About the
Learner
Guide…
• This Learner Guide provides a comprehensive
overview of the Facilitate learning using a variety
of given methodologies, and forms part of a
series of Learner Guides that have been
developed for The series of Learner Guides are
conceptualized in modular’s format and
developed for They are designed to improve the
skills and knowledge of learners, and thus
enabling them to effectively and efficiently
complete specific tasks.

• Learners are required to attend training

workshops as a group or as specified by their
organization. These workshops are presented in
modules, and conducted by a qualified facilitator.

What is A
Facilitator ?
Facilitator

• Facilitators support the

development and process of
training programs to help
learners more effectively
retain and apply new skills.
The role involves overseeing
and optimising training
methods within an
organization
Analysis of
learners and
learning needs
Analysis of learners
and learning needs
• The determining of a target learner is merely
a concise way of summarizing the need to
specify, select and appraise the people to be
trained. Although the design of any training
course is strongly influenced by a careful
analysis of the roles, it is obviously
influenced also by the type of person likely
to need such training. The course must be
designed for the people to be trained and it
is most wasteful and inefficient to design a
course without profiling the target group or
learners
A target learner
description helps
the trainer to
make decisions
about the
following
 The appropriate starting point of the course you
are designing.

 The learning experience needed, examples to be

given and materials to be used for that
particular group of trainees.

 What sort of rewards and methods of appeal you

can use with the course participants in order to
motivate them.

 What to avoid in your presentation.

 How to amend your learning outcomes when it

appears that your expectations of the trainees
may have been too high or too low.
Some characteristics
which may be
significant in
designing a training
course are
• Physical characteristics
• Education
• Motivation
• Interests
• Attitudes, biases, prejudices

Lets have a look at

these
Physical characteristics
Physical
characteristics

• The physical nature of the

trainees may influence the tools
and procedures that can be
used in facilitation. Describe the
general nature of your learners;
indicate general handicaps as
well as assets such as special
strengths and endurance
Education.
Education

• The kind of formal and informal

training and education the
trainees have previously received
will significantly influence the
length of the course, type if
examples to be used, acceptable
vocabulary and the abstraction
that can meaningfully be used
Interests
Interests

• What kinds of things are the

trainees interested in? Knowing
their interest, skills or aptitudes
will assist the trainer in
determining course
prerequisites.
Attitudes, biases,
prejudices
Attitudes, biases,
prejudices
• Does your target group consist primarily of
one ethnic group? What are their strong
convictions and biases? This information may
also influence the kind of examples you can
effectively use, and may provide other clues to
trainee motivation.
• The more the facilitator knows about the
target learners, the more accurately will he be
able to define the objectives of the training
and derive the content of the course and the
more accurately he will be able to subtract
what is known from what needs to be known
PLANS CATER FOR THE
NEEDS
PLANS CATER FOR THE NEEDS OF LEARNERS
AND STAKEHOLDERS, POSSIBLE LEARNING
BARRIERS, PREVIOUS LEARNING EXPERIENCES,
LITERACY AND NUMERACY LEVELS, LANGUAGE,
CULTURE, SPECIAL NEEDS AND DIFFERENT
LEARNING STYLES

• The learning plan is the facilitation

prescription, the “blueprint” that
describes the activities the learner
must engage in to reach the
outcomes of the learning
programme. It therefore, describes
how facilities, time, facilitator and
content will be organised to
achieve these outcomes.
Several sources of
information are used
in developing
Learning Plans, they
are
 outcomes of learning programme

 description of programme
prerequisites

• task detailing sheet

 facilities

 time constraints

• Materials
• The essence of Learning
Planning is to develop
facilitation units that are
maximally meaningful to the
student and maximally
effective in the use of time,
space and personnel.
