WATER CONSERVATION

WATER CONSERVATION
RAINWATER HARVESTING
WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
IMPORTANCE OF WATER:
 WATER IS A VITAL COMPONENT OF LIFE ON EARTH AND IS
ESSENTIAL FOR THE SURVIVAL OF ALL LIVING THINGS.
 WATER MAKES UP ABOUT 60% OF A HUMAN'S BODY WEIGHT
AND IS ESSENTIAL FOR MANY BODILY FUNCTIONS.
 LESS THAN 1% OF THE EARTH'S WATER IS AVAILABLE FOR
HUMAN USE. WHILE EARTH HAS A LOT OF WATER, 99.7% OF IT
IS IN THE OCEANS, ATMOSPHERE, ICE CAPS, AND SOILS.
 WATER IS USED IN OUR DAILY LIFE FOR CLEANING, DRINKING,
WASHING CLOTHES, AND GROWING FOOD.
 TO CONSERVE WATER, WE CAN PRESERVE AND UTILIZE
RAINWATER, AND BE MINDFUL OF OUR WATER USAGE.
What is water conservation?
The process of saving water for future utilization
is called WATER CONSERVATION.
Rain is the principle source of fresh water.
The other sources of water are
lakes,rivers,oceans and streams.
Water conservation refers to any beneficial
reduction of water usage, loss or waste.
Conservation of water mainly refers
to PROTECT, PRESERVE, AND CONTROL THE
USAGE OF WATER AND ITS RESOURCES.
TECHNIQUES TO CONSERVE WATER
 There many ways to conserve water like grey water
systems, efficient irrigation , water storage and recycling and
rainwater harvesting. Now let us talk about rainwater
harvesting and a managing technique watershed
management.
 Rainwater harvesting and watershed management are water
conservation techniques that can help improve water quality
and availability.
 Rainwater harvesting collects and stores rain for later use,
while watershed management involves managing land and
water resources within a watershed.
RAINWATER HARVESTING
Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting and storing
rainwater for future use. It’s a simple eco-friendly and cost-
effective way to conserve water.
Basic components:
 Catchment area(roof or surface)
 Gutters and downspouts
 Storage tank(above or below ground)
 Treatment and filtration systems(optional)
 Distribution system (pipes and pumps)
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Conserves water  Space requirements
 Decreases the bills  Unreliable rainfall
 Reduces stormwater  Maintainence
runoff and erosion.  Mosquito breeding
 Reduces flooding in  Sedimentation
low-lying areas.
 Can be used for irrigation,
toilet flushing and washing-

machines.
 Decreases demand on
municipal water supplies.
WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
 Watershed management is the process of studying
and managing a watershed's land use and water to
improve the quality of water and natural resources,
and to reduce the negative effects of flooding,
drought, and water pollution.
 A watershed is an area of land that drains into a
river, lake, or aquifer.
 Watershed management involves implementing land
use and water management practices to care for
natural resources in a way that supports human
needs for water, food, fiber, energy, and habitation.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Improved water  Watershed building
quality involves huge costs
 Groundwater recharge  require regular
 Reduced flooding and maintenance
droughts  Depends on rainfall of
 It helps to increase the area
production of crops.  Sometimes it leads to
 prevent land deforestation and loss
degradation of bio-diversity
CONCLUSION
 Water conservation is not a choice but
a necessity.
 The implementation of rainwater
harvesting systems in [community] is
an important step towards reducing
the dependence on groundwater and
other sources of water.
 Watershed management is a critical
approach to address water-related
challenges, conserving natural
resources, and promoting sustainable
development in india.
