Preventive maintenance involves regular inspection and cleaning to prevent hardware and software failures, reducing repair costs and extending device life. It includes both hardware maintenance, such as cleaning components and checking cables, and software maintenance, like updating security and software. Data protection is crucial during maintenance, requiring backups and precautions to avoid data loss.

Preventive maintenance
• Is the regular and systematic inspection, cleaning, and replacement of
worn parts, materials, and systems. • It is done to prevent failure of parts, materials, and systems by regularly checking whether all parts are in good working orders. - By conducting this we reduce the probability of hardware or software problems by checking to ensure the proper operation. - Ensures minimal system failure. - Upgrading certain hardware and software such as hard drive that is making noise, upgrading insufficient memory, and installing new software updates for security and reliability. Conducting Maintenance • First and foremost, maintenance is important in reducing hardware and software issues. With this, computer downtown and repair costs are reduced. • Preventive maintenance depend on the needs and specifications of the equipment. ex. Service expose to a dusty environment such as a construction site would need more maintenance as compare to an office environment. Reasons why maintenance should be conducted: 1. Increase data protection 2. Extended device life 3. Increased equipment stability 4. Reduced repair costs 5. Reduced equipment failure. Hardware Maintenance Maintenance for computer hardware can be done by regularly checking cables, components, and peripherals. Regularly cleaning of components should also be done to reduce overheating. Replacement of damage components due to excessive wear should also be conducted. Guide in conducting hardware maintenance 1. Remove dust from fans 2. Remove dust from power supply 3. Remove dust from components inside the computer 4. Clean the mouse and the cable 5. Check cables. SOFWARE MAINTENACE It can be done by making it sure that updates are current. Follow policies when installing programs, operating systems, and security updates. Testing is done to ensure that minimal problems will be encountered when updating the software and hardware. Simple task when conducting software maintenance: 1. Review and check security updates. 2. Review and check software updates. 3. Review and check drivers updates. 4. Update anti-virus files. 5. Scan for virus and malware 6. Remove unused and unwanted programs 7. Scan hard drive 8. Defragment hard drives. Data protection • Before troubleshooting, follow the necessary precautions in order to handle computer hardware and software properly. • Repairs such as hard drive replacement and operating system installation are very delicate and may out computer data at risk. • Be sure to prevent data loss when attempting repairs. Practicing Caution Data Protection - Is one of the first steps of troubleshooting Computer must be first be protected before starting any work on a client or customer’s computer. A technician can be blames or held liable if data loss occurs because of improper data handling. Backing up Data Backup is the copy of data on a computer or hard drive that is saved to an external media such as DVD, CD, or flash drive. In an organization, back-ups are routinely done-may it be daily, weekly, or a monthly basis. To ensure that organization’s data are protected and are readily available. If unsure whether a backup has been done, do not conduct troubleshooting activities on a client’s computer. Make sure to verify the following with the customer first: 1. Data of last back up 2. Content of backup 3. Data integrity of the backup –Data integrity is the maintenance of the occuracy and consistency of the data. It is making sure that the data can be properly retrieved or restored in its optimum quality. 4. Availability of back up media for data protection Routine Maintenance 1. Clean Browsers Ccleaner – Third party, freeware programs to do clean up for you. 2. Search and delete spyware and viruses from the service. Ex. AVG Antivirus – third party software’s can be use for maintenance. Or use for Windows Security built in on Windows 10 devices. 3. Defragment the hardware drive routinely to keep the device running smoothly. 4. Uninstall programs that are no longer used. Delete files that are no longer needed. The freer space a computer has, the faster it will perform. The computer’s performance will increase. 5. Remove start up programs. Use the MSCONFIG command in the RUN command prompt to open up a windows that will allow you to uncheck. - Doing this will improve start up and boot down times a lot. CCLEANER can be used for this purpose. 6. Use your computer’s disk management systems. Use your computer’s disk management systems. • For windows, select Performance and maintenace. Choose “Rearrange items on your hard disk,,”and “Free up space on your hard disk.” or simply run Disk Cleanup. Tips on Maintaining Hardware 1. Always run your computer on an interruptible power supply(UPS). UPS- It is an electrical apparatus that gives emergency power when a computer’s main power fails. This will help protect the device from electric surges. Phone lines for modems and cat 5 and cat 6 network lines also needs surge suppression(prevention/pagpigil as they can and will take put your network card or modem in an electric storm(thunder and lightning). 2. Open up your computer. -Dust accumulate in your computer in less than a year, depending on how dusty your house. Check every few months. Make sure to follow computer assembly and disassembly. 3. Be careful when plugging peripherals to the computer. Ports can be easily damaged when mishandled. These repairs can be quite be costly.
