- Big Science is the debut studio album by avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson. It was the first of a seven-album deal Anderson signed with Warner Bros. Records. It is best known for the single "O Superman", which unexpectedly reached No. 2 in the UK. The work is a selection of highlights from her eight-hour production United States Live, which was itself released as a 5-LP boxed set and book in 1984. United States Live was originally a performance piece, in which music was only one element. After Big Science, music played a larger role in Anderson's work. Although considered her debut album, Anderson had previously recorded one side of a 2-LP set titled You're the Guy I Want to Share My Money With, a collaboration released on Giorno Poetry Systems with William S. Burroughs and John Giorno. She had also contributed two pieces to a 1977 compilation of electronic music. (en)

Il est surtout connu pour le single "O Superman", qui a atteint inopinément la deuxième place au Royaume-Uni. Il s’agit d’une sélection des temps forts de sa production de huit heures, United States Live, sortie en 1984 sous forme de coffret de 5 disques ainsi que d'un livre. United States Live était à l’origine une pièce de performance dans laquelle la musique n’était qu’un élément. Après son album Big Science, la musique joua un rôle plus important dans le travail de l'artiste. Bien que considéré elle-même comme son premier album, Laurie avait déjà enregistré un ensemble de 2 disques intitulé You're the Guy I Want to Share My Money With, une collaboration réalisée sur Giorno Poetry Systems avec William S. Burroughs et John Giorno, sur lequel elle a contribué à six chansons. Elle avait également contribué sur deux pièces pour une compilation de musique électronique en 1977. (fr)

Si tratta di una rielaborazione di alcuni brani estratti dalla tournée dello spettacolo United States Live, performance della durata di circa 6 ore. Nell'album fanno la loro comparsa gli strumenti e gli effetti sonori messi a punto dalla stessa Anderson, tra cui il tape bow violin, ossia un violino su cui è montata una testina di magnetofono, suonato con un archetto che come corda ha un pezzo di nastro magnetico inciso. Il disco contiene il singolo O Superman (for Massenet), che è stato utilizzato verso la fine degli anni '80 dal Ministero della sanità italiano come colonna sonora di una serie di spot pubblicitari per la prevenzione dell'AIDS.
