The Mid Atlantic ridge, a huge underwater volcanic moutain chain runs the entire length of the Atlantic but surfaces in only a few spots. One of these spots is the nine islands of the Azores, 1300 km west of Lisbon
Azores Surfing Info and Details
The main spots are Ribeira Grande, a powerful beachbreak with consistent waves, and Rabo de Peixe, a left hander created by the harbour development. Both waves are situated on the north coast of Sao Miguel. There are plenty of other uncrowded waves on offer but many are hard to get to. If you are considering a serious surfing vacation in the Azores then make sure you plan your car hire into the cost.

The surf that accompanies these islands is both powerful, unchartered, sometimes dangerous and most of all crowdless environments (yep - just you are your mates ripping it up!). The position of the Azores, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, ensures that there is always plenty of swell. The great thing about surfing Sao Miguel is that the island will pick up swell from every direction and there is almost always a surf spot on this island with surf.

In the summer months you will see surf of 4 to 6ft as standard but when winter kicks in you will see swells in excess of 15ft at times. Being so close to the weather systems means that the duration of these swells is often short lived but with so many fronts moving through you do not need to worry when the next one is coming its normally only a day away! Find out here how waves are made.
