Talk:Rectal administration

Latest comment: 1 year ago by 178.51.25.236

Rectal administration is only superior for drugs with local effect (think hemorrhoids or inflammatory bowel disease).

for drugs with a systemic function (e.g. paracetamol/acetaminophen) it is widely inferior.

Rectal administration enthousiasts always quote the 40 yo De Boer article (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6126289) as the main source, while newer research is available, widely debunking De Boers enthusiasm.

An example of time to serum peak for paracetamol (sources available on uptodate.com > paracetamol: drug information) - oral: 10-60 min - IV: median (depends on the age) 0.18-0.33h - rectal: median (depends on the age) 2.37-5.1h

So please rewrite this article using up to date sources. 178.51.25.236 (talk) 09:24, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
