Dam Break Analysis
Dam Break Analysis
3/9/2025 2
Problem Identified and Need for
solution
1 .There are 2500+ dams in maharashtra state.
2 .Majority of them have crossed age of 40-50yrs.
3 .If these dams fail due to age and other failure parameters ,big
disaster may occur on the downstream side.
4 .There is a need to investigate these dams by conducting dam break
analysis for adopting the appropriate disaster mitigation measures.

Case Study
1.Nashik is a city in Maharashtra, India, known for its history, culture,
and natural beauty.
2.Nashik is a city in the northern region of the Indian state of Maharashtr
a situated on the banks of the river Godavari.
3.The population of Nashik city is around 2.2 million and is emerging as
one of the fastest-growing cities in India.
4.Nashik city in Maharashtra requires about 550 million liters of water
per day. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) estimates that it
will need 6.3 trillion cubic meters of water over the next year to meet
the city's drinking water needs.

1.It was the first earthen dam in the state of Maharashtra.
2. It was built in 1954 from stones, clay, mud, and sand .
3.The dam provides water supply, river navigation, flood control,
and waste management
4.The height of the dam above lowest foundation is 36.59 m (120.0
ft) while the length is 3,902 m (12,802 ft)
5.This dam at Gangapur with a catchment area of 357.40 sq.km and
submergence area of 2231 ha .
6.Gangapur dam is located between 20.0481° N, 73.6798° E .

Scope of Work
1.Data collection: Gather hydrological, structural, and
topographical data of Gangapur Dam.
2.Software simulation: Model dam break scenarios using HEC-
RAS and analyze flood wave propagation.
3.Downstream impact assessment: Identify flood-prone areas and
infrastructure at risk.
4.Case study investigation: Evaluate Gangapur Dam’s role in
Nashik’s water management.
5.Disaster mitigation planning: Develop flood risk maps and
propose emergency action plans.
6.Risk reduction strategies: Recommend early warning systems,
evacuation plans, and structural reinforcements.
