As part of our work to improve the current user experience with UploadWizard, we are working on a way to automatically detect external links when a media is uploaded on Commons through UploadWizard, in order to facilitate their evaluation by the community.

Per community suggestion, we already investigated the effect of external links on the likelihood of deletion of an image in phab:T369273, identifying a number of potentially problematic domains.

This work is planned for October through December 2024.

Workflow

[edit]
Mockup of a potential message for problematic external source

The tool would parse the “Source” field in UploadWizard, and then evaluate if the data inputted in the field corresponds to a link to a social media network and/or a stock image supplier (identified as potentially problematic domains).

If the source corresponds to one of such domains, UploadWizard would create automatically a Structured Data on Commons statement source of file (P7482) file available on the internet (Q74228490), with qualifiers “operator (P137) = <the operator of the website where the image originated>” and “described at URL (P973) = <link to source>”. This would make the potentially problematic uploads easily accessible by administrators and moderators.

The operator field and the regex used to determine it will be configurable, so that the community can be in charge of defining as it deems appropriate which domains to flag as problematic.

Additionally, if there is community consensus about it, we could consider adding a user alert during the upload process if an external source is detected in the file. In the page, we are sharing some potential designs for the alert. We welcome community feedback about how it is phrased and whether it may be useful.
