Background
Tracy is the most aggressive driver in the Champ Car series. Last year, that aggressiveness gave the Champ Car the most exposure it had received in years when he fought with Alex Tagliani in the pits after he carelessly rammed into him exiting the runoff area at Turn 6. Tracy’s go-for-broke style probably has cost him championships over the years. But in 2003, he won his only title. Tracy has been in Champ Cars since 1991 and is the most experienced driver in the series. Over the years, he has driven for top teams such as Team Penske, Newman/Haas Racing, Team KOOL Green and Player’s/Forsythe. He is seventh on the all-time victory list with 31 and seventh in poles with 25.
In San Jose
In 2005, Tracy started third and passed Oriol Servia for second when he short-filled on the first pit stop. Last year, Tracy finished 15th after crashing into Alex Tagliani on Lap 52, leading to their fight in the pits.
2007 Summary
Las Vegas: Tracy won the provisional pole and had a pretty good run, finishing third. Fueling problems that extended his pit stop on Lap 28 and forced him to re-pit on Lap 33 hurt his cause.
Portland: After missing the Long Beach and Houston races because of a compression fracture to his first lumbar vertebrae in his lower back suffered during Saturday practice at Long Beach, Tracy made a not-so-triumphant return. In Friday practice, he hit the wall after it appeared that the rear end got loose. During the rainy Saturday qualifying, he spun off the track and qualified 13th. On Lap 2 he lost his rear end and was passed by two cars and fell to 15th. He pitted on Lap 17, attempting an alternate pit strategy. But with no yellows, Tracy could only climb as high as ninth before finishing 10th.
Cleveland: Despite losing his front wing twice in the first six laps, Tracy won for the first time since the Cleveland race in 2005. Tracy lost his wing the first time when he put it into Graham Rahal’s left-rear tire on Lap 3. He pitted for a new wing under yellow and did not lose a lap. On the restart on Lap 6 he tangled with Bruno Junqueira and lost another wing. Once again, he pitted for repairs under yellow and remained on the lead lap. He topped off his fuel on Lap 9, still under yellow, which enabled him to make his last stop on Lap 63. On that pit stop, he reentered the race seventh then cycled into the lead when the top six cars pitted.
Mont-Tremblant: After winning in Cleveland, Tracy’s tough luck resumed. He hit the wall during the morning warmup because of a steering-rack problem, forcing him to start 17th in his backup car. While running 10th on Lap 14, he was spun by Will Power, and fell to 14th. On Lap 28, he suffered a blown engine under yellow and was through for the day, finishing 15th.
Toronto: On the opening lap, Tracy got Simon Pagenaud’s front wing debris caught under his front wing. Unable to steer the car, he hit the wall between Turns 7 and 8, suffering heavy left-front suspension damage.
