The IEM attempts to estimate an areal averaged daily precipitation by climate district. These values go back to 1893, so ranks can be made comparing this fall to all previous on record. The featured map does just that comparing the fall 2023 season vs each previous. A value of 1 would indicate the wettest on record and 131 driest. Iowa is shown on the dry side of average with drier values found off to the southeast and wetter to the north and west. These types of maps often show regional patterns as persistence in upper atmosphere flow patterns begets weather patterns that tend to repeat over the course of a season.
