General Layout of Feed Mill

The document outlines the general layout and components of a feed mill, which produces feed for various domestic animals, poultry, and fish. It details the lab tests conducted in a feed mill, including procedures for protein, moisture, ash, fat, and aflatoxin testing. General layout of feed mill

Feed is produced for a number of domestic animals , poultry and fish.

A feed mill is composed of many machines such as :
1) Storage bin
2) Mixer
3) Hammer mill
4) Extruder
5) Dryer
6) Coater
7) Cooler
8) Screener
9) Bag machine
Lab tests done in a feed mill :
 protein test:
• Add 5g of catalyst(copper + sodium sulphate) + 2g of sample in a 250ml flask
• Add 30ml H2so4(commercial grade) in the flask and mix it up
• Put the flask on a heater for 3 hours (1000-1500 watt heater)
• Cool the sample down and after cooling add distilled water until the solution becomes 250 ml
 Start the kjeldal method :
• Take 10 ml boric acid solution in a beaker and put it under the kjeldal
• Add 10 ml sample solution into the kjeldal flask
• Add 5ml of soda solution into the kjeldal flask. Put the stoper in and add distilled water on the top
• Let it drip into the flask containing boric acid drop by drop until the colour changes and the total volume
becomes 40 ml
• Then add n/50 H2so4 into a burette on a stand
• Put the beaker under the burette (note the reading) and then add the solution drop by drop while
shaking/mixing the beaker until the colour of the solution changes into the colour of boric acid solution
(pink)
 Moisture test :
• weigh the empty crucible dish on the weighing balance and note it down
• Take 10 g sample and note the weight
• Put it in the oven ( temp 105C) for 16 hours
• The sample can be kept in the oven for 2 hrs if the temperature is kept at 135C
• Cool the sample and then again weigh it
 Ash test :
• Note the weight of the conical beaker
• Add 3- 4g of sample in the dish and note the weight
• Heat the dishes/beakers on the heater(1000-1500 watt) for 20 mins
• Put the dishes into the furnace (when the temperature reaches 600C then note the time from then) heat it
for 3.5 hrs
• Leave it to cool down and the weigh it
 Fat test :
• Take a filter paper and measure its weight
• Take 10g sample (can also be taken as per need )
• Fold the filter paper containing the sample properly and out it into the flask of the water bath
• Add petroleum ether in the same flak
• turn on the water bath (temp 90C) for 3 hrs
• Measure weight of a 40ml beaker and note it down
• Add the fat extracted (yellow coloured liquid from the bottom beaker) into the weighed 40ml beaker
 Aflatoxin test :
• Grind the sample (put in a beaker)
• Add 50ml (70% methanol solution ) in the beaker containing grinded the feed sample
• Mix the beaker for 3 mins
• Break two mixing (one red and one white)
• Add 100 micro litre conjugate to the red marked mixing well
• Then add 100 micro litre sample into the red mixing well
• Mix it well and transfer it to antibody well and then incubate it for 3 mins
• Dump liquid from antibody wells
• Wash the wells thoroughly 5 times with distilled water
• Tap out water on absorbent paper towel
• Transfer 100 micro litre substrate from reagent boat to antibody well wells using a micro pipett. Incubate it for 3 mins
• Read results using a microwell reader with a 650 nm filter
