Manufacturing of Cellulose Fiber Sheet Using Natural Waste: Kongu Engineering College

The project focuses on manufacturing cellulose fiber sheets using fruit and vegetable waste as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper production, which contributes to deforestation. The methodology involves processing organic waste into pulp and enhancing it with natural additives, resulting in high-quality paper without harmful chemicals. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also utilizes readily available waste materials, making it cost-effective.

Introduction
 Paper is essential material used across various fields
Medical, Educational, Industrial sector, paper plays a
crucial role in writing , packaging and documentation
sector. Traditionally of paper made from trees.

 To bridge this gap to turn waste into opportunity. By

utilizing fruit and vegetable waste for paper-making

 Total waste generated: Approximately 1.3 billion

tons ,fruit and vegetable waste is generated
annually.Waste used for fertilizer,(100-200) million tons
of fruit and vegetable waste being used.Waste not used
for fertilizer,(400-550) million tons of fruit and vegetable
waste not being used.

 Problems caused by unused Fruit and Vegetable

hazards,economic loss

Motivation

 Transforming fruit and vegetable waste into eco-friendly paper

offers a sustainable alternative to traditional paper production.

 Annual Paper Production: Approximately 400 million tons

• Tree Consumption, 24 trees are needed to
produce 1 ton of paper
• 9.6 billion trees cut down yearly for paper
production.
 Environmental impacts of tree based paper
production,Deforestation(10 million hectares),Carbon
emissions,Water consumption(10,000-20,000 liters of
water),Chemical pollution,Wastewater generation.

 Loss of Carbon Sinks: Forests absorb about 2.6 billion tons

of CO₂ annually. Deforestation for paper production reduces
this capacity, exacerbating climate change.

4
Problem Statement
The excessive cutting of trees for paper production leads to deforestation and environmental damage.
At the same time, millions of tonnes of fruit and vegetable waste go unused.Transforming fruit and
vegetable waste into eco-friendly paper offers a sustainable alternative to traditional paper production

Objectives

 To explore the overall concept of converting fruit and vegetable waste into paper without using
chemicals, while enhancing its properties with natural additives like starch, clay, and wax.

5
Methodology
Collection of organic waste
Cellulose content 1. Raw Material & Pulping: Vegetable and fruit
• Vegetables and fruits waste (20-35)% waste, containing 20-35% cellulose, is
• Egg shells processed into a pulp, forming the base for
• Sugarcane bagasse Add 10-15% Clay paper production.
• Banana peels content (filler)
• Potato waste
Add 5-10% starch 2. Natural Additives: A 20% clay content
solution solution is used, along with 5-10% starch, 10-
Pulping 15% additional clay solution, 10-15%
Add 5% wax solution whitening agent (calcium carbonate), and 5%
wax to enhance quality.
Add 10-15% whitening
agent(calcium carbonate)
3. Eco-Friendly Paper Formation: Without using
any chemicals, the mixture is processed into
Paper formation (no
durable, high-quality paper suitable for
chemical)
painting and drawing.

6
Traditional Method

• Traditional vs. Alternative Paper Sources: Conventional

paper is primarily made from wood and is used for writing,
printing, drawing, and packaging.

• However, paper made from sugarcane, grass, and other

plant-based sources is mainly used for cardboard sheeting, Paper made from trees Paper made from sugarcane bagasse
paper plate, and paper cup , kraft paper

• Our Sustainable Paper-Making Approach: Our goal is to

produce high-quality writing, printing, and drawing paper.

• Using fruit and vegetable waste, ensuring an eco-friendly

alternative that reduces deforestation while maintaining the
usability of traditional paper.

Physical Requirements

✅ Eco-Friendly Paper is Better :

Higher durability (GSM, tensile strength, bursting strength).
Sustainable & chemical-free (reduces deforestation and pollution).
Better ink absorption (good for artistic use and eco-friendly printing).

Conclusion
Eco-Friendly & Sustainable :
 Reduces deforestation by using vegetable and fruit
waste
 No harmful chemicals
 Better Paper Quality & Performance Contains natural
starch and cellulose, improving strength, GSM, and
Wax Solution from Sugarcane Bagasse→ Drying & Grinding→ Boiling in Water (80-90°C)→ Skimming & Filtration→ Output: Wax
durability. Solution (Water Resistance)
 The addition of banana peel ash (as filler) and
eggshell-derived calcium carbonate (as a whitening
agent) enhances smoothness and print ability. Wax
from sugarcane bagasse provides water resistance.
 Economic & Cost-Effective Utilizes readily available
waste materials, reducing material costs. Requires
less energy-intensive processing, leading to lower
production
