I know what it means I just wasn’t seeing the clarity being implemented. It was fine as it was is what I’m getting at. Rusted AutoParts 20:04, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Polish physicists by field

[edit]

Hi there, I saw you recently created Category:Polish physicists by field, but why is this needed? Why not just have the individual fields under Category:Polish physicists as is done for the other countries? -Kj cheetham (talk) 12:38, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question similar to the above from Kj cheetham. I see you just created a new Category:Quantum electrodynamicists and have started making edits such as this whereby Freeman Dyson is no longer a "quantum physicist" but has become a "quantum electrodynamicist." The expression "quantum electrodynamicist" is not a usual way to talk about physicists who interest themselves in quantum electrodynamics. I believe this category is a mistake, and I ask you to stop changing the articles of multiple physicists until the community has had a chance to discuss the usefulness of this category. HouseOfChange (talk) 20:22, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And now also Category:Loop quantum gravity researchers has just been created under Category:Quantum gravity physicists, when List of loop quantum gravity researchers seems to do the job too. Please do slow down creating categories without consensus. -Kj cheetham (talk) 22:02, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to defend the LQG people category; I'm not sure if the guidelines specify it, but I believe that lists & categories are complementary. The way they present information can diverge; e.g. a list doesn't have to be sorted alphabetically and a category, by default, always is. --Tarnoob (talk) 22:05, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Having both a list and a category is okay in principle, as per WP:CLN, but my concern is more a case of being cautious when creating too many potentially unneeded niche categories as per WP:OVERCAT. -Kj cheetham (talk) 22:14, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it's far from overcat. 'LQG researchers' is relatively large (like, >10) & has a potential to grow in tens, if not a hundred; it's also sharply defined, doesn't overlap with anything else & is defining for some members, because it can be their main field of research & the main reason they're famous. Also, its supercategory ('Quantum gravity physicists') has a number of other members which don't fall into any sister category (like, say, 'String theorists'). Maybe it counts as lack of overlap, but I'm not sure, so I've mentioned it separately. --Tarnoob (talk) 22:25, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Quantum electrodynamicists has been nominated for deletion. A discussion is taking place to decide whether this proposal complies with the categorization guidelines. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the category's entry on the categories for discussion page. Thank you.
