How to Add a Surf Spot to the Surf Atlas

How to Submit Your Surf Spot

Although adding a surf spot to the Surfing Waves Surf Spot Map is pretty straight forward, this guide should clear up any questions you may have. Take a moment to have a quick read through to make sure you add a spot correctly for the benefit of other surfers out there.

Step 1: Log In
You don't have to be a member of the site to add a surf spot to the map. However, registering only takes a minute and all you need is a valid e-mail address. Becoming a member not only allows you to add spots to the map and update regions, but it also allows to post on the surf forum, create your own surf picture and video galleries, and extend your member profile.

Step 2: Navigate to the Correct Region
The easiest way to navigate to the correct region of the map is by clicking on the coloured regions of the map. Using the map you can drill down until you reach the page where the "Add a Spot" option becomes available. Surf spots can only be added at the most detailed level of the map.

Once you arrive at the lowest level on the map you'll see the "Add Spot" link. Click on this to go to the next step.

You can also navigate to the correct region using the text links that are present on each page in the "Countries and Regions" table.

The final way of navigating to a spot is by using the site search function located at the top of the right-hand column of every page on Surfing Waves. Enter your region or spot location and hopefully the right result will appear magically!

Step 3: Completing the Spot Details

The Add New Spot ButtonWhen you reach the correct region page the "add new spot" button will viewable. This link also appears on the individual surf spot pages throughout the surf map — handy if you are adding a number of different surf spots in the same region.

Click on the "add new spot" button or link and you should now see the add / edit surf spot page.

The Edit Surf Spot Page DetailNow you can go ahead and add the surf spot details. It is probably best to add the location first. You can do this by zooming in on the map using the +, -, and arrow keys on the map. Zooming in ensures that the surf spot location is in the correct position.

If you're using the "Satellite" or "Hybrid" map options, you may be able to see the waves breaking at the surf spot you are adding.

It's quick and easy to set the location and use the drop down menus to add the break summary information.

The rest of the information can be added with as few or as many details as you wish. The more information you add the more effective the map will be.

Once you have completed all the details about the spot, simply click the "save" button at the bottom of the page. The surf spot will then be added onto the map for all to see.

If you are not signed in, your surf spot will require a moderator to check the details. Otherwise, your surf spot will appear on the map straight away.

If you realise you need to make some changes to the spot or have remembered some additional information, then just click the "edit" button in the "contribute" section of the page.
