphere between the lowest opening and the flood
level rim of any fixture
• Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker - Consists of one body,
one checking member, and one atmospheric opening.
• Double Check Valve Backflow Prevention - Includes
two check valves, four test cocks, and two gate valves
• Pressure Vacuum Breaker- Comprises one air inlet
valve, one check valve, two test cocks, and two gate
valves.
• Reduced Pressure Backflow Prevention - Contains
two check valves, one pressure relief valve, four test cocks,
and two gate valves.
