Topic 12A TEST CONSTRUCTION by Gregory

The document outlines the six stages of test construction: defining the test, selecting a scaling method, constructing items, testing items, revising the test, and publishing the test. It emphasizes the importance of clear objectives, appropriate scaling methods, and thorough item analysis throughout the process. The document also discusses various scales of measurement, including nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio scales, and provides guidance on item formulation and pilot testing.

TEST CONSTRUCTION

By: Gregory
TEST CONSTRUCTION
•Important things to consider:
•● a test developer must choose
strategies and materials
•Make day-to-day research
decisions that will affect the
quality of his/her emerging
instrument
TEST CONSTRUCTION
•SIX STAGES:
•Defining a test
•Selecting a scaling method
•Constructing the items
•Testing the items
•Revising the test
•Publishing the test
• **************************************
•1. defining the test
•→consists of delimiting its scope
and purpose, which must be
known before the developer can
proceed to test construction.
Things to consider in defining
the Test:
• a. The developer must have a clear idea of
what the test is to measure and how it is to
differ from existing instruments

•b. Yield scores

•c. Include novel tasks

•d. Be easy to administer and objective to score

•2. Selecting a Scaling Method
•is a process of setting the rules by which
numbers are assigned to test results.
• SCALES OF MEASUREMENT
•NOMINAL
•A nominal level of measurement is simply
a matter of distinguishing(identifying)
profile/choices…
e.g., 1 = male, 2 = female.
•ORDINAL
•Constitute a form of ordering or ranking.
•Examples: Test results Interpretation:
•---Low/Average/High;
•--Above Average/Average/Low Average
•Always/Often/Sometimes/Rare/Never
•Many psychological scales
or inventories are at the
ordinal level of
measurement.
•INTERVAL SCALE
• The interval scale is a term taken from statistics that is
one of various methods of classifying variables.
• It allows for quantifying the degree of difference
between items.
• An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) score from a
standardized test of intelligences is a good
example of an interval scale score. ...
• OLSAT: If one student receives an IQ score of 90
and another student receives and IQ score of
110 we can count on the units having the same
meaning in order to make our interpretation.
PERCENTILE RANK STANINE CLASSIFICATION

128 Above 9 Superior

112 - 127 7- 8 Above Average

88 - 111 4-6 Average

72 - 87 3-2 Below Average

71 below 1 Low Average

Ratio Scale
•A ratio scale is the most informative scale as it
tends to tell about the order and number of the
object between the values of the scale.
• The most common examples of ratio scale are
height, money, age, weight etc.
• ***Test scores on course examinations are often
recorded as percent correct.
• Such scores are at the ratio level of
measurement because there is an absolute zero
value (0% correct) and differences between
values can be compared meaningfully.
• 3. CONSTRUCTING THE ITEMS
• Formulating the questions
• It is the painful and laborious procedure that taxes the
creativity of test developers.
• Questions to ask:
• Should item content be homogenous or heterogenous?
Mental Well-being among the Participants
∑scores Interpretation
Mental Well – Being 52.100 Average
Mean Rank
Subscales
Observing 3.34 1
Describing 3.00 3
Acting with Awareness 2.96 4
Nonjudging of inner experience 2.71 5
Nonreactivity to inner experience 3.07 2
Total Mindfulness 3.02 Average
•What range of difficulty should the
items cover?
•How many initial items should be
constructed?
•Which cognitive processes and item
domains should be tapped?
•What format of the test item should
be used?
• 4.TESTING THE ITEMS
•Pilot testing by using item
analysis in order to identify
best items and determine
which items should be retained,
revise and thrown out.
•5. REVISING THE ITEM
•Collection of new data
•If revisions are substantial,
new items and additional
pretesting is required

6. PUBLISHING THE TEST
•Final step in test
construction
•The developer before
publishing and releasing
the test should provide a
user-friendly manual.
