Macbeth

It is a Shakespearean tragedy. The strict definition of a tragedy is

a serious literary work that portrays the downfall of a heroic

individual .
The three elements of tragedy according to Aristotle are:
1.The hero must be either a king, a prince or a warrior.
2. The hero suffers from a tragic flaw. ( Macbeth suffers from
vaulting ambition)
3. The tragedy is full of deaths and end in death.
4. It arouses pity and fear.
“Fair is foul and foul is
fair.”
• It means that good is bad and bad is good.
• This is the first hint that things may not be
what they appear in the play.

• This refers to one of the most important

themes in the play which is appearance
viruses reality.
• (Nothing is as it appears to be)
What is the significance of the three witches
in the opening act of Macbeth? What is their
role in the beginning?

• They set the tone of dark and supernatural.

Macbeth is obsessed with their prophecies
as they have a great impact on him.
• “Hail Thane of Glamis.:
• “Hail Thane of Cawdor.”
“ Hail to future king.”
• Your children will be kings.
• You are lesser than Macbeth ,
but happier and greater.
Although Macbeth became Thane of Cawder as a
result of his loyalty and bravery in the battles , but
Macbeth’s over ambition leads him to commit a
horrible crime. Explain with reference to the main
theme of the book.
“Your face , my love , must not show your thoughts.
Look innocent, my king. Be like a snake under a
flower and leave the rest to me.”
What do Lady Macbeth’s inner thoughts reveal
about her character?

• Her thoughts and words reflect her power-

hungry ambitions. If Duncan is killed and
Macbeth is made a king, then she will be a
queen. She encourages him to murder the
king and she manipulates her husband by
using rhetorical questions. She persuades
him by using hyperbole as she claims that
she would rather kill her child who she
loves than break a promise.
What is an example of
dramatic irony in Act 1?

• Duncan expresses his boundless

gratitude for what Macbeth had done in
the battle ;however, Macbeth is
planning to kill him and take the throne
instead of his son,Malcon.
It is a literary device used in drama
to reveal the inner thoughts of the
character.
It conveys or expresses the
character’s inner thoughts about a
certain character or upcoming
event ,while talking to himself
without the presence of any other
person.
“ The back we do comes back to us in this life or ,
worse, in the next life. Duncan is my guest. And he
has been kind to me, so I can’t lift my hand against
him. My ambition is like a wild horse. I need to
tame it before riding! "What does this soliloquy
reveal about Macbeth?

• It reveals his deepest thoughts,

emotions and foreshadows the guilt that
Macbeth will feel after Duncan’s
murder. Macbeth is very nervous and
feels guilty before he has even
committed the murder.
Analysis: Act 1, scenes 1–4

These scenes establish the play’s dramatic premise—the

witches’ awakening of Macbeth’s ambition—and present
the main characters and their relationships. At the same
time, the first three scenes establish a dark mood that
permeates the entire play. The stage directions indicate
that the play begins with a storm, and malignant
supernatural forces immediately appear in the form of
the three witches. From there, the action quickly shifts
to a battlefield that is dominated by a sense of the
grisliness and cruelty of war. In his description of
Macbeth and Banquo’s heroics, the captain dwells
specifically on images of carnage: “he unseamed him
from the nave to th’ chops,” he says, describing
Macbeth’s slaying of Macdonwald (1.2.22). The bloody
murders that fill the play are foreshadowed by the
bloody victory that the Scots win over their enemies.
