Well testing in hydraulically fractured wells analyzes pressure transients to evaluate reservoir and fracture properties, aiding in well performance and future development planning. Key tests include minifrac tests for pre-fracture analysis and pressure buildup and drawdown tests post-fracture to understand flow regimes. Different flow regimes such as bilinear, linear, pseudo-radial, and radial flow are identified based on pressure transient behaviors.

• Well testing, particularly in hydraulically fractured wells,

involves analyzing pressure transients to understand

reservoir and fracture properties. This helps in
evaluating well and field performance, diagnosing
reservoir characteristics, and planning future
development. Key tests include minifrac tests, which
assess fracture characteristics before full fracturing, and
various pressure buildup and drawdown tests to
understand flow regimes and fracture behavior.
Pre-Fracture

• Purpose: Conducted before full hydraulic fracturing to determine fracture characteristics, including fracture
gradient, fluid leak-off behavior, formation permeability, and fracture closure pressure.

• Method: Involves injecting a small volume of fluid into the well to induce a fracture and measure pressure changes.

• Information Gained: Helps optimize the design of the subsequent full fracturing operation.
Pressure Buildup and Drawdown Tests (Post-Fracture):

Purpose:
• Analyze the pressure response of the well when
it's shut-in or produced.
Method:
• Engines allow a limited amount of fluid to flow
from or into a formation, then close
factor: Reflected in the later-time radial flow
regime.
Fracture closure pressure: Determined by
analyzing leak-off behavior,
similar to a Diagnostic Fracture Initiation Test
(DFIT
Flow Regimes:

• Different pressure transient behaviors are observed,

including:
Bilinear Flow: Characteristic of flow within the fracture, where
the pressure derivative versus time plot exhibits a 1/4 slope.
Linear Flow: Flow within the fracture when the fracture
conductivity is low.
Pseudo-radial Flow: Flow around the wellbore, affected by the
fracture.
Radial Flow: Flow from the reservoir to the wellbore,
characteristic of later-time behavior
