Objectives
At the end of teaching students will be able to:-
• introduction of pneumonia.
• definition of pneumonia.
• causes of pneumonia
• types of Pneumonia.
• stages of pneumonia.
• pathophysiology of Pneumonia.
• clinical features and diagnostic evaluation of pneumonia
• complications of pneumonia.
• Management of pneumonia
Introduction
• Pneumonia is an Infection of the lung.
• The term pneumonia is used to describe
inflammation of parenchymal structures
of the lung, such as the alveoli and the
bronchioles.
Definition
Pneumonia is defined as acute inflammation and
consolidation of lung tissue( parenchyma).
Causes of pneumonia
• Bacteria:- pneumococcus,Streptococcus, Staphylococcus.
• Virus:- Adenovirus.
• Fungi:- Histoplasmosis.
• Protozoa:- Entamoeba histolytica
OTHER CAUSES:-
• Aspiration of food, drowning.
• Hypersensitivity to inhaled dust.
TYPES OF PNEUMONIA

Stages of pneumonia

Clinical Features
• High fever with chills.
• Cough with thick sputum.
• Chest pain.
• Increased respiratory rate.
• Running nose.
• Wheezing sound.
• Hoarseness of voice
• Cyanosis.
Diagnostic Evaluation
• Chest X-ray.
• Lung biopsy.
• Sputum test.
Complications
• Fungal infections:-
Amphotericin B 1.5 mg/kg
Fluconazole 12 mg/kg
Sulfonamides 7.5 mg /kg
Surgical management
• Chest tubes:- Drain air, blood
or fluid from pleural space, the
area around the lungs.
• Lobectomy:- Removes the
affected lobe of lung.
• Thoracotomy:- Incision in
chest to remove damaged lung
tissue.
Conclusion
Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that
affects the lungs. When an individual has Pneumonia,
the alveoli are filled with Pus and fluid, which makes
breathing painful and limits oxygen intake.
Summarization
RECAPTUALIZATION
What are the stages of Pneumonia?
Assignment prepare a nursing
care plan on pneumonia.
BIBLIOGRAPHY
Nursing Management
Assessment:-
• Assess respiratory symptoms:- Fever , chills.
• Assess clinical Manifestations:- Pain, fatigue.
• Physical Assessment
Nursing diagnosis
• Impaired gas exchange related to alveolar capillary
membrane changes as evidenced by tachycardia.
• Imbalanced nutrition less than body requirement
related to disease condition as evidenced by Refusal of
food.
• Inadequate sleep pattern related to respiratory distress.
