04 Factor Affecting Process

The document outlines key factors affecting the manufacturing process, including volume of production, type of component, expected quality standards, and technical viability. It emphasizes the importance of cost-effectiveness, rate of production, limitations of shape and size, surface finish requirements, and functional needs of components in selecting appropriate manufacturing methods. Each factor plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency and suitability of the manufacturing process for specific products.

Factors Affecting

Manufacturing Process
• 1 Volume of production
For more volume of production, we need more machines and that machines should be
capable of producing more volume of components or products.Hence, for the production
of more volume of components, the machines or the manufacturing process should be
selected in such a way that it can produce more components in a given time period.
• 2 Type of component
• Various types of components are produced in the industries.
• Some finished products require more strength or some require less strength.
• Also some components have less density and some have more density.
• For example aluminum has less density while iron, steel, etc have more density.
• So based on the different properties as well as type of the component, the
manufacturing process is selected.
3 Expected quality standards
• In the manufacturing process, there are few quality standards set for
the particular product.
• For example, few products require very high strength (like forged
steel) while some require less strength (like cast iron).
• So for these types of required qualities, the manufacturing process is
selected accordingly.
4 Properties of component
• Various manufactured products require different properties for their
specific applications.
• For example, stainless steel used for utensils has different properties
as compared to iron used in blacksmithy.
• Hence, according to the required properties of the products, the
manufacturing process is selected.
5 Technical viability of the process
• As discussed above, for the manufacturing of different components,
the different processes are used.
• For all such processes, the technical capability should be fulfilled.
6 Economy
• The cost of the products is the most important factor while selecting
the manufacturing process.
• The manufacturing process that gives the good desired quality of
product with least cost is selected.
7 Rate of production
• Machines and automation techniques in industries produce more
products as compared to humans.
• There are various production processes which can give more quantity
of production as compared to other processes.
• Such manufacturing process should be selected for that product.
8 Limitations of shape and size
• The size and shape of the workpiece are also a factor for the selection
of manufacturing process.
• For example, sometimes there can be a need of machining a large
workpiece or sometimes it’s a machining of a small workpiece.
• 9 Surface finish and tolerance requirement
• Many products need a good finishing according to their specific
applications.
• For achieving a good surface finish on the components, there should be
proper machining operations required to be done on that component.
• Based on such finishing and tolerance the machining process is selected.
10 Functional requirement of the component
• Various components are used in different working environments.
• For example, the engine cylinder, crank shaft, etc of the vehicle engine
works in the high temperature environment.
• While the alloy wheels of the vehicle do not face such high temperatures.
• So based on such functional requirements, the manufacturing process is
selected which can give proper strength and durability to the final
product.
