Layla Project

The document presents a problem involving the cost of notebooks and pens, leading to the equations 3x + 5y = 41 and 6x + 8y = 74. Using graphical, elimination, and substitution methods, the solution reveals that the cost of each notebook is SAR 7 and each pen is SAR 4. The author expresses a preference for the elimination method due to its simplicity.

Three notebooks and 5 pens cost SAR 41.

Buying 6 notebooks and 8 pens cost SAR 74

SAR. Use graphical method to determine how much is the cost per piece of the
notebook and the cost per piece of the pen?

Solution:
Let x be the cost of one notebook and y be the cost of one pen.

Three notebooks and 5 pens cost SAR 41: 3x + 5y = 41 (line 1)

Six notebooks and 8 pens cost SAR 74: 6x + 8y = 74 (line 2)
Method 1: Graphical Method

3x+ 5y = 41
x 3x+5y=41 y
0 3(0)+5y=41 41/5
1 3(1)+5y=41 38/5

6x+ 8y =74
X 6x+8y=74 y
0 6(0)+8y=74 37/4
1 6(1)+8y=74 34/4

The point of intersection of the two lines: 3x + 5y = 41 and 6x + 8y = 74 is (7, 4)

Analysis:
The point of intersection of the two lines represents the price of each
notebook (x-coordinate) and the price of each pen (y-coordinate)

So, if (7,4) is the point where x = 7 and y = 4 then the price of each
notebook is SAR 7 and the price of each pen is SAR 4.
Method 2: Elimination Method

Let x be the cost of one notebook and y be the cost of one pen.

Three notebooks and 5 pens cost SAR 41: 3x + 5y = 41 (eq 1)

Six notebooks and 8 pens cost SAR 74: 6x + 8y = 74 (eq 2)
To eliminate x:
Multiply eq 1 by -2 to obtain: -2(3x+5y = 41) –6x – 10 y = –82
Add the eq 2 to eq 1: + 6x + 8y = 74__
- 2y = - 8
y=4
We substitute y = 4 to eq 1: 3x + 5y = 41 3x + 5(4) = 41
3x = 41 – 20
3x = 21
x=7
Hence the price of one notebook is SAR 7 and the price of one pen is SAR 4
Method 3: Substitution Method
Let x be the cost of one notebook and y be the cost of one pen.
Three notebooks and 5 pens cost SAR 41: 3x + 5y = 41 (eq 1)
Six notebooks and 8 pens cost SAR 74: 6x + 8y = 74 (eq 2)
In equation 1, we solve for x in terms of y: 3x= 41 – 5y
Substitute the result to eq. 2:

82 - 10y + 8y = 74
-2y = - 8
y=4
Substitude y = 4 to
Hence the price of one notebook is SAR 7 and the price of one pen is SAR 4
Reflection:
• I prefer to solve the given problem using Elimination method and this
is my favorite. This method is the easiest for me for it avoids the use
of fraction and obtaining the answer doesn’t need too complex
method. Adding/ subtracting equations is very easy to follow and can
be done using simple ways only.
