KNX Training

The document provides an overview of KNX, a standard for home and building automation that enables efficient management of various systems such as heating, lighting, and security through a unified communication protocol. It outlines the objectives of the KNX Association, the technical proposal for decentralized automation, and the different transmission methods available for KNX installations. Additionally, it includes a tutorial on using ETS software for project creation, device programming, and practical application examples for controlling lighting, dimming, and shutters.

Electrical Installations

KNX training
Tutorial

Paulo Medeiros – Vocational Trainer Electrical Installations

A brief introduction to KNX

There is a growing demand for

the comfortable and versatile
management of heating,
lighting, and access control
systems in both homes and
office complexes. Concurrently,
the need for efficient energy use
is becoming more critical.
People desire environments that
are comfortable, sustainable,
and safe, which underscores the
importance of automation.
Realizing the automation dream

Automation doesn't have to be difficult. It simply

requires a system that does away with the problems of
isolated devices by ensuring that all components
communicate via one common language. The kind of
device you want to use doesn't matter anymore.
Whether you want to control lighting, shutters,
security systems, energy management, heating,
ventilation, air-conditioning systems, signaling and
monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building
control systems, remote control, audio and video
control,... All these functions work via an uniform
system. This is called the principle of interworking.
This is home and building control made easy. This is
Objectives of the KNX Association

• Definition of a totally open standard (KNX) for home

automation applications;

• Consolidation of its brand (KNX), as a symbol of

quality and, above all, interoperability between
different manufacturers;

• Making KNX a European and worldwide standard in

home automation and intelligent installations;
Technical Proposal

• It uses the principles of decentralized automation

(saving on cables by no longer running unnecessary
routes);
• Use of a single system for lighting, blinds, air
conditioning, security, etc., reducing the complexity
of the installation;
• Interoperability between manufacturers, allowing
the user to use several brands simultaneously.
Transmission Methods

There are 4 different transmission media that can be

used in a KNX installation:

• Twisted Pair (TP1):

• Power Line (PL):
• Radio Frequency (RF):
• KNX Net/IP
Twisted Pair (TP1)

Simple and highly reliable transmission medium, using

standard cable:
- Two pairs: one for the BUS (29V) and a second for
other applications;
- It has a mesh resistance of 75 ohm and a mesh
capacitance of 100 nf for 1000m.
Micro Push Wire

• It can be used for splices, extensions or bus

connections;

• The bus cable must always end in this connector;

• Allows a component to be removed from the bus

without disconnecting the bus;

• Safe separation of conductors (positive and

negative).
How KNX Works

• Sensors send information in telegrams;

• Telegrams arrive on all devices (unless filtered);
• Telegrams have an address (group address);
• Receiving devices analyze whether there is a
communication object with that address and, if so,
take action.
ETS

ETS5 is the software used for commissioning and

diagnostics in KNX.
Introduction to ETS

• Create projects;
• Working with tabs and shortcuts;
• Importing catalogs;
• Create topology;
• Adding devices to the installation;
• Programming the physical addresses of devices.

Now you need to find your devices. You can use the device code to do this.

Example:

AWBS-04/06.2

17
Create Topology

Open the Topology

18
Importing catalogs

Click here

19
Adding devices to the installation

Click here
Click and drag the device to 1.1 TP line

Note: You must do this for the other remaining devices

21
Programming the physical addresses of
devices.

Click in Download Individual Address

Note: Each device has its own individual address. You must do this for each device.

22
Programming the physical addresses of
devices.
To download an individual device, press the parameterization button of the device you want to download.
Examples:

23
Application Example
You need to create a button on the touch panel to turn the E output of the Switch Actuator on and off

Step 1: Open Group Addresses

24
Application Example

Right-click on Group Addresses

and then click Add Main Groups.

25
Application Example

Put the name in the Main Group

26
Application Example

- Add Middle Groups

27
Application Example

Choose a name for the group

28

Add Group Addresses

32

Click and drag to the group

33
Application Example

Click and drag to the group

34
Application Example
Now you've put the input and output in the same group, you can download the devices.

Note: You must download the Switch Actuator and Touch Control

35
Task 1 - Switch
Now you've put the input and output in the same group, you can download the devices.

Now it's your turn. Create a button on the touch control for each output of the Switch Actuator.

• Button 1 - turns output A on and off;

• Button 2 - turns output C on and off;
• Button 3 - turns output D on and off;
• Button 4 - turns output E on and off;
• Button 5 - turns output F on and off;

36
Example – Dimming
You can control the brightness of the lamp via the dimmer.

In the touch control parameters in icon 6 you must set the

Switch / dim function.

37
Example – Dimming

Add other Group Addresses

38
Example – Dimming

You should create two groups, one for the ON/OFF switch (1
bit) another for the dimmer (4 bits) and other group for the
STATUS (1 Byte)

39
Example – Dimming

Click and drag the Page 1 – Icon 6 Switching option to the Switch ON/OFF group

40
Example – Dimming

Click and drag the Page 1 – Icon 6 Dimming option to the Dimming group

41
Example – Dimming
Note: You have now added the entries to the group. Now you need to add the outputs.

In the dimmer's parameters you

have to change to control the
channels individually (in this case
you have two channels, A and B, so
you can control each lamp
individually).

42
Example – Dimming

You should change the status to via

separate object, because you need to use
this information to control the brightness
of the lamp

43
Example – Dimming

In this example we will only use output A. You must click and
drag the Output A Switch object to the Switch ON/OFF group.

44
Example – Dimming

Add the Output A Relative Dimming object to the Dimming group.

Note: notice that the switch object has 1 bit and the Relative dimming object has 4 bits.

45
Example – Dimming

Add the Dim Value and Status dim value to the STATUS group.

46
Example – Dimming

Click and drag in Brightness value and status byte for the
STATUS group

47
Example – Dimming

You can now download the dimmer and touch control

48
Task 2 – Dimming
Now it's your turn. Create a button on the touch control for each output of the Switch Actuator and a button
to dimming the output A and B of the Dimmer Actuator.

Touch Control:

• Button 1 - turns output A on and off;

• Button 2 - turns output C on and off;
• Button 3 - turns output D on and off;
• Button 4 - turns output E on and off;
• Button 5 - turns output F on and off;
• Button 6 – Switch ON / OFF and Dimming Output A
• Button 7 – Switch ON / OFF and Dimming Output B

49
Example – Shutter
In KNX, besides controlling lighting, you can have control
of blinds.

50
Example – Shutter
To control the roller shutter you need to follow these steps:

Add new group address

51
Example – Shutter

Change working mode for Shutter

Add new group address

52
Example – Shutter

Click and drag the Move Shutter Up/Down object to the group

53
Example – Shutter

In the Touch Control parameters, use Icon 8 and change the

function to Roller Shutter. You can change the description and
icon too

54
Example – Shutter

Click and drag the Up / Down object into the group. After that, you
can download the devices

55
Example – Shutter

Create shutter STATUS group

56
