Uncertainty Avoidance

Uncertainty avoidance deals with a society's tolerance for ambiguity and unstructured situations. Cultures with high uncertainty avoidance (HUA) try to minimize uncertainty through strict rules and laws, while those with low uncertainty avoidance (LUA) can accept lack of certainty. HUA countries want clearly defined goals and processes, value expertise, and prefer formal rules and plans. LUA countries are more tolerant of ambiguity, embrace discussion of gray areas, and can accept self-managed teams and generalist perspectives. Geert Hofstede's dimensions analysis framework can help understand intercultural differences between regions and countries.

Uncertainty avoidance deals with a societys tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity; it ultimately refers to mans search for Truth. It indicates to what extent a culture programs its members to feel either uncomfortable or comfortable in unstructured situations..

Unstructured situations are novel, unknown, surprising, and different from usual. Uncertainty avoiding cultures try to minimize the possibility of such situations by strict laws and rules, safety and security measures, and on the philosophical and religious level by a belief in absolute Truth; there can only be one Truth and we have it.
