The rate of a chemical reaction refers to how quickly it occurs and is influenced by factors such as temperature, pressure, surface area, concentration, and catalysts. According to collision theory, reactions happen faster with more frequent and energetic particle collisions. An increase in any of the influencing factors will enhance the reaction rate, while a decrease will slow it down.

Rate of reaction

The rate of a chemical reaction is the speed at which it takes

place.

The rate can be affected by certain factors, including:

• temperature
• pressure (in a gas)
• surface area
• concentration
• catalysts

The steeper the gradient on the

graph, the faster the rate of reaction

Rate of reaction

Collision theory
• The rate of a chemical reaction increases when the particles in
the reaction collide more frequently.

• For a successful reaction to take place, the collision must

involve enough energy. So the more high-energy collisions
taking place, the faster the rate of reaction is.

• The rate of reaction will increase if there is an increase in

temperature, pressure (in a gas), concentration or surface
area. Also, adding a catalyst will increase the rate too.

• The rate of reaction will decrease if there is a decrease in

temperature, pressure (in a gas), concentration or surface
area.
