There are twenty regions in Italy.The only regions listed here are in central Italy near Rome. This is a foolish way to categorize hill towns because I seriously doubt anyone will fill out the remaining 16 regions, moreover, the towns themselves are know by there province name, not region, l Borghi piu belli d'Italia, which is an authority on these things, categorized the towns by North, Central, South, and Island, a much more rational sub-categorization.

Here's a list of the regions: Abruzzo, Valle d'Aosta, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Sardegna, Sicilia,Toscana, Umbria, and Veneto. Again, not a good sub-category.

Since we had a forced merge into Hilltowns in Italy from the category Medieval and Renaissance hill town in Italy, I have transferred the description of these hill towns, as well as two images providing examples of the towns, to this page. The four subcategories are given an undeserved prominence, all being regions abutting Rome. A more helpful catergorization would be North, Central and South as used by I Borghi più belli d'Italia.
