Net Difference Vegetation Index

The document provides an overview of the Net Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), including its historical development from the 1970s to present applications in agriculture and environmental monitoring. NDVI is defined as a measure of vegetation health based on spectral reflectance, with values ranging from -1 to 1. Despite some limitations, advancements in technology are enhancing its accuracy and accessibility for various applications.

A brief history of NDVI
 1970s:
•Concept of using visible and near-infrared light for vegetation assessment
introduced.
•NDVI formula developed by Rouse et al. (1974).
 1980s:
•Application of NDVI to satellite imagery for large-scale vegetation monitoring.
•First NDVI images generated from satellites.
 1990s:
•Use of NDVI for monitoring agricultural crop health and productivity.
•Application to forest and rangeland ecosystems.
 Present:
•Increased accessibility and widespread use of NDVI with high-resolution
satellite imagery and UAVs.
•Diverse applications in agriculture, forestry, and environmental monitoring.

INTRODUCTION
 Definition: NDVI is a quantitative measure of vegetation health
based on its spectral reflectance properties.
 Principle: Healthy vegetation absorbs more visible light (especially
red) and reflects more near-infrared (NIR) light.
 Calculation: NDVI = (NIR - Red) / (NIR + Red)
 Interpretation:
• Values range from -1 to 1.
• Higher values indicate healthier vegetation.
• Negative values typically represent water bodies or bare soil.

Applications of NDVI in
Agriculture
•Crop Health Monitoring:
•Early detection of stress (drought, pests, diseases)
•Identification of nutrient deficiencies
•Tracking seasonal growth and development
•Precision Agriculture:
•Variable rate application of inputs (fertilizers, pesticides)
•Optimized irrigation scheduling
•Drought Monitoring:
•Identifying drought-affected areas
•Assessing crop water stress

CONCLUSION
 While it has some limitations, such as sensitivity to atmospheric conditions
and difficulty distinguishing between vegetation types, advancements in
sensor technology and real-time data collection are expanding its usefulness.
NDVI will continue to play a vital role in precision agriculture and
environmental monitoring, becoming more accurate, accessible, and widely
used in the future.
