Introduction
• In recent years, the emphasis on road safety for cyclists has grown significantly
due to the increasing number of accidents involving bicycles. Traditional hand
signals used by cyclists to indicate turns and stops often go unnoticed, especially
during night-time or in poor visibility conditions.
• To address this issue, this project proposes a gesture-controlled bicycle indicator
system that enhances visibility and communication between cyclists and other
road users.
• The system is centered around a glove-mounted Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
that detects hand tilts to signal left and right turns. Additionally, a flex sensor is
integrated to detect when the hand forms a fist, thereby activating the brake light.
The system enables cyclists to signal their intentions without taking their hands
off the handlebars or relying on external switches, thus improving safety.

2
Concept System Workflow
• The core idea behind the system is to
interpret natural hand gestures into
electronic signals using sensor data.
• An IMU sensor mounted on a glove
detects the tilt of the rider’s hand to
determine left or right turn gestures.
• Simultaneously, a flex sensor monitors
finger bending to identify a closed fist
gesture, indicating braking.
• These sensor readings are processed by
an ESP32, which then wirelessly
transmits the corresponding command
to a receiver unit mounted on the
bicycle.
• The receiver activates the appropriate
indicator or brake light based on the
command received, ensuring intuitive
and seamless control for the rider.

Simulating IMU tilt and flex sensor readings

Components Required
Sensors –
• Accelerometer – Detects hand tilt for left/right turns
• Flex sensor – Detects finger bending for braking

Other components –
• 2 STM32F401CC (Blackpill)
• Flex sensor
• IMU (MPU6050)
• Power supply

7
Results
• Through this project, we have gained knowledge on integration of
the MPU6050(IMU) and flex sensor with 2 ESP32s – a transmitter and
a receiver which communicate with each other using the ESP-NOW
communication protocol.
• Depending on the IMU tilt and flex sensor readings, we make 3 LEDs
glow – namely the left indicator, right indicator and the brake light.

Conclusion
Through this project, we have successfully integrated an IMU and a
flex sensor with an ESP32-based wireless communication system to
develop an efficient and intuitive bicycle signaling solution. The
glove-mounted interface allows riders to signal turns and braking
naturally, without requiring additional effort or distraction. This
project showcases how wearable technology and embedded systems
can be seamlessly combined to solve real-world challenges in
personal transportation, ultimately promoting safer and smarter
cycling.

Individual contribution
• Monish Murugan (EC23I1009) – Integrated IMU with the ESP and
calibrated values accordingly.

• Harini Mandalam (EC23I2012) – Integrated flex sensor with the ESP

and used receiver ESP data to glow indicators accordingly.

• Shriya Yadalam (EC23I1008) – Established communication between

both ESPs using ESP-NOW, set up LabView simulation.
