Air Pollution

Air pollution is defined as the presence of harmful chemicals in the air, primarily caused by automobile and industrial emissions, suspended particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and CFCs. The effects of air pollution include respiratory illnesses, skin diseases, global warming, and hazards to wildlife, with significant impacts on monuments like the Taj Mahal. Solutions to reduce air pollution involve using alternative energy sources, enforcing emissions tests, and increasing tree planting.

Air Pollution an Environmental issue

BY AMOGH VERMA 8A1

Air Pollution
It can be defined as
the presence of toxic
chemicals or
compounds in the air
that pose a health
risk . Any substance
in the air that causes
harm to living beings
and the environment
is known as air
pollutant.
Causes of Air Pollution
Major Causes Of Air Pollution are:
1)Automobile emissions: These emissions are the largest cause of air
pollution. The number of vehicles on the road is increasing at an alarming
rate. This is due to increasing population and urbanisation.
2)Industrial emissions: Emissions from industries are the second largest
cause of pollution. Most of the industries such as thermal power plants and
steel refineries use coal as main source of fuel.
3)Suspended particulate matter (SPM):These are minute solids present in
the air in the form of smoke or dust that can remain suspended for long
periods and are also the main source of haze that reduces visibility.
4)Carbon monoxide: This is produced due to incomplete combustion. When
we inhale carbon monoxide it combines with Oxygen present in the
haemoglobin of the blood to form carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb).
Carboxyhaemoglobin cannot transport oxygen. This leads to suffocation
and can also cause death.
5)CFC: CFCs cause damage to the ozone layer that protects the earth from
the UV rays. Use of CFCs in refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosols and
industrial solvents has been restricted in many countries to prevent the
ozone layer from getting damaged.
Effects of Air Pollution
Major Effects of Air Pollution:
1) Increase risk of respiratory illness and cardiovascular problems.
2) Increased risk of skin diseases.
3) May increase the risk of cancer.
4) Global Warming.
5) Acid rain.
6) Ozone depletion.
7) Hazards to wildlife.
8) Children living near polluted areas are more prone to pneumonia.
9) Many people die every year due to the direct or indirect effects of air
pollution.
Save Taj: a case study of Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal has been included in the ‘World Heritage’ monuments since
1983.It has been seriously damaged by the extreme climatic conditions and
monsoon rains which have lead to water infiltration and erosion of the white
marble exterior. Pollution from heavy traffic and the close proximity of factories
has moreover discoloured the marble.
Monument lovers through public interest petitions have achieved a
breakthrough and the following steps are being taken to protect the Monument.
1) To reduce pollution a green buffer zone (tree plantation) has been created
around Taj.
2) Various coal-based industrial units have been asked to switch to gas-based
fuel or close down the units. Many industrial units have already faced
closure of operation in the absence of installing the anti-pollution measures
as ordered. To protect the inlay work, railing barricades have been erected
in the main mausoleum of Taj. The vehicles are strictly checked for pollution
and the vehicular traffic around Taj has banned. The parking is kept at a safe
distance.
How to reduce Air Pollution
1) Using alternate sources of energy such as wind energy and solar
energy.
2) Preventing harmful gases from mixing with air by using air filters.
3) Enforcing smoke emission test and certification to all motor vehicles.
4) Using unleaded petrol that minimises air pollution.
5) Using cleaner fuels, improved stoves and better ventilation to reduce
indoor air pollution.
6) Building factories away from cities.
7) Growing more trees to absorb carbon dioxide.
