ICT knowledge and
skills are empty
without a purpose. As a
digital citizen, you have
to understand that you
can bring change to
your locality and the
world.
You can do this with a
purposeful and
transformative mindset
using various ICT tools.
Today, many individuals and organizations use social media and
other online platforms to amplify their ideas and opinions on
various issues. These are also used to raise awareness and funds
for a specific cause. All of these are examples of advocacy.
Advocacy
It is derived from the Latin word advocare, meaning "to call
out for support."

Ritu Sharma from the Academy for Educational Development,

as cited by Anush Begloian of Culture EU-Eastern Partnership
Programme, defined advocacy as a tool for "putting a
problem on the agenda, providing a solution to that
problem, and building support for acting on both the
problem and the solution." Simply put, advocacy is the
process of gathering support in bringing a solution to a societal
issue.
Dig Deep
An advocate does not need to be big. You can start by focusing
on simple problems at home or in school and then propose a
solution. Remember that big problems start from small issues.

What is that one simple problem you want to change at home or

school, and what is your proposed solution?
The United Nations
Sustainable
Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals

In 2015, all member states of the United Nations adopted the

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to provide a
blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.
There are 17 goals, and each addresses various global
challenges, such as poverty, inequality, climate change,
environmental degradation peace, and justice. By
2030, the aim of the United Nations is that no one will
be left behind.
GOAL 1: NO POVERTY
Extreme poverty for all people
everywhere must be eradicated by
2030 (here, poverty is people living on
$1.25 per day). Today, more than 700
million, or 10% of the world's
population still live in extreme poverty.

Additionally, in 2018, 8% of employed

individuals and their families worldwide
still live in extreme poverty. By 2030,
1. the poor and the vulnerable should
have equal rights to economic
resources
GOAL 2: ZERO HUNGER
The goal is to eradicate global
hunger and ensure everyone has
access to safe, sufficient, and
nutritious food. According to the
United Nations, 17% of the world's
food is wasted, and there are more
than 821 million undernourished
people. Action must be taken to
provide sustainable sources of food
and humanitarian relief for all
people, especially those who are in
the most vulnerable regions.
GOAL 2: ZERO HUNGER
By 2030, the target is to end all
hunger and ensure that all people
have access to safe and nutritious
food, to end all forms of
malnutrition, double the
agricultural productivity and
incomes of small-scale food
producers, and to increase
investment in agriculture.
GOAL 3: GOOD HEALTH
AND WELL-BEING
By 2030, the aim is to ensure
healthy lives and promote well-
being for all, both of which are also
imperative to sustainable
development. This can be done by
increasing funding for health
systems, improving sanitation and
hygiene, and making physicians
more accessible to all.
GOAL 4: QUALITY
EDUCATION
The United Nations believes that
providing quality education for all is
the foundation for improving
people's lives and the key to
fighting poverty. For the past
decades, access to education has
improved. however, in 2018, there
are about 260 million children who
are out of school.
GOAL 4: QUALITY
EDUCATION
Additionally, more than half of the
students worldwide are not
meeting the required minimum
proficiency in reading and
mathematics.
GOAL 4: QUALITY
EDUCATION
By 2030, all must complete up
to secondary education, all
must have access to quality
early childhood development,
and all must have equal access
to affordable and quality
technical, vocational, and
tertiary education, among
others.
GOAL 5: GENDER
EQUALITY
Gender is equally essential to
achieve peace and prosperity
among people. Compared to the
past decade more women now
receive formal education, the
number of girls forced into early
marriage is decreasing, and
women are forced to take part in
government.
GOAL 5: GENDER
EQUALITY
However, despite progress in
gender equality, violence against
women is still rampant. As a
matter of fact, according to the
United Nations, 1 out 3 women
ages 15 to 43 is atrium of physical
and sexual violence.
GOAL 6: CLEAN
WATER AND
SANITATION
Every country wants to ensure
that by 2030, all people have
universal and equitable access to
safe and affordable drinking water
and access to adequate and
equitable sanitation and hygiene
Up to now, there are till areas that
do not have access to potable
water and still practice open
defecation.
GOAL 7: AFFORDABLE
AND CLEAN ENERGY
One of the goals of sustainable
development is to ensure that all
people have access to affordable,
reliable, and modern energy.

Every country leader must focus

on providing clean and safe
cooking fuels and technologies,
empowering the use of
renewable energy, and improving
electrical infrastructure to the
same regions.
GOAL 8: DECENT WORK
AND ECONOMIC
GROWTH
Improved living standards and
quality jobs are just a few of the
products of a sustainable
economic growth.

A decent and stable job will help

people succeed against poverty
So, empowering the economy of
every country is one of the goals
of the United Nations, which will
eventually create more job
opportunities or all .
GOAL 9:
INDUSTRY,
INNOVATION, AND
INFRASTRUCTURE
There are still areas in
developing countries that have
inaccessible roads and do not
get enough dean, water,
sanitation, and electricity.
GOAL 10: REDUCED
INEQUALITIES
Inequality is still prevalent up to now.
As a matter of fact, majority of the
income goes to the top 1% of the
global population. Inequality results in
poverty, which may also breed
crimes, diseases, and environmental
degradation.

So, it is important to give focus on

promoting inclusive social and
economic growth where everyone has
an equal opportunity to have a
GOAL 11: SUSTAINABLE
CITIES AND
COMMUNITIES
According to the United Nations, 9 out
of 10 individuals residing in urban
areas breathe polluted air which is
bad for their health. By 2030, the
target is that all should have access
to adequate, safe, and affordable
housing and transport systems.
GOAL 12:
RESPONSIBLE
CONSUMPTION AND
PRODUCTION
Should the population reach 9.6 billion
by 2050, some people say it would
take the resources of all three planets
for the population to sustain their
current lifestyles. If people will not
change their consumption and
production patterns, the environment
may suffer. There are two main ways
to help reduce waste and buy
sustainable products.
GOAL 13: CLIMATE
CHANGE
Greenhouse gas levels are increasing,
and their impact is evident worldwide.
Severe weather and rising sea levels
affect people’s lives, so, immediate
action is required.
GOAL 14: LIFE BELOW
WATER
The goal is to manage the use of
marine resources. The issue that
needs to be addressed now is the
increasing levels of debris in the
oceans, which may kill organisms or
may prevent them from reproducing
when consumed.
GOAL 15: LIFE ON
LAND to the United Nations, there
According
are about 1 million species of plants
and animals that are at rel of
extinction, and about 1.6 billion people
depend on forests for their living. So,
the goal is to sustainably manage
forests and stop desertification, land
degradation, and anything that may
further biodiversity less.
GOAL 16: PEACE,
JUSTICE, AND STRONG
INSTITUTIONS
This goal aims to address corruption,
crime, and human rights violations
around the globe. The United Nations
believes that sustainable development
goals can be achieved when there are
peaceful, just, and inclusive
communities.
GOAL 17: PARTNERSHIP
This goal aims to address corruption,
crime, and human rights violations
around the globe. The United Nations
believes that sustainable development
goals can be achieved when there are
peaceful, just, and inclusive
communities.
GOAL 17: PARTNERSHIP
This goal aims to address corruption,
crime, and human rights violations
around the globe. The United Nations
believes that sustainable development
goals can be achieved when there are
peaceful, just, and inclusive
communities.
Dig Deep
Many nations in the world are helping one another to alleviate
poverty, hunger, and violence. Just like in your community,
cooperation, and unity are needed to achieve peace and
prosperity.

What do you think would happen if the leaders of different

nations were not united? Support your answer.
Your Digital Advocacy Project
The following are the steps in designing an effective
advocacy project according to Anush Begi writer of
The Advocacy Course in Culture EU-Eastern
Partnership Programme:
1. Identifying and Analyzing the Issue
For you to come up with the right solution,
identifying the root cause of the problem is
required This is the most challenging part of
designing a plan. Identifying then its branches
helps you to more effort and resources into the
main source of the problem, not on its branches.
2. Mapping the External Environment
After identifying the issue, the next step that you
need to do is to understand the external factors
that may influence the advocacy effort.
Remember to check how these external factors
may affect campaign beneficiaries, donors, and
other stakeholders who may have an influence
on the project. .
2. Mapping the External Environment
Remember to check how these external factors
may affect campaign beneficiaries, donors, and
other stakeholders who may influence the project.
These include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Politicians
• Civil servants
• Religious leaders and organizations
• Business leaders and associations.
• Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and
teachers
2. Mapping the External Environment
• Media companies
• Nongovernment organizations
• Regional and international institutions
such as the European Union and the United
Nations
• Consumer groups
• Women's groups
2. Mapping the External Environment
You should need to determine also the
stakeholders of the advocacy campaign who
are usually divided into four groups:
•Targets. They are the ones who have the
power to make decisions and effect change in
the community.

•Constituents. These refer to the beneficiaries

of the advocacy effort.
2. Mapping the External Environment
You should need to determine also the
stakeholders of the advocacy campaign who are
usually divided into four groups:
•Allies. These are the people who may help you
in putting up the project. They are also the ones
who can help you influence the decision-makers.
•Opponents. These pertain to people who may
oppose your campaign effort.
3. Lobbying, Influencing, and Getting
Your Voice Heard
An advocacy project will not be successful
without the support of people; so, mass
recruitment is needed.
3. Lobbying, Influencing, and Getting
Your Voice Heard
Here are the things you need to take
note of in terms of mass recruitment:
•Put up activities that will raise awareness for
undecided individuals.
•Look for people who have the potential to
share your views.
3. Lobbying, Influencing, and Getting
Your Voice Heard
Here are the things you need to take note of
in terms of mass recruitment:
•As much as possible, avoid opponents of your
advocacies or at least be careful as to what you
say to them.
•Reach out to individuals who influence your
community (e.g. social media influencers).
•Pick a trusted, known person to present the
argument
3. Lobbying, Influencing, and Getting
Your Voice Heard
These are just a few of the tools or platforms
that you can use in communicating your
advocacy: •
•Leaflets, posters, and other printed materials
•Media such as TV, radio, newspaper
•Public meetings
•Celebrity endorsements
•Petitions Websites, social media, and other online
platforms
Lobbying
It is a group of people, typically an
organization, who attempt to influence
decision-makers in favor of your advocacy. You
can set an appointment with your targets
regarding your campaign effort.
