Look at the picture. Can you still remember
what to do before, during, and after
volcanic eruptions? Give one example for
each.
Do you plan your activities? What do you
consider when planning an activity?
Data Collection Devices

Meteorologists are scientists who report

and forecast weather conditions. They use
different equipment to study the weather.
Some of these are described below.
Weather refers to the conditions of the
atmosphere in a region over a short period of
time.

Weather affects our daily lives. The weather

today may be different from the weather
tomorrow and in other places. Weather data
includes facts or numbers about the state of the
atmosphere, including temperature, wind speed,
rain or snow, humidity, and air pressure.
These days, we have some amazing ways
to collect this kind of data. We have high-
technology equipment that can measure
everything with accuracy. We can also
measure them from all sorts of places: from
the ground, from the air, and even from
space.

Day 2
Recall the previous lesson...
Here is an example of weather data for the
month of November 2020.
Farmers consider the seasons of the
Philippines in planting and in drying their
crops, or even in doing some activities. The
Philippines has two kinds of seasons: the
wet season (June to November) and dry
season (December to May). Each season
has a particular characteristic.
A person can infer the season through
weather patterns using weather data. The
Philippines weather patterns are created
by the prevailing winds. A prevailing wind
blows mostly from a single direction. The
prevailing winds in the Philippines are the
southwest monsoon known as the
habagat, and the northeast monsoon
known as the amihan.
The southwest monsoon runs from May
to October, and the northeast monsoon
prevails from November to early May. For
most of the country, the dry season is
during amihan. The wet season starts in
June and reaches its peak in July and
September. But weather patterns change.
The rain arrives late and lasts up to
December. In some regions, the seasons
Much of the eastern seaboard, including
Eastern Mindanao, Southern Leyte,
Eastern Samar, and Southeast Luzon, is
rainy from December to March; and fairly
dry when the rest of the country is rainy.
Central Visayas, including Bohol, Negros,
and Cebu, is not exposed to the monsoon
rains, and thus have a less distinct
seasons. These provinces experience rain
at any time of the year.
Typhoons are common from June to
November and they mainly pass over
Luzon and Visayas. Typhoons also tend to
enhance the habagat, resulting in several
days of heavy rains across vast places of
the country. Severe weather conditions like
typhoons and monsoon rains can be
predicted. Preparedness during these
times is important to keep everybody safe.
Directions: Study the weather data. Then
answer the questions about it. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. How many days are sunny, rainy, cloudy,
and windy during the month of December?

2. What is the hottest and coldest

temperature for the month of December?
Directions: Supply the words that will complete the
sentences. Choose the word from the box. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

feeling cold or hot?

Discuss with the class why they feel cold

or hot.
Season
Season is the average weather condition in
a place over a long period of time. Seasons
occur due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis and
the revolution of the Earth around the sun.
There are four (4) seasons in temperate
countries: winter, summer, spring and fall or
autumn.
But here in the Philippines we only have
two seasons: dry season and wet season.
Our country’s warm and humid temperature
is considered to be one of the world’s
healthiest tropical climates. The season of
the Philippines is influenced by its location
on the equator and the prevailing winds that
pass over it.
Dry Season
Dry season is characterized by cloudless
and hot days. In the Philippines, the
climate is dry with occasional rain showers
between January and May. Between
January to February, the air is cold and dry.
The peak of dry season is April with less
rain showers. The dry season is the effect
of the seasonal wind and the northeast
monsoon known as amihan.
During dry season or summer, it is
advisable to wear light-colored and cotton
clothes. During this season, some people
go on vacation, go on swimming, or visit
other places. It is also the time for some
people to dry their crops and other goods.
Wet Season
Wet season is characterized by rainy
days with thunderstorms. From June to
September in the Philippines, the air is hot
and humid which brings heavy rains and
typhoons in the country. During this
season, rain is an almost daily
occurrence. Rainfall or precipitation is
relatively high during this season where
the southwest monsoon or habagat blows.
During rainy season activities are mostly
indoors. It is advisable to bring umbrella
or any gear that can protect us from
heavy rains or flooding. It is also during
this season that farmers plant their crops.
Directions: Study the graph and answer
the questions that follow. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
1. The graph shows the number of hours of
sunlight per month. What month has the least
sun hours?
a. __________

C. planting
D. swimming
5. The following are the factors that affect
the season in the Philippines EXCEPT
__________.
A. location of the Philippines
B. land mass
C. monsoon
D. altitude
Day 4
Recall the previous lesson...
Look at the pictures below:
What can you say about the pictures?

Can you cite the difference of the pictures?

Factors Affecting the Seasons
There are some factors that affects seasons in the
Philippines.

Location of the Philippines. Our country is

located near the equator. Hence, it receives vertical
rays of sunlight. The sun’s heat causes much water
to evaporate and fall as rain later on. Part of the
year our country experiences dry season and part
of it is rainy or wet season. This is because of the
revolution of the earth around the sun.
Prevailing winds. Prevailing winds
influence the seasons of the Philippines.
The wind that blows mostly from a single
direction is known as monsoon. Two wind
systems affect the seasons in our country:
amihan or the northeast monsoon which
creates dry season; and habagat or
southwest monsoon which brings several
days of heavy rains wet season across the
country.
Here are some of the graphs that show the average
weather and climate conditions in our country for the
whole year.

Figure 1: The graph shows the average number of rainy days per
month. July and August have the highest rainy days
Figure 2: The graph shows the average monthly total
hours of sunshine per month over the year.
Figure 3: The graph shows the average monthly amount of precipitation or
rainfall over the year. Each month, the amount of rainfall differs. June to
October have the highest record of rainfall.
Day 5
Put a check in a box under the column True
or False. Write your answer on a separate
sheet.
Write down in your paper the activities
you can do when there is rain.
In most places on earth, the weather changes
throughout the year. These changes create the
seasons. Places near the equator have a
tropical climate. Some tropical areas have only
two seasons in a year, the wet and the dry.
From May to September, it is summer in the
Asian continent and the northern hemisphere.
The land is warmer than the nearby oceans.
There is a reversal in the flow of the wind
similar to a sea breeze.
Cold wind starting from Australia and the southern
hemisphere where it is winter blows toward the
equator. Upon reaching it, the wind becomes
warm. When the cold wind reaches the
Philippines, it drops much of its moisture and
brings rains throughout the country especially in
the western part. This wind is called southwest
monsoon or habagat. Southwest monsoon or
habagat brings much rain because it picks up lots
of water vapor from the ocean or seas.
This is why we have a wet season. The
wet season is characterized by a
pronounced rainy season with
thunderstorms. Wet season starts in June
and peaks in July to September and then
falls slowly toward the end of the year.
Figure 2 shows the average monthly rainy days in
Manila.
Most rainy days are in June, July, August,
September, and October. On the average,
August is the rainiest. The average amount of
rainy days is 136.0 days. During the wet
season, the air is hot and humid which brings
heavy rains and typhoons in the country.
During the wettest month, rain is an almost
daily occurrence. Precipitation is highest in the
area where the southwest monsoon strikes.
Direction: Choose the correct words in the
box to complete the paragraph. Write your
answers on a separate sheet.

Every year, when the rainy (1) __________

begins, a new (2) __________ system also
begins to affect the country.
This is the southwest monsoon, locally
known as (3) __________, which is also
one of the criteria of PAGASA before they
officially declare the rainy season. Habagat
brings much rain because it absorbs a lot
of (4) __________ from the surrounding
seas before the rain falls. This is why we
have a (5) __________ season.
Directions: The graph below shows the
average rainfall and number of rainy days
per month in Pasig City. Study the graph
carefully and answer the questions that
follow. Write your answers on a separate
sheet
1. Name the three months with the greatest
amount of rainfall.
2. Which is the wettest month?
3. What is the average amount of rainfall of
the wettest month?
Directions: Write FACT if the statement is
correct and BLUFF if the statement is
incorrect.

1. Southwest monsoon or
habagat is a path of strong winds that
originates from Australia in the southern
hemisphere going to the southwest
direction.
2. During the wet season,
strong winds bring clouds and rain. This
seasonal wind is called a monsoon.

3. Southwest monsoon brings

heavy rainfall along the eastern coastal
areas of the Philippines.
4. The season of the
Philippines is influenced by its location on
the equator and the prevailing winds that
pass over it.

5. Wet season starts in April

and peaks in July to September.
