One of the many puzzles surrounding the life and career of the fifteenth century mystic Margery Kempe is the fact that she was accused several times of being a Lollard, one of the heretical followers of John Wyclif. Kempe was not a Lollard by any stretch of the imagination. She did not espouse any heretical doctrines, and declared to one examining tribunal:
3yf her be any clerke a-mongys 3ow alle that can preuyn that I haue seyd any worde other-wise than I awt to do, I am redy for to amende it with good wille. I wil neithyr meynteyn errowr ne heresy, for it is my ful wil to holdyn as Holy Chirche holdith & fully to plesyn God.(1)
