One person died and another six people were injured Monday night after the driver of a speeding Tesla ran a red light, causing a four-car crash and fire in Aurora, according to the police department.
An officer stationed at East Alameda Parkway and South Quintero Way clocked a Tesla traveling westbound on Alemeda at 97 mph, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
The Aurora officer tried to pull the Tesla driver over, but the driver appeared to accelerate, police said. The officer did not pursue the driver.
Police said the Tesla driver continued speeding west and, less than a mile later, ran a red light at Airport Boulevard near Buckley Space Force Base.
The Tesla collided with a car crossing the intersection — which was traveling northbound and had a green light — before spinning out and crashing into two additional cars, including an Aurora police vehicle, according to the department.
It’s not clear when the crash happened, but police first posted about the incident on social media at 8:25 p.m. Monday.
Police said the Tesla driver, believed to be a 26-year-old man, died at the scene of the crash.
Paramedics took two adults and four children from the northbound car to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. The Aurora police officer and fourth driver were not injured.
The Tesla’s battery was damaged in the crash and caught fire, police said. To minimize hazardous water runoff, the fire was allowed to burn itself out before crews towed it from the scene.
Police said the intersection of Alameda Parkway and Airport Boulevard was closed for roughly six hours during the crash cleanup and investigation. It reopened at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The crash remains under investigation.
