The Maya Civilization
● The Maya were located on the Yucatan Peninsula, present-day Mexico, Guatemala
● The Maya form of government was a city-state.
● City-State: a city that has its own independent government and is usually ruled
by an autocrat(king).
● There were many wars between city-states and many were fought to gain tributes as
an offering of human sacrifices to the gods.
● The Maya were innovative and achieved many advances in architecture, science,
astronomy and technology.
● Maya culture and religion revolved worshipping the gods of the sun, rain and corn.

The Aztec Empire
● The Aztec were located in Central Mexico.
● The Aztec form of government was a theocracy that
established a tributary system with surrounding areas.
● Theocracy: a government that is led by a religious
leader.
● Aztec society was structured in a social hierarchy where
leaders held the most power and enslaved people were at
the bottom.
● Some women held important positions society like
priestesses, healers, merchants, midwives and scribes.
● Religion centered around many deities and human
sacrifices were performed to honor these deities.
● Some Aztec achievements were aqueducts constructed to
bring water to their cities, architecture with urban
planning in mind and chinampas.

The Inca Empire
● The Inca were located in South America along the Andes Mountains.
● The Inca form of government was a centralized government headed by an emperor
with provinces ruled by governors.
● The Inca conquered many surrounding lands, however they did not instill a tributary
system. Instead they created the mita system which was used to require men to
contribute public service in construction or agriculture.
● Religion centered around the sun god and ancestor worship.
● The Inca used engineering to build a system of roads and bridges connecting their
empire.
