–July 20: Suspect James Eagan Holmes shot 71 people, killing 12 and wounding 59, at an Aurora movie theater. Hundreds of movie goers had just begun watching the opening of a Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

–April 16, 2007: At Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., 59 people were shot by Seung-Hui Cho; 32 were killed and 27 wounded.

–August 1, 1966: Charles Whitman shot 47 people from the clock tower at the University of Texas, Austin; 16 were killed and 31 wounded.

–Oct. 16, 1991: In Killeen, Texas, 45 people were shot, 23 fatally and 22 wounded, by George Hennard at a Luby’s Cafeteria.

–July 18, 1984: At a McDonald’s restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif., 40 people were shot, 21 fatally and 19 wounded, by James Oliver Huberty.

–April 20, 1999: At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., a total of 39 people were shot, 13 fatally and 26 wounded, by students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

–November 5, 2009: Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan shot 37 people, 13 fatally and 24 wounded, at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood, Texas.

–May 21, 1998: Kipland Kinkel shot 25 people, four fatally, including his parents, wounding 18 others in Springfield, Oregon.

–February 14, 2008: At a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, 21 students were shot, five fatally and 16 wounded, by a former student of the school.

–August 20, 1986: Pat Sherrill shot 20 people, 14 fatally and six wounded, at a post office in Edmond, Okla.

–March 10, 2009: Michael McLendon shot 16 people, 10 of whom were killed, six wounded, during a mostly domestic-violence rampage in Coffee and Geneva counties in Alabama.

–June 18, 1990: James Edward Pough shot 14 people, killing 10 and wounding four at a General Motors Acceptance Corp. office in Jacksonville, Fla.

–July 12, 1976: Edward Charles Allaway shot nine people, seven fatally and two wounded in the library of California State University, Fullerton.
