Welcome. If you leave me a message here, I will usually reply here. I try to keep the conversation in one place, but I may do something different depending on the situation. Thanks, --J.smith (talk) 01:42, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help

[edit]

Thank You very much for proving that I did ask for permission. If we have more people like Megapixie here, I think no one will even bother to contribute anything to Wikipedia anymore.

I have one more problem and hope that you could help me. I mistakenly uploaded the same image to another location: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Yuyuan.jpg. Now, when I try to link the image to an article, it always points to the wrong link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Yuyuan.jpg. What can I do to correct it? Tinbin (talk) 18:22, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. :) Let me know if you need anything else. I've deleted that image from Wikipedia so it will refer to the commons picture instead. J.smith (talk) 18:49, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Again, Thanks  :) Tinbin (talk) 19:06, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to bother you again. Could I change the image's filename, making it easier for searching? Tinbin (talk) 21:26, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed you voted to keep this image: [1] Unfortunately, however, the image is definitely a copy vio. It was copied from this web page: [2] The license is stated at the bottom: 'Copyright © 1996 Dr. Charles S. Finch, III, MD All rights reserved by the author.' If Commons uses it, we are Violating Dr Finch's rights. By the way, user Crucifixion is very infamous for his copy vios. See the messages at the bottom of his talk page: [3] Most of his Commons images are just copy vios sadly. I hope this helps to increase your understanding of the situation. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:18, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • The thing is someone identifiable took that picture...and that person could sue Commons if he wished. Anyone can take a picture of the object being discussed since it is in the Metropolitan Museum where photography is allowed. So, its replacable and there are other legitimate flickr images. Crucifixion did a whole slew of copyvios and Commons can't just condone his activity here. --Leoboudv (talk) 06:00, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

profanation of Polish Flag

[edit]

Polish Law about profanation of Polish Flag. I can say also that 2nd May is the Day of Natonal Flag. But unfortunetely this is not public holiday ;( Intresting is thing that the most of Polish people think that flag is white-red, but according to the pattern flag is white-crimson. --JDavid (talk) 20:15, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the QI review of Image:Bothriechis_lateralis_(1).jpg, I was wondering if the edited version fixed at least the noise issue? I worked on the background mostly Image:Bothriechis_lateralis_(1)_edited.jpg. I'm learning so much from these reviews, they are very helpful! All the best TimVickers (talk) 15:56, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You applied a blur onto the background? That helped the noise quite a bit. The face of the snake a little bit over-exposed... auto balancing should take care of that. J.smith (talk) 18:49, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did try that, it wasn't very successful. How about the new edit (saved on top of old one)? I adjusted the curves in the green channel. TimVickers (talk) 22:23, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

[edit]

Dear Jsmith, Thank you for your 2 comments about uploading higher resolution flickr images. Can you briefly inform me how I would do that? Do I need Photoshop for this? In this one case: Image:Sarcophagus of Horkhebit2007.jpg, all I did was copy the flickr image onto my computer before I uploaded it. I didn't crop or manipulate it. I apologise if my question is naive but I am not an expert in photography. Any response which you can give is appreciated. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 04:34, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi J. Smith. Thank you very much. I didn't see that fact, due to the CC license offered. Next time I would stay alert. Regards, Lucien (es | m | com) 08:14, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I uploaded several images this morning from that user, but the images were correcty licensed as you can see here. It seems the author changed recently the licenses to non-commercial use, I'ts not really my fault... The "need" for people :)

[edit]

In practice the "need" for CUs is as much about folk who are active as anything else. Speaking of which there is usually a need for further admins to run around with mops etc..... any thoughts :) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:23, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, ok. I saw that the request for check-user page has been moving quite slow, but I know a lot of CU activity happens behind the scenes due to it's (often) sensitive nature. Donno... haven't given it much thought. J.smith (talk) 19:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good point :) I've archived the ones that are done (no such thing as clerks here!). I'll prod someone on the remaining one. Equally much of the work takes place from other areas than formal requests.
If you do give admin tools some thought in time I'd be likely to support you (nom if you wish). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:45, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the confidence. :) Maybe in a few weeks or a month. I like being able to focus on my own work. Been trying to convince myself to buy a D40 or D60. J.smith (talk) 17:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do understand the wish to do "real" things. Admin is a PITA however the more of us who do it the less worse it is :) I might eventually achieve my aim of getting more edits than deletions but it has not happened so far.
As you have found Commons is different to en wp - there is good stuff and good people here. If I can help, let me know. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 19:19, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I edit commons in two phases... at work I often don't have a lot of time so I like to do repetitive tasks that don't take a lot of time. Processing tickets, flicker review, etc. When I'm at home I like to work on my own projects like uploading my own pictures.
Yeah, EN:W sometimes has the feeling of a castle under siege. Too many people trying to push their own agendas. It's not like that here... much better mojo. J.smith (talk) 19:50, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image BusMIO

[edit]

Hi, J.smith, The flickr account is from my best friend who take the photo of one MIO's station in Cali, the reason why my friend only has 4 images, is because he has a few free time to take photos in the city and upload to flickr. Please don't delete the picture. Thank you --Jnkosanchz (talk) 01:10, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

J.smith, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin.

Also consider joining #wikimedia-admin, the cross-wiki coordination channel for Wikimedia administrators. Ask any channel operator for an invite exemption (or anyone in the channel may /invite you in temporarily). All admins from all projects are welcome.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....

Is there anyone reviewing flickr images?

[edit]

Dear J. Smith, Is there anyone actively reviewing flickr images? I see there is a backlog of 190+ images waiting for review...now that SterkeBak has removed himself from the list of Administrators (something which saddens me): I was wondering if you could inspect these 2 images by me?

Thank You. I don't understand why the flickr reviewbot hasn't marked images for 2-3 days now. I have seen 1 image uploaded from November 20 still waiting for flickr review. Now that SterkeBak has left, the situation is becoming really bad. He used to actively mark images here. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:15, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure why the bot isn't working... Both of those images look fine, so I've marked them appropriately. I'll work on the que a bit more tomorrow when I get some more time. J.smith (talk) 03:48, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any other images you would like me to put a "rush" on? --J.smith (talk) 03:51, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I may have one great image upcoming....but I have to persuade the flickr owner to kindly change the image license first. If I have any new images, I will certainly let you now. Anyhow, the backlog of flickr images really scares me. When its 190 and counting, I worry. (I just sent a note to Kanonkas about the situation) I really miss SterkeBak. He was incredible--he sometimes worked 3 straight hours marking new flickr images. But I know most of you don't have the time for this--and neither would I. With kind Regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:31, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dear J. Smith,

If you have time could you mark this image please: Image:Hatnofer's funerary mask (Mary Harrsch).jpg ? This is the one I mentioned yesterday. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:00, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good, thusly marked. --J.smith (talk) 21:22, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks a million J. Smith! I have uploaded 200+ flickr images on Commons (most on ancient history which is my area of interest) and none have been rejected. The only problem is getting them marked with flickrbot down. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:44, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, if you are interested, I saw these 4 images by other contributors which would be excellent contributions to Commons...if only someone can mark them. Their licenses check out:

Would you consider marking them? As for the last black and white image, it has been here waiting for review since Nov. 20. I have advised Bryan about the problem of his flickrbot...but don't expect immediate action here sadly. --Leoboudv (talk) 22:12, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah those look good too! I've marked them. --J.smith (talk) 02:31, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your help. What surprises is why some people keep placing 'all rights reserved' or 'Non-commercial' licensed flickr images on Commons I guess some people don't learn. Someone, it might have been Admin Lar, once told me to try to contact people on flickr mail and see if an image owner wld license a picture freely. (which is what I did with that great mummy mask.) And yet many people still don't even bother here. Strange. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:41, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, people seem more then willing to share there work if you just as. --J.smith (talk) 07:14, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But the WIKIPEDIA IN Portuguese does't have this picture!!!--Vitor mazuco (talk) 20:59, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Subject to Portuguese's image policies, upload it there under fair-use. If PT-WP doesn't permit fair use, your out of luck. Commons don't permit fair-use either. J.smith (talk) 21:00, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

5 images

[edit]

Dear J. smith, Could you kindly mark these 5 images:

The first two images were uploaded by me. The first image, Djehuty's bracelet, is cropped...so it will need human review anyway. The second image is of Tut's actual bed....which is noticeably absent on Commons. The final 3 images are fine images by other contributors and their licenses check out. Can you help? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:07, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. All of those looked good and I have marked them appropriately. --J.smith (talk) 04:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your help J. Smith. I appreciate it. I am certain many people will like the image of Tut's bed--which is one of the few surviving beds from the ancient world. I think that all 5 images above were quality images. With kind Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:12, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure. Let me know if you need anything else! --J.smith (talk) 05:17, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In confidence

[edit]

Merry Christmas, Sir

[edit]
Hi! I am 56 and I know pain and suffering/life's trials amid my vision and wisdom, which I shared here and with Wikipedia English. I am deeply sad to state, that just because 3 co-Filipino Editor, co-Ateneo de Manila University alumni schoolmates (2 and one Filipino Wikipedians who accused me of harassment - Psalm 109 prophecy of curse, when he submitted evidence of IP address anonymous posting to mislead editors, while he was in Mubai, as I cursed that place where I also bi-located), conspired, I was indefinitely blocked on Wikipedia English; and my July, 2007 - November 22, 2008 works there were painfully removed, leaving of course only the history tabs.
These 2 and 1 Filipino admin.editors are so powerful and have had the numbers to put me down. I admit that I had to defend myself against their defamation-libel and stalking by filing first verbal school case and would later file civil and criminal lawsuits against these 3 co-Filipinos, which suits are protected by Wikipedia rules. Thus, they even went here to ask to delete my own pictures but they said they lost. So, I stopped contributing here and there. Ordinarily, Commons is not the place to upload one's pictures, since this will not benefit this noble project. But if I, who had been Googled as celebrity in the law and parapsychology department, among other, submit my own pictures, as celebrity, they are Commons treasures.
I don't know if you and have time, or can help me be unblocked there, amid the very deep anger, hatred and vendetta by these 3 Filipinos. I admit that as gifted, irrespective of creed and religion or no religion, I had impeccably prophesied the pains they and others suffered, inclding this dire
26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks, where this 3 accused me of even putting the IP address at Mumbai, in violation of no personal info in Wiki. But, at your young age with dreams and vision, I am sure that you have ways to discern the truth, if my vision is for Commons and Wikipedia. Merry Christmas to you, to Commons anto your family/country.[5]If you can help me obtain justice or be unblocked, may I please ask your kind help.[6][7] Since, my Wiki talk and user page were blanked and I could not reply, you can reply here please or in my judgefloro@yahoo.com. Cheers.[8]--Judgefloro (talk) 07:05, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Judge. I don't believe I can help you with the issues you have faced over on Wikipedia. I'm sorry. Frankly, I'm not sure that that project was the best fit for you anyway.
However, if you wish to contribute positively to this project I can lend a hand. The free content movement needs you. --J.smith (talk) 07:18, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since 1965, my only ambition was to be a Nikon Photographer. Yeah, it is still my passion today (even if in 1972, my dream was to be a horse jockey; but I landed in - being a lawyer, then judge, then healer, then exorcist, psychic, and now a Wiki banned jobless judge in pretend world. I am gifted. I have to suffer since I have a mission. To be candid, the reason why I was blocked there is - these 2 Filipino admin-editor who are extremely wealthy and powerful with the Mumbai-Bombai (who challenged my having revealed his alleged vacation address) editor were affected by my prophecies.
The Obama twin ass. attempts ... the November 26-27 Mumbai attacks-Our Lady of Miraculous Medal feast today amid the 1918 Fatima prophecies ... I shared/share with Wikipedia English; my tons of dire warnings of global disasters, Philippine pains, made deep wounds thereat. Yes, you are just one. But the result is not which matters. It is the attempt to unveil the truth, which is the light. I ask you to take a second look, by reading in your past time the beloved shares of wisdom I found, called KINDNESS, from RUSH forum.[9]It is impossible for me to contribute here, with tons of Wiki English enemies. In fact some administrators asked all my pictures here deleted but failed. I am a lawyer-judge and you, a very young photographer. We are one, since our passion is photography. MAY I ASK you this: if you have authentic psychic or gifted detectors or professionals in your place (say psychic crime detectors you had seen in Discovery Channel) please show any of my pictures here and ask who am I? Just that.
Thereafter, if you please, ponder, take a second look, even if you fail, to re-open my case. ANI, etc. there is no need to attempt to convince admins. I affirm, that after you fail, a greater Mumbai will be forthcoming, worst than the 2 Obama attempts. This is my lasting proof that I can, yes I can, more than Obama can.
Please take a closer look at my Wiki English contributions: essentially, my agenda was to add and edit in articles, to predict dire events, by cryptology insertions. Mumbai is just a feather on my cap of prophecy, revealed in Fatima 191. This inserted prediction here, will be the lasting legacy of my dire prediction in Wikipedia. Remember that I was banned for only one reason: uploading or editing the IP address of Max who passed Mumbai-Bombai and the plane crash and plane collision in Plaridel Bulacan. Parenthetically, you may not discern that I was banned, due to my ungodly reprisals or predictions akin to or copy paste of the 1918 Fatima prophecy, which are the proximate hidden causes of my blocking. You, will, later on, have signs, why I am a prophet. Sincerely, Judge Florentino V. Floro, Jr. IN TIME, I might consider taking some pictures, but ... --Judgefloro (talk) 10:07, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please explain more fully...

[edit]

Regarding Image:First 20 Guantanamo captives.jpg... could you please explain more fully why you ordered the replacement of one image by another == as exact duplicates -- when they were not exact duplicates? Geo Swan (talk) 01:33, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The only difference (that I could see) between those two photos was that Image:First 20 Guantanamo captives.jpg was a lower resolution version. I can undelete it if you want, but I don't see much need in keeping both? --J.smith (talk) 01:40, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've explained why I think it is important to keep these related images, in detail, elsewhere. Geo Swan (talk) 02:30, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any reason to bypass the built-in image resizer? I can see why you might, if it's not giving you the results you want. Is that the case? --J.smith (talk) 02:42, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I asked you to restore this image. I am going to repeat that request. Please read this article.

http://www.miamiherald.com/1377/story/375017.html#/photos/v-flash_gallery/gallery/374784.xml

The article makes clear that McCoy hoisted his camera on a mono-pod, and had it take a bunch of pictures. I told you I did not believe the two images were "exact duplicates".
The article says the images were "iconic". I believe this is true, and argues for keeping each distinct version. Please restore this image. Geo Swan (talk) 16:02, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
People, in-motion, are in the exact same place. The people walking at the camera, the person on the right walking away from the camera, the people on the left are all in the exact same position. this picture and this picture are both downsampled from the same source picture. The one from the miamiherald has the added benefit of being higher resolution and having been downsampled using a better process. For the sake of argument, I have restored the image and will nominate it for deletion. --J.smith (talk) 16:15, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Sir. I am taking a second look at your message; I ponder to have begun: I revised my talk page here with my loved images and hard worked profile-Page at Wikipedia English. As I said, in 1965, I was and now, a frustrated photographer-dreamer. I remember our Fr. Reily, SJ, who admitted he was a failed Jet Pilot (his ambition). If you view my external links, I uploaded 300+ public photos, in Flicker, Friendster and Photobucket - my best pictures and documents since 1999. And of these bulk, I uploaded only my chosen best here in Commons. As you notice, I lately used the NIKON D70 (which camera won the best pic of 2007[10]) in some of my latest pics.[11] But some of my treasured pics of Philippine tourism sites used ordinary Kodak cameras, since, it never crossed my mind that I will be uploading here.

As you know, I worked hard from July 2007 to November 22, 2008, with 6,747 edits in Wik. English until I lost the fight versus 2 Filipino editors and another (yes, of 2 millon editors)[Note that a Filipino administrator had more than 80 Rfa voters]. You may deeply understand, that if again, I work hard here, and suddenly, these stalkers would gun at me, how will I then, contribute unperturbed. At any rate, when I find a nice place in Philippines, or document, I will share it with you here. I will begin. And I will try to create an account in Wiki News.
Question: I am new here: is there adoption, and if there is, can you adopt me, so that if I make mistakes, I would not be blocked but just corrected by deletion of wrong pics? Thanks. Cheers and happy holidays.--Judgefloro (talk) 07:21, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We don't have an adoption program - nothing so formal as that. This project is much more laid back then many others. But, if you ever have a question I'm here for you! --J.smith (talk) 07:43, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I value this Wiki project so much, since, unlike Flickr, Photobucket and Friendster, this is state-of-the-art. Like in law, this is jurisprudence, while the other 3 are mere blogs. Specifically, I admire the details like meta data and minute descriptions of the uploaded photo. However, there many strict rules here, which are terrify me. I was blocked here for 3 weeks, since I committed mistakes on copy vio, etc. But some of my uploaded photos that were deleted (like the coconut oils) were really taken by me. Unlike in Courts, however, it is hard to appeal here.
Before (maybe) I will continue to contribute here, may I, if you would please, ask you this question, as you are administrator here: first, my Wiki English User Page was developed and well-received, slowly, with outside editing, until I was blocked. But before I was blocked, my adopter User:Diligent Terrier approved it[12] against attacks by my 3 blocking enemies, and some editors even said it is nice (since it original and the links are my own). However, after I was blocked just because of these 2 Filipino editors and 1 undisclosed user (Mumbai), I could not defend my User Page against swarm of attacks in the ANI (For instance, my rusty vintage rifle image which is my own treasure (1953) - and other Commons images, which allegedly portrayed my eloquent but sarcastic prophecy of blocking by these 3, with Wikified words like stalking, predator, etc.). I consider these as poetry. ERGO, my question, sir, is: will I again suffer here, the blanking of my Commons User Page, if these 3 Filipino editors, who are monitoring my posts here, as I viewed in the Wiki English links, would file here, a complaint to block or blank my userpage? Sorry for this too long discussion. Regards.--Judgefloro (talk) 10:17, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I do not have a crystal ball. On ANI a few people wanted to block you "for your own good". They argued that by letting you stay we would be taking advantage of a person with a mental illness. Me and several others said that was ridiculous.
I can't speak for anyone other then my self, but I think I can predict behavior to some degree. I think if you were to focus on uploading pictures of dwarfs, (images like Image:Judgefloro candle DSC 4584.jpg or images outside of our project scope (such as Image:Judgefloro March1 1996.jpg , then people those who wanted you blocked would gain a louder voice. If you continue pictures that fit within our project scope then I think it is likely that you will be left alone. J.smith (talk) 17:24, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr image

[edit]

Dear JSmith, I notice there are 89 images waiting for flickr review and don't know if there is a pproblem here. I wonder: would it be possible for you to review this fine image:

of pharaoh Hatshepsut's expedition to the Land of Punt. Please help. He is a new contact and I have to thank him soon for using this specific image. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:41, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yeah, it looks great. Marked. --J.smith (talk) 21:51, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a minor detail, but I don't think the "editor" parameter to {{RetouchedPicture}} is meant for the software used — apparently, you're supposed to put your username there. As it is, you have images like Alberg pano - restitch.jpg linking to User:CS3, which is probably not what you intended. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 17:54, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Valid point and so corrected. I uploaded the picture via the derivativeFX form and it isn't very clear what that field is for. Oh well, live and learn. --J.smith (talk) 17:59, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did I do something wrong?

[edit]

Dear J smith,

  • Did I do something wrong with this image. It is licensed as 'cc by sa 2.0' and I uploaded it with this license but the flickr review bot said I made an error: File:KV23 by Mutnedjmet.jpg I made a few anon IP edits after flickr review passed the image (pls check the image history) but only to the image description--not the license itself. Strange, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:19, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, you did everything fine. The bot just didn't reconise the tag for some reason. I fixed the tagging of that image. --J.smith (talk) 14:40, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your re-inspection. I thought the flickrbot process was errorfree. But a Human Admin review is always preferable just to remove any doubt. With kind Regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:21, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ilya Siomkin

[edit]

I have the all rights to all images in category [Siomkin], they have been transferred me personally by the author - Ilya Siomkin. He is the legendary Russian songwriter and my good friend. At wikipedia there is no way freeware that I have chosen it. About it it is written in the text. It is not my problem that you are not able to read in Russian. ) --AGGreSSor (talk) 21:45, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please have Ilya Siomkin send a letter of permission to the Commons:OTRS team. Also, please don't come to my talk page and treat me like shit. J.smith (talk) 21:53, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ilja Syomkin is not able to use the computer. How you think why I here? Where in wikipedia rules it is told that Schekspir should was to send the permission to command OTRS? I live to Russia, St.-Petersburg, my name is Eugene Sobolev. Where to you to send scan of passports? --AGGreSSor (talk) 22:05, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments on COM:QIC

[edit]

Hi,

thanks for your votes and your comments about my nominations on QIC.

As for the elephant trunk, the ISO 500 was necessary, 1/60th with a 50mm lens is about as much as I can hold (I need to train more to keep a more steady hand :). I've got the RAW image, if you want to give it a try (my noise reduction skills are basically non-existant) ...

As for the berries, you're right - as the subject won't run away (it's in the local botanical garden), I'll try again with a more diffused flash - thanks for the hint.

As for the passion fruit - thanks - I was surprised we didn't have a high-quality passion fruit image on Commons yet (the others were either small, out of focus, or both).

Cheers, --AlexanderKlink (talk) 21:13, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm new to the hobby too. I too am finding there are always tons of factors to balance. On my camera's lenses it has an option for vibration reduction. I don't know how it works with the A700, but from what I understand it has a build-in image stabilization system. You might be able to get away with having a lower ISO and a longer shutter speed. Personally, I set my ISO to 100 manually and and only increase it if I can't do anything else.
I've tried a few different things to diffuse flash. I think a bit of tissue paper would work - but I have not tried it yet. A paper towel did quite nice for some macro pictures I took.
It's a great feeling to fill a niche with a great picture.  :) J.smith (talk) 21:36, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It does have a built-in image stabilizer, and that helps a little, but still I rely on the 1/focal length rule of thumb to be sure ... I normally set my ISO to 200 (as ISO 100 on the Sony apparently processes the image rather than being the lowest "natural" setting) and increase it if needed, as well.
I've recently bought one of those reflector sets which also has a semi-transparent part, I'll try it for the berries, I think it will probably work quite well. As for the macro pictures, I've built the 10$ DIY-Macro studio from Strobist, I can highly recommend that (the passion fruit was taken using it, for example).
Cheers, --AlexanderKlink (talk) 15:10, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ohhh interesting. I'm all about the DYI solutions. I got a 12$ florescent light bar this weekend. It has great diffused light without even using a diffuser. I already have a UV filter, so I'm set. J.smith (talk) 19:00, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2 images

[edit]

Dear J. smith, There seems to be a backlog of 190+ new flickr images here I notice flickr review hasn't marked any images since December 14. If these 2 images aren't marked when you receive this message, could you kindly inspect them?

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - all of them have been reviewed and marked. Don't forget to upload the highest res version from flicker! J.smith (talk) 16:37, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for your help. I hope the flickrbot starts up and that Bryan knows about the situation. Then I won't have to ask for your help. It hasn't marked images for 5 straight days now. Incredible. Can you help inspect these images

[edit]

Dear J.smith, Can you kindly help mark these 4 images? The first two are by me and the other two are good images whose flickr licences check out.

As a rule, I don't use images in articles until they have been approved. One image is that of the Roxette singer, Marie Fredrikson before she became a superstar between 1989-1991 with four No.1 hits. (I asked the guy for the cropped image of her from this original photo) I have checked the flickr backlog and it is 190+ images. Some of the (not so great) images I saw in the backlog have been there for 4-5 days. Thank You for your time and please help, --Leoboudv (talk) 11:27, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tagged and bagged. --J.smith (talk) 17:15, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! A bit overcast, but sometimes sunny today. It's been raining cats&dogs for the last few days, so today is a nice break! J.smith (talk) 21:35, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Final images

[edit]

Dear J smith, If you can help, please inspect these final images. The first is mine and is historically important. The other 2 look culturally important too:

Thank You. PS: I notice most of the images in the backlog are of low quality, out of focus or based on derivative work: posters of Obama, etc. A pity. Thank You and Merry Christmas, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:24, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas is, after all, a time to forgive any past actions, and move on from them. Again, happy holidays to you all!

Thanks for the Christmas review!

Hi J.smith. I would like to thank you for the interest you have shown in my request for adminship, and for the time you have taken to review my profile. As a Christmas present I've just been given the admin tools, for which I'm thankful as well. I have understood all the remarks that have been made during the review period. I will take them into account and begin using the tools with much care, until I gain more experience and self-confidence. Your comment: "I realy like the image... Is there any way to get the mold identified so the picture's page can be complete?"

It fits the characteristics of Fuligo septica in many ways including being dry and crusty on the outside and when you scrape the surface it is a black crumbly spore mass inside. But the surface texture and the domed shape are different. There are other slime molds that have the domed shape and look similar, but have smooth, even shiny surfaces. But I've seen a number of these ones over a number of years, so they don't seem to be particularly rare so hopefully I will track down a more specific name soon :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 01:10, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear J.smith, If you can review the copyright status of these two images I would really appreciate it:

I want to use them for the articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Victorian_bushfires and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_southeastern_Australia_heat_wave . Yesterday I sent an email to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org with the required attachments showing the author of the original charts has given me permission to use them in my images, which I am assigning to public domain. I just sent another emailwith the required URL "http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:OTRS_pending" included. This is the first time I have tried to use the OTRS system and I have found it pretty confusing. Thanks in anticipation for your help and thanks in general for working on Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Admin banner?

[edit]

Dear Justin,

  • I was wondering if you are the only Commons Admin on the west coast of North America? I notice most of the Admins here are in Europe...which is 8-9 hours ahead of you and me. After a certain hour, if I need immediate help on something, the only person I can contact is MBisanz in NY. (sorry I lost contact with you) I've spent the last 2 months painfully going through the lists of failed flickr reviewed images here and have whittled it down from c.1830 to below 1600. I also got a Featured Picture passed here: File:Praying mantis india.jpg after I contacted the flickr account owner and 8 images passed here by Matt after the license was changed to 'cc by sa.' You won't believe the number of FlickrLickr images which were "failed" by Nilfanion's flickr bot. I also helped remove 6-8 copy vios from the Flickr 'image not found category' including one just yesterday It was a serious case--an image of Gary Kasparov that someone claimed to own the copyright to was an AP photo. The photo was heavily used through Wikipedia but it had no metadata, was of low resolution and I noticed that the uploader (now long since gone) had been warned about uploading copy vios here on his talkpage.
As an aside, have you considered placing an Admin banner on your User page here so that new Commons users will know you are an Administrator. Most newbies here won't know that you an an Admin from your Commons userpage...unless they scroll to its bottom and read the text here. Well, its just a suggestion, nothing more. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:03, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure there are others, but I don't know off hand. If you log into IRC you can ask around, As for a banner... *shrug* I could, if you want. I doesn't really fit in all that well. J.smith (talk) 00:16, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Panoramific

[edit]

Just noticed you help people make panoramas from their pictures. I have software that does that too, and I would upload some 360 degree panoramas if I wasn't concerned about copyright. What are your thoughts on that, and is there a category, or any special considerations like "panorama of the month" that you know of? GabrielVelasquez (talk) 11:48, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The panorama software gains no special copyright over your photos. As far as I know, if you own the original or have permission under an open license then you should be fine. J.smith (talk) 20:25, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A recent edit to the Sacramento, California article showed a panaramic image was recently uploaded by User:Yellowboy06 found here [13]. On the page he attributes you as the author and the image as source as you original upload page for your cropped panaramic. However, the user mistakingly released his copy to public Domain. As the original cropped version was used to make the deriverative image it must still be lisenced with the same Sharealike 3.0 from your image unless you wish to release your images to public domain. None of which is necessary as I have simply placed your image linked directly from your upload page. Better to se the entire image without having to scroll back and forth to see the whole image.--Amadscientist (talk) 01:44, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was quickly fixed. I felt bad about speedily tagging, but with licensing of other works I tend to air on the side of the original photographer. Very much like your image. I feel it should be used on the Sacraamento page as it has consensus through the Wiki community to be the best of images in that catagory and whould hope editors would not take advantage of your being a good person to replace a valued image soley for the purpose of an altered increased size that makes the Sacramento a little difficult to navigate.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:16, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

[edit]

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:23, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As someone who previously participated in a past discussion regarding this page, you may be interested in the new discussion taking place. I have endeavoured to send a message to everyone previously involved; if I have missed anyone please let them know as well. Roux (talk) 05:45, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How those pictures help us to be free

[edit]

Hello my friend,

back in 2008 you said "Juan, your oppose is silly." (see: Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Rooster portrait2.jpg). And lets have a look on image itself. It is still GFDL, which means its use is limited technically. And Muhamad and other people continue to release here GFDL 2.0 only works. They will be never easily accesible.

PS: and umm, what about that beer?--Juan de Vojníkov (talk) 12:04, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

mmmm GFDL Beer!
I think it might be too late to convert the image to to CC, but it's posible some of those images under GFDL could have been converted. The wikipedia article on the GNU FDL has a discussion about the conversion from GFDL to CC that might be worth reading.
I do agree with your unease about contributes releasing photos under the GFDL. It puts a fairly significant burden on a re-user of the photo, especially in print. If I were producing a book that wasn't otherwise under the GFDL I would most likely avoid any GFDL images. However, the GFDL does offer protections that the CC does not. Namely, it gives the author the ability to restrict it's use within a document protected by DRM. --J.smith (talk) 17:34, 21 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
