Negative

Character
Traits
Momina Khan
Reg No: 1715-FSS/BSPSY/F21
Introduction
There are many negative character traits, many of which
a are opposite to the positive character traits. These
neagative traits may include arrogance, showoff,
hypocrisy, oppression, greed, envy and many more.
Arrogance

Opposite of Humility.

Other words are Takabbur (Arabic) and Ghuroor.

Offensive display of superiority or self-

importance; overbearing pride.

“There are three people whom Allah will not
speak to on the day of Resurrection, nor he
will sanctify them, nor look at them and they
will have a griveous penalty. These are an old
man who commits illegal sexual acts, a ruler
who lies and an arrogant poor person”

Recorded by Muslim
“Shall I not inform you about
the inmates of Hell? It is
every violent, impertinent
and proud man"
Bukhari and Muslim
Showing off
(Riya)
Riya means showing off by performing deeds in order to
gain recognition or attention from others.

These maybe considered to be acts of obedience, but

due to their distorted intention, they will not be
accepted by Allah.
Examples of Riya
• To meet people warmly and politely so that people will
consider him a sociable and well-mannered person.

• To wipe tears from eyes, when weeping during Du’a etc. in

the presence of others, so that people will get the impression
that he is wiping tears to avoid Riya (show-off).

• To donate money for religious activities so that people will call

the donor a generous person. To distribute charity to the poor
so that they will gather around him, begging.

It involves a level of hypocrisy and is considered a minor form of
shirk in Islam
“So woe to those ˹hypocrites˺ who pray. yet
are unmindful of their prayers. those who
˹only˺ show off, and refuse to give ˹even the
simplest˺ aid.”

Quran 107: 4-7

The Prophet(P.B.U.H) said, “The thing I fear
the most for you is lesser shirk. The
companion asked, Oh Messenger of
Allah! What is the lesser shirk? He
replied, Showing off.”

Ahmed

Even a martyr will not be given his reward for

good deeds only because he did it for showoff
and not for Allah’s sake.
Signs of Riya

1. Increasing acts of obedience when praised of admired

for them. And decreasing or abandoning them
following criticism or blame. (obeying parents,
respecting teachers and others).

2. Being enthusiastic about performing acts of worship

when in the presence of other people, but being lazy
and forgetful when alone.
Hypocrisy

The Arabic word for hypocrisy is “Nifaaq” which

means showing conformity or agreement with
something while concealing evil inside.
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah
and the Last Day," but they are not believers. They [think to]
deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not
except themselves and perceive [it] not. (Quran 2: 8-9).
Characteristics of hypocrites
1. The main characteristic is that they demonstrate belief
outwardly while hiding their disbelief.

2. They engage in mischief of the earth, such as disobeying

Allah, abandoning what he has made obligatory, and
committing prohibited acts.
3. They also assist the disbelievers against the friends of Allah.
Main mischief is that they confuse the believers by their
outer appearance and then mislead and deceive them.

The main personality traits are lying, breaking promises and

treachery.
Allah's Messenger(‫ )ﷺ‬said, "The signs of a
hypocrite are three: Whenever he
speaks, he tells a lie; and whenever he
promises, he breaks his promise; and
whenever he is entrusted, he betrays
(proves to be dishonest)".

Bukhari and Muslim

Those who have faith may also have some features of
hypocrisy.
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are
four signs that make someone a pure hypocrite and
whoever has them has a characteristic of hypocrisy
until he abandons it: when he speaks he lies, when
he makes a covenant he is treacherous, when he
makes a promise he breaks it, and when he argues
he is wicked.”
Bukhari and Muslim
The believers always try to purify
themselves from any form of hypocrisy
