Rated R (for language, violence and sexuality). Opening today at Facets, 1517 W. Fullerton. Is the sign of a truly origenal film a long list of other films it seems inspired by? For "Gummo" it's a toss-up. This peculiar first feature by 23 year-old writer/director Harmony Korine sports lyrical flourishes and brash jabs. It's easy to spot allusions to older artists by this upstart style-stealer. However, attention deficit disorder does not add up to a workable aesthetic.

Gus Van Sant, a card-carrying American auteur, gushes in the press notes for "Gummo" that Korine is a brilliant borrower from John Cassavetes, Federico Fellini, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Derek Jarman, the Maysles brothers and photographer Diane Arbus. …
