If law made a natural bedfellow for politics, so too, at least for a deputy of the left, did freemasonry. Crispi became a Master Mason in the Palermo lodge of the Grand Orient called ‘I Rigeneratori del 12 gennaio 1848 al 1860 Garibaldini’ on 13 November 1860.15 There is nothing to suggest that he had been a freemason before 1860, or that he had even been remotely interested in becoming one, and it is likely that he joined this newly created or renamed lodge chiefly at the prompting of Garibaldi, a committed mason and a future Grand Master. Many of the leading democrats who had been involved in the events of 1860 were also freemasons, among them Bertani and Adriano Lemmi—another future Grand Master—and they, too, must have encouraged Crispi to join, no doubt pointing out to him that the struggle with the moderates for the soul of Italy, which they had just lost, would soon have to be fought out within Italian freemasonry. This, indeed, would have been the main reason why a lodge of ‘Garibaldini’ was created in Palermo, and why Crispi—clearly a big catch—was rushed through the two lower masonic grades, perhaps in the space of a few weeks.16

Crispi was never a great enthusiast for secret societies, which he saw as more likely to stifle than to encourage individual initiative: he had apparently been rather dismissive of Mazzini's Young Italy, and had criticized it for being somewhat ineffective;17 and though he could happily endorse the humanitarian principles of freemasonry and appreciate its potential for spreading the message of the democrats and mobilizing opinion against Roman Catholicism, he was never to devote very much energy to it. There are a number of references in his correspondence to masonic affairs, particularly in the early 1860s, when he got drawn into the disputes between the Turin and Palermo branches of the Grand Orient that were threatening at the time to split the brotherhood; but it was not until the mid1880s, when the challenge from the Church seemed to be growing and freemasonry itself was becoming more militant and political, that Crispi showed any signs of getting seriously involved.18
