- Kunst des Mordes (auch Der Mord als schöne Kunst betrachtet) ist ein Essay des englischen Autors Thomas De Quincey, in dem er ausführt, dass Mord eine Kunstform darstellen kann. Seine gedankliche Voraussetzung ist, dass Kunst als amoralisch angesehen wird und nur der Ästhetik verpflichtet ist. De Quincey, der durch die Darstellung seiner Opium-Sucht in seinem Buch Bekenntnisse eines englischen Opiumessers bekannt geworden ist, veröffentlichte seinen Essay 1827 im Februarheft des Londoner Blackwoods Magazine. Ironisch merkt er an: If once a man indulges in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination. De Quinceys Thema ist nicht die Beobachtung, Verfolgung und Bestrafung von Mördern, sondern die Betrachtung des Mordes nach ästhetischen Kriterien, wie ein Werk der schönen Künste: Nachdem der Moral genüge getan worden sei, könne der Connaisseur innehalten, um den Grad an Brutalität oder Finesse in der Ausführung des Verbrechens zu bewerten, so wie bei jeder anderen menschlichen Äußerung. Ne doit pas être confondu avec Du crime considéré comme un des beaux-arts. ) De l'assassinat considéré comme un des beaux-arts (On Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts) est un ouvrage de Thomas de Quincey paru en 1854 sous sa forme définitive. Il se compose de trois parties :
* Un mémoire publié à l'origine dans le Blackwood's Magazine en 1827, sous la forme d'une pseudo-conférence.
* Un mémoire supplémentaire publié en 1839 dans le même magazine, faisant suite au premier.
* Un post-scriptum ajouté en 1854 lors de la publication de ces textes en un volume. C'est la partie consacrée aux meurtres de John Williams, qui a acquis une juste célébrité et fini par éclipser le reste. (fr)

The essay is a fictional, satirical account of an address made to a gentleman's club concerning the aesthetic appreciation of murder. It focuses particularly on a series of murders allegedly committed in 1811 by John Williams in the neighborhood of Ratcliffe Highway, London. The essay was enthusiastically received and led to numerous sequels, including "A Second Paper on Murder Considered as one of the Fine Arts" in 1839 and a "Postscript" in 1854. These essays have exerted a strong influence on subsequent literary representations of crime and were lauded by such critics as G. K. Chesterton, Wyndham Lewis and George Orwell. De Quincey also refers to the Williams murders in his "On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth". The 1964 French film On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts takes its name from the essay. (en)
