- Un doble mandat és el pràctica en què una mateixa persona ocupa més d'un càrrec electe o públic alhora. Per exemple, si un candidat és elegit alcalde d'un poble o guanya un escó en una col·lectivitat en una elecció, i després la mateixa persona guanya un escó en l'assemblea legislativa estatal o provincial en una altra elecció general, es tracta d'un doble mandat. A vegades, la llei prohibeix el doble mandat. Per exemple, als estats federals, les persones que ocupen càrrecs federals no poden ocupar-ne d'estatals. Als estats amb separació de poders, els membres dels braços executiu, legislatiu i judicial són diferents, ja siguin càrrecs electes o no. Als estats amb assemblees bicamerals, no es pot ser membre d'ambdues cambres alhora. El titular d'un càrrec que sigui elegit a un altre en què el doble mandat estigui prohibit ha de deixar el càrrec que té o rebutjar el nou. (ca)

- A dual mandate is the practice in which elected officials serve in more than one elected or other public position simultaneously. This practice is sometimes known as double jobbing in Britain and cumul des mandats in France; not to be confused with double dipping in the United States (e.g. being employed by and receiving a retirement pension from the same public authority at the same time). Thus, if someone who is already mayor of a town or city councillor becomes elected as MP or senator at the national or state legislature and retains both positions, this is a dual mandate. Political and legal approaches toward dual mandate-holding vary widely. In some countries, dual mandates are a well-established part of the political culture; in others they may be prohibited by law. For example, in federal states, federal office holders are often not permitted to hold state office. In most states, membership of an independent judiciary or civil service generally disqualifies a person from simultaneously holding office in the executive or the legislature. In states with a presidential or dualist-parliamentary system of government, members of the executive cannot simultaneously be members of the legislature and vice versa. In states with bicameral legislatures, one usually cannot simultaneously be a member of both houses. The holder of one office who wins election or appointment to another where a dual mandate is prohibited must either resign the former office or refuse the new one. (en)
