production, sales and profits.

2. Management is Goal-Oriented
It seeks to achieve goals. These goals may be economic or
non-economic. In a business organization, the primary goal is to
produce and distribute goods and services in order to earn profit.
In a service organization, the goal might be a customer service
like hospitals, education, institutions etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT
3. Management is Universal
It is an all-pervasive activity. The basic principles of
management are applicable in business as well as in other
organizations. These principles, however, need careful
application depending on situational demands.

4. Management is a Social Process

It is a social process because it deals with people first. To
make the best use of human efforts, managers have to create
close cooperation among employees in an organization. They
have to use resources for the benefit of society as a whole. They
have to look after the interest of employees, shareholders,
customers, investors, and community.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT
5. Management is a Group Activity
It is concerned with getting things done through people.
People join groups in order to achieve results collectively.
Management helps people in realizing their individuals as well as
group goals in a coordinated manner.

6. Management is a System of Authority

A manager is supposed to get things done, rather than
doing things himself, by using authority. Authority is the right to
give orders and the power to obtain obedience from
subordinates.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT

It is a distinct activity like playing, teaching, studying etc.
It can be studied, knowledge about it obtained and skills in its
applications are acquired.

8. Management is a Dynamic
It is dynamic and growth-oriented function. It tries to
visualize problems before they turn into emergencies and take
suitable steps. It tries to adapt itself to the environment
changes quickly. It proposes to take actions to make the desired
results to come to pass. According to Ducker, “Managers do not
wait for the future; they make the future.”
CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT
9. Management is a Science as well as an Art
It is a systemized body of knowledge based on certain
principles capable of general application. The principles
underlying time and motion studies, morale, motivation,
leadership can be applied by persons working in various
capacities. Art is the application of knowledge and skills in order
to achieve results. Management is an art because it involves the
use of know-how and skills, just like any other art such as-music,
painting, etc. In recent years, management has developed into
a separate, distinct discipline, receiving vital inputs from
subjects such as psychology, sociology, anthropology,
economics, etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MANAGEMENT

10. Management is Transferable

Management practices in one area can be
transferred to other areas. For example,
operation research that emanated during the
Second World War to manage war logistics now
finds a place in business.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT

1. It is a process
process means a systematic method of doing
some work. Management is recognized as a continuous
process. It is that process in which work is done with
others or it is got done from them. In order to achieve
the pre-determined objective a manager performs the
work of planning, organizing, staffing, leading and
controlling. A manager did these works in a continuous
order. So, it is a process.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT

2. Group Efforts
management always efforts to group efforts and
does not apply to an individual. A group rather than
an individual can easily and effectively attain
management of an enterprise.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT

3. It is a social process
management is called a social activity because
it is connected with the people working in a human
group and which requires organizing their efforts.
Any activity, which is connected with the people
living in society, is called a social activity. In this
context management is also described as a social
activity.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT
4. Attainment of pre-determined objectives
group efforts in management are always directed
towards the achievement of some pre-determined objectives;
without objectives management would be difficult if not
impossible
5. Management has a distinct entity
in view of the widening scope of business it is not
possible for an owner to perform all functions himself. We can
say that specially qualified experts are needed for managing
the company.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT
6. Management is a universal activity
it is clear that management is not only connected with
business but also with non-business activities also, which is
also important. Management is everywhere.
7. Management as a profession
when we have recognized the distinct entity of management,
there should not be any doubt or hesitation to call it a profession.
The quality of a profession is that he must possess some special
qualifications or ability for which he is paid remuneration. The
knowledge of management is also a qualification and managers also
get their remuneration for it. Hence, management is considered a
profession.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT
8. Management is an intangible force
management is a force, which is not visible. It can only
be feeling or realized on the basis of the success of an
organization.
9. Management is a combination of multiple
functions
the basic function of management is to achieve the
objectives of the organization successfully. That is why a manager
has to perform various function like planning, organizing, staffing,
leading and controlling etc. hence management does not mean one
particular job but it happens to be a combination of various jobs.
NATURE OF MANAGEMENT

profession but like other professions management
does not restrict entry into managerial jobs, to
people with a special academic degree.
