The Republic of Namibia is located in southwest Africa, sharing a border with South Africa to the south, Botswana and Zambia to the east and Angola to the north. Its western border is 1570km of Atlantic facing coastline.
Namibia is a dry country, receiving the least rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa. The Namib Desert spans Namibia’s entire coastline and at some places is hundreds of kilometres wide.
The temperature along the coast tends to be cooler than elsewhere in the country. This is due to the Benguela current of the Atlantic Ocean. This current also clauses lower rainfall and a frequent dense fog.

As far as tourism goes, the High Season runs from June to October. Accommodation is at a premium during the high season so try to book well in advance. The Shoulder season of May is nice and mild, and a great month for general travel.
November, the other Shoulder Season, often sees short, intense, heavy rainfall.
Low season, from December to April, is the rainy season. Many tracks become impassable at this time of the year due to the heavy rains. The country is also very hot and humid at this time of year and can be unpleasant.
The capital city is Windhoek.

The best season for surfing is May thru Sept, with consistent 6-10ft (2-3.3m) southwest swells and decent weather. Surf never gets huge here but it does get consistent swells due to its long Atantic coastline.
The central coast areas around the towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are the areas most popular with surfers. Waves are more accessible here than they are on much of the remaining coast.


There are many unsurfed waves in Nambia and the potential for discovering new, empty breaks is huge. It will be no easy feat actually getting to them though.
