Subject- verb
Agreement
SUBJECT- VERB AGREEMENT OCCURS
WHEN THE SUBJECT AND VERB
ENDINGS AGREE IN NUMBER AND
PERSON. THE SUBJECT OF EVERY
SENTENCE IS SINGULAR OR PLURAL
AND THAT DETERMINES THE ENDING
OF THE VERB.
1. singular
Singular noun, pronoun, and nouns that cannot
be counted such as news, time, and happiness
etc. take verbs with singular endings.
 Time flies.
 He speaks English.
 The news is interesting.
2. Plural

Plural nouns and pronouns take verbs

with plural endings.
 These shoes are expensive.
They swim.
3. Compound subjects

Subjects joined by and take a plural verb.

The dog and the cat are running around the

tree.
He and I are studying together.
He and his mother are going to the park.
4. Either/or subjects

When the subject words are joined by either……or,

neither…..nor, or not only… but also, the verb agrees
with the closest subject word.

 Either Ali or his class fellows are going on picnic.

 Neither the students nor the teacher is ready for the
performance.
 Not only the passengers but also the driver was
injured.
5. indefinites as
subjects
Indefinite words such as each, every, and any take a singular verb
when (1) they are the subject words or (2) they precede the
subject word.
 Each has his own choice.
 Every student is interested in English.
However, when indefinite words such as none, some, most or all
are the subjects, the number of the verb depends on the meaning
of the subject.
 Some of the book is very interesting.
 Some of us are not prepared for the exam.
6. Linking verbs
Linking verbs agree with the
subject rather than the words that
follow.
Islamic books are my favorite
reading matter.
His problem is making so many
7. as well as, along with,
together with, with
These are not part of the subject and the verb agrees
with the subject alone.

 The politician, along with his friends, is coming.

 He, together with his friends, was absent from the
class.
 The principal as well as the teachers is attending the
seminar.
