Tesla Coil
Tesla Coil,a type of Transformer
A transformer is a device that can either increase or reduce voltage. They work by
magnetically coupling 2 coils together. These coils are referred to as the primary
coil and the secondary coil. Simply put, when 2 coils are close together, they can
transfer energy between them. In a typical transformer, the ratio of turns determines
the output voltage Not so for the Tesla coil. The secondary coil has resonant properties. Because of
this, it achieves much higher voltages. The main property of a coil is inductance. The large
surface area of the secondary coil has capacitance as well. When a circuit has both inductance and
capacitance, it is said to be resonant.

Fig-Transformer
How Tesla Coil Works?
Tesla coil has two main parts – a primary coil and a secondary coil,
with each coil having its own capacitor. A spark gap connects the
coils and capacitors. The functionality of the spark gap is to generate
the spark to excite the system
This coil uses a specialized transformer called a resonant
transformer, a radio-frequency transformer, or an oscillation
transformer.
The primary coil is connected to the power source and the
secondary coil of a transformer is coupled loosely to ensure that it
resonates. The capacitor connected in parallel with the transformer
circuit acts as a tuning circuit or an LC circuit to generate signals at
a specific frequency.
The primary of the transformer, otherwise referred to as a resonant
transformer steps up to generate very high levels of voltage ranging
between 2kv to 30 kV, which in turn charges the capacitor. With the
accumulation of massive amounts of charge in the capacitor,
eventually, breaks down the air of the spark gap. The capacitor
emits a huge amount of current through the Tesla Coil (L1, L2),
which in turn generates a high voltage at the output.
Basic Principle of Tesla Coil working
The principles behind the Tesla coil are relatively simple. Just keep in mind that electrical
current is the flow of electrons, while the difference in electric potential (voltage) between
two places is what pushes that current. Current is like water, and voltage is like a hill. A
large voltage is a steep hill, down which a stream of electrons can rapidly flow. A small
voltage is like a near-flat plain with almost no water flow.

Resonance
A resonant circuit stores energy. You can
think of it as pushing someone on a swing
set. By matching their rate, you are putting
energy into their forward momentum
With each push, they swing higher and
higher. The same can be said about how a
Tesla coil works. With each push at the
coil’s frequency, the voltage becomes
higher.
Fig-LC circuit

Electromagnetic Induction
The power of the Tesla coil lies in a process
called electromagnetic induction. This is
where a changing magnetic field creates a
voltage that compels current to flow. In
turn, the flowing electric current generates a
magnetic field.

Parts of Tesla Coil
1. Input Transformer: * Purpose: This transformer steps up the incoming
household voltage (typically 120V) to a higher voltage, usually several
hundred volts. This higher voltage is necessary to drive the Tesla coil's
operation.
2. Capacitor:
* Purpose: The capacitor stores the stepped-up voltage from the transformer.
It gradually accumulates electrical charge until it reaches its capacity.
3. Primary Coil:
* Purpose: This coil is made of thick copper wire and is typically wound in a
horizontal configuration. It receives the high-frequency, high-voltage current
from the capacitor.
* Function: The primary coil acts as the primary winding of a transformer.
When the capacitor discharges, it induces a current in the secondary coil.
4. Secondary Coil:
* Purpose: This coil is wound with fine wire and has many more turns than the
primary coil. This configuration allows it to step up the voltage significantly.
* Function: The secondary coil acts as the secondary winding of the transformer. It
receives the induced current from the primary coil and, due to the difference in the
number of turns, boosts the voltage to thousands of volts.
5. Metallic Terminal:
* Purpose: This is a large, donut-shaped metal terminal connected to one end of the
secondary coil. The high-frequency, high-voltage current from the secondary coil
builds up an electrical charge in this terminal.
* Function: When another metal object is brought close to the terminal, the
accumulated charge creates a spark that jumps between the two objects.

involving use of tesla coil

Fig-4 Magnifying Transmitter

Magnifying Transmitter Concept: The image depicts a proposed magnifying

transmitter concept involving Tesla coils. This concept, envisioned by Nikola Tesla,
aimed to transmit electrical energy wirelessly over long distances
Key Components: * Top of the Tower (Capacitor): This represents a large capacitor,
which Tesla envisioned as a spherical conductor at the top of a tower. This capacitor
would store electrical energy.
* Primary Coil: A large primary coil would be wound around the base of the tower.
This coil would receive energy from the power source and convert it into high-
frequency alternating current.
• Secondary Coil: A smaller secondary coil would be placed above the primary coil.
This coil would be tuned to resonate at the same frequency as the primary coil,
allowing for efficient energy transfer.
* Ground Connection: The system would be grounded to facilitate the flow of
electrical current
How it Would Work (Theoretically): * The power source would supply energy to
the primary coil.
* The primary coil would generate a high-frequency alternating current.
• This current would induce a corresponding current in the secondary coil
through electromagnetic induction.
• * The secondary coil, being tuned to resonate with the primary coil, would
amplify the received energy.
• * This amplified energy would be transmitted wirelessly through the air.
• * At the receiving end, a similar setup with a primary and secondary coil
would capture the transmitted energy
Tesla's Vision and Limitations:While Tesla's vision of wireless power
transmission was ambitious, practical challenges hindered its implementation.
Some limitations included:
Energy Loss: Significant energy loss occurs during wireless transmission,
making it inefficient for large-scale power distribution.
* Technical Complexity: The technology required to build and operate such a
system was beyond the capabilities of the time.
• Environmental Impact: The potential environmental impact of such a system
was not fully understood.
In conclusion, while Tesla's magnifying transmitter concept remains a
fascinating historical idea, its practical limitations have prevented its
widespread implementation

Fig-6Spark gap tesla coil

Spark Gap tesla Coil
A spark gap in a Tesla coil is two electrodes positioned close to each other.
You can think of it as a switch. A transformer is used to charge a capacitor
to a high voltage. Eventually, the voltage becomes so high that an arc
forms in the gap. This allows current to flow into the primary circuit. As
the energy transfer is
complete, the arc extinguishes and the process repeats.

Fig-SGTC circuit

Solid State Tesla Coils

A solid state Tesla coil replaces the spark
gap with modern technology. Transistors
MOSFETs, IGBTs, are all examples of
modern switches. These machines are
typically much more efficient and reliable
than their predecessors. Not to mention,
their capabilities are vast.
The solid state machines are capable of
many things. Because of their ability to
use microcontrollers, a wide variety of spark
effects are possible.
Single Resonant Coils
This is the most basic type of coil. It is often just called an SSTC. The term
“single resonant”, refers to the resonance of the secondary. A solid state driver is
usually coupled to the primary with a capacitor. The chosen capacitor value is
meant to avoid primary resonance. This is how a Tesla coil works using the
most basic techniques.

Fig-SRC circuit

Dual resonance solid state tesla

coil(DRSSTC)
A dual resonant coil is most often called a
DRSSTC. These machines use a half or
full bridge to drive a series tuned primary
circuit. These are the most powerful
variety. The tuned primary circuit makes it
possible to put much more energy in.
DRSSTCs are the foundation for more
complex varieties, such as QCW Tesla
coils.

Fig-DRSSTC circuit
Modes of Tesla Coil
There are two modes of Tesla Coil they are as follows:
1)Continuous Wave Mode(CWM)-CW mode, as the name suggests operates at
100% duty cycle. If you look at the waveform on a scope, it just looks like an
infinite sin wave. This mode makes a mostly silent and bushy spark. This is also
the mode used to make high-quality audio sounds. They accomplish this by using
various forms of modulation

Fig-CWM

2)Interrupted Mode(IM)-In interrupted mode, the high-frequency signal operates in

short bursts. By shortening these bursts, higher primary currents are achieved.
Because of this, we can produce very long sparks with less input power
