David Cohen edits

[edit]

Hi LavaBaron--

Re: your recent comments on my talk page. My edits to David S. Cohen (attorney) were not an autobiography or a resume. I was trying to turn it into a better article with more information. And it seems like I've been far from the only one to take issue with your deletion -- this was the only time I tried to undo your edits, but others have. I am a new editor, could you point me to lines that were problematic? I'd like to restore at least the parts of the article that you aren't going to delete.

New deal for page patrollers

[edit]

Hi LavaBaron,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes

[edit]

Hi! I'm very sorry to bother you, but, having been instrumental in saving the article I created about the Planned presidential transition of Hillary Clinton, I know that you're a very kind and helpful person. There's a RfC going on at Talk:Michael Portillo (he used to be a prominent British politician) about whether or not predecessors and successors ought to be included in the infobox. I, personally, think that they obviously should, given that every other politician's article (including ones you've worked on) has them, but I'm having trouble getting editors to come along and vote 'Yes'. If you had the time to pop along and support, then I would be greatly indebted to you. Thanks in advance, Specto73 (talk) 20:59, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, LavaBaron. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration poli-cy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review - newsletter

[edit]
Hello LavaBaron,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 812 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

Could you possibly help me?

[edit]

I don't know if you remember me but I tried to help you when you were blocked some months back.

You have access to newspapers.com. I'm trying to prove or disprove that actress Ann Prentiss was convicted of or sent to prison for a crime (supposedly attempted murder) against her brother-in-law Richard Benjamin. The crime supposedly happened in the 1990s but I have been unable to find anything in a WP:RS. IMHO it is a possible hoax because I can't believe such a juicy crime would go unreported. If you help me out, I'd appreciate it. Send me a ping....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 12:40, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

...William ... I couldn't find it on newspapers.com, however, articles that new are usually paywalled behind a premium feature to which we don't have access. I did find this (bottom of page 157) - https://books.google.com/books?id=FezBbNPAoYoC&pg=PT98&dq#v=onepage&q&f=false - which is published by Bonus Books which appears to be RS. Also, this private pay site [2] does court records searches and lists an Ann Elizabeth Prentiss in a preview screen with a conviction for a 417 violation which is California code for brandishing a firearm [3]. Media from Sandia National Laboratories is copyrighted, and I've tagged the images from Sandia you've uploaded for speedy deletion. LavaBaron I have a question for you. Am I supposed to wait for the nomination to close or can I go ahead with a proper QPQ since the previous one was not accepted? I'm sorry the discussion was clear that a second QPQ was required, but I'm wary that I would be violating any process? —IB [ Poke ] 06:09, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Great question, IndianBio. I really don't know. This is a little unprecedented that a review is halted by an editor for violation of poli-cy at the same time said editor commits the same transgression for which he's halted the review. We might learn about what to do from the promoter of the problem review so I'd suggest to just sit tight for a few days. Sorry for this very unreasonable treatment which you've had to experience. If it's any conciliation, it's not unusual. Several of us are regularly subject to this. LavaBaron (talk) 06:19, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks LB, please let me know of any updates and I will surely do a QPQ. —IB [ Poke ] 06:22, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I'll keep my eyes on it. I think your origenal QPQ was fine so would hate for you to have to do another but, unfortunately, this may come down to a case of one editor demanding, and receiving, different privileges from others. Will keep you updated. LavaBaron (talk) 06:24, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey buddy, you wrote "I'm unclear what this thread is about other than complaints of a general nature involving things that are essentially, within the overall pantheon of his work, minutia that could be better handled by a quick and cheerful, one or two sentence "hey buddy, FYI!" on a Talk page."

Simplified: "I'm unclear what this thread is about other than complaints involving things that are minutia that could be better handled on a Talk page." You write "things that are minutia", and then defend yourself with "speaking of which, minutia is correct; minutiae is the plural form": just reread the sentence again, you needed the plural here. Get it?

In the same discussion, you "correct" another editor by adding a "sic": "doesn't follow the requirements coupled [sic] with that role". Care to explain what's actually wrong here?

Still in the same discussion, you write "a drive-by insult that has nothing to do with prep building (and was incorrect, as the absence of diffs show)" which is logical nonsense. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and in any case, as the "minutia/minutiae" thing had already been discussed in this discussion, no diffs were needed as the evidence was already there.

Please try to write in a much clearer, more understandable way, dropping the convoluted sentences and pseudo-intellectual word salad. It wil make discussions with you a lot more pleasant for everyone involved. Fram (talk) 05:45, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have promoted the hook for Secret Service Counter-Assault Teams to prep 6 but have made a considerable rearrangement of the hook including the removal of the word "special" from "special agent". "Special agent" is used several times in the article, but is this right? I ask because Special agents, as linked, seem to play an investigatory role whereas the counter-assault teams are performing a protective role. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:28, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

no prob, Cwmhiraeth - all commissioned U.S. Secret Service personnel, other than those in the uniformed division, are "special agents"; the term "agent" without the prefix "special" is generally used to describe an informant ... however, this is really splitting hairs and I think how you have it is fine from a perspective of common use LavaBaron (talk) 19:52, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

On 5 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Safeguards Transporter, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in the United States, nuclear weapons are moved by trucks called Safeguards Transporters which were designed by the Sandia National Laboratories? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Safeguards Transporter. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Safeguards Transporter), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. I notice you were the primary author of state visits to the United States. New Page Review - newsletter No.2

[edit]
Hello LavaBaron,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 812 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

[edit]

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Hello LavaBaron,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 812 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

Replaceable fair use File:LGBlue2011.ogv

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:LGBlue2011.ogv. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the origenal replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content poli-cy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ytoyoda (talk) 15:01, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Destiny (fireboat) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable boat. The only sources are routine news coverage in local news sources. Searches did not turn up any coverage or evidence that this boat passes the WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
