1917 (2019)
Fantastic cimematography
Superbly shot and edited. A beautiful film to watch. The film has suspense throughout and was throughly enoyable
The Two Popes (2019)
Fascinating
Superbly acted and extremely relevant. Portrays well the need for change, not only in the catholic church but in society in general. The relationship between the two popes is fascinating.
I loved the football scene at the end.
In a Lonely Place (1950)
Humphrey Bogart is solid.
A struggle with self indentity. Bogarts character meets a girl and under a murder investigation struggles with insecurity. A movie of its time that is solely based on the characters in it and its a good reflection of cinema of the time
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Awesome!
A great 3rd installment. Martin lawrence is funny. Will smith is great. Explosions. More explosions. Ridiculous storylines. Exaxtly whag you expext from an action movie. Lots of fun
A Star Is Born (1954)
The rise and fall of Hollywood
Superbly chronicles the simultaneous rise and fall of an actor and an actress in the extremely competitive hollywood scene.
Great characters and wonderful acting. This film takes you through the ups and downs of their lives. From the difficult of landing that first break to the harsh realities of alcohol abuse.
The Player (1992)
Arty and enjoyable
Good film with a unique theme. I think the directing style of this film is interesting and very arty. The film is well made . Its about a hollywood movie producer who gets death threats from a writer and he tries to find out who sent them.
Il traditore (2019)
An insight into Buscetta and the fall of the Mafia.
A great insight into the life of Buscetta and the beginning of the end of the mafia at that time.
Starts off like a traditional mafia movie and then goes into more depth about the story and the fall out. I thought the court scenes were particularly well portrayed. They gave a good insight into the difficulty and at times chaotic nature of the convictions.
Jallikattu (2019)
A Loud chaotic buffalo chase.
Intense movie about indian villagers chasing an escape buffalo for 1hr 30. A representation of a chaotic indian society perhaps. Good sound effects and interesting camera work.
The film is chaotic, probably deliberately. Strangely it was uncomfortably loud, at times painfully. Im not sure if this was a cinema choice or intended to be like this for effect.
Sorry We Missed You (2019)
Another hard hitting gem by Ken Loach
This film is a great portrayal of a working class family trying to survive in particularly difficult circumstances. It shows how often you sacrifice your relationships to try to put bread on the table. The long term effect of this is shown wonderfully in this film.
It teaches us to be try to be more understanding of those around us.
The actors are brilliant and the script is expertly written.
Jìyuántái qihào (2019)
The animation saves this film
This really felt like a was watching a series of consecutively drawn pictures. It was beautiful. The film and story could have been better and was outright strange in certain places. But it did enough to keep me interested throughout.
The Cave (2019)
A great story but a disappointing film
While the real life story of the Thai boys football teams rescue was wonderful, this film was an extremely poor production. The real people playing themselves is comical at times, through no real fault of their own. Afterall they arent actors. Its very poorly laid out and extremely slow.
Ms. Purple (2019)
When work and family become a burden
About a girl who works in a noraebang and the struggles that kind of environment brigs with it. She is also balancing being the full time carer of her father. A harsh look on the burden that life can sometimes bring on people.
I thought the film lacked a bit more development and substance which could have improved it.
Adults in the Room (2019)
A fight between the Greeks and the EU to resolve the financial crisis.
Interesting story about the greek financial crisis and the political struggles that were endured. Good insight into the struggles and flaws of the EU. Potentially quite a one sided view of things.
Superb musical background.
Gimtine (2019)
A boys relationship with his mother and her home land of which he knows very little
A good drama that focuses on character development. This aspect was interestingly portrayed. A boys relationship with his mother and her motherland of which he knows very little. I thought the script lacked a little direction.
Gisaengchung (2019)
An original dark comedy about class struggles
This is a well written and well perfomed original film. With a lot of repetitive cinema these day i felt this was something new. I felt connected and engaged with the character throughout the film. There are several well directed tense moments throughout the film. A popular topic of class struggled well portrayed. Its always nice to see foreign language films having worldwide success.
Kes (1969)
Karl pilkingtons favourite film
A good insight into growing up in an underprivileged environment. Difficulties of school and home life. Well written and acted. Low production value.
The football scene is absolutely brilliant.
Oliver! (1968)
A classic musical
Like a lot of musical the scenes are elaborate and performed with great enthusiasm. Great perfomances all round and great entertainment.
Wasp Network (2019)
Potential but rather messy
Without getting onto the political correctness of the film, it was fairly entertaining but lacked direction. The narrative was confusing at times and certain stories seemed to be forgotten or abandoned half way through
Savage (2019)
An entertaining story about gang life growing up in New Zealand
Good story about the harshness of growing up in a gang. A little explored world of growing up in a gang in New Zealand. Entertaining film througout. I thought the film could have had more central plot and developed the characters more.
Boy Meets Gun (2019)
A light hearted darl comedy with an interesting take on modern life.
Marteen is coasting through life when he find a gun. This causes a drastic change to his personality. He become more assertive in his decision making. The character is very interesting and well portrayed. A fun light drama/dark comedy which is funny at times. An interesting take on a drifting through life.
Mr. Jones (2019)
A good if brief dive into journalism during the early years of the Soviet union
Journalist from wales/DLG foreign secretary who discovers the famine in Soviet Russia that is being covered up. Decent film. Could have been better with more depth.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
A good but different sequel
Interesting throughout. Borders on a superhero film but keeps in touch with the real world. Great performance by ewan McGregor.
Definitely swayed away from the horror genre. Very few scares.
The King (2019)
Decent enough
Decent enough but i thought it lacked enough content. It felt like it was a battle and it was over. There wasnt enough story or background. Would maybe have been suited to a 6 part tv series.
Acting was good but i didnt get enough from the film to recommend it with any vigor
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
Fantastic
Fascinating insight into the minds of those who prepared and then fought in the trenches. Some unbelievable footage and some great story telling. It really helps to get an understanding of what these men thought before during and after the war. I was surprised to hear of the reception they received on there return. This must have been demoralizing and shocking for those men who has just participated in this brutal war.
I also enjoyed the political aspect of the point of this war. Its evident that the people really didnt know why they were fighting.
Frozen II (2019)
Pleasant movie
Like the first one there are great songs and great animation throughout. The storyline is relatively engaging. A good family movie.
