Reference issue

edit

Hi there, just passing through. Saw you expressed confusion about the problem with this edit. You gave the title as:

  • |title=Slipknot Singer Joins 'Doctor Who' Cast as Alien Warlord's Roar Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/slipknot-singer-joins-doctor-who-cast-as-alien-warlords-roar-20150928#ixzz3n9OJd8F2 Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter | RollingStone on Facebook

The specific reason the bot got confused is because you included a pipe (|) in the title, which is used in templates to separate parameters, so the wiki software actually interprets this as:

  • |title=Slipknot Singer Joins 'Doctor Who' Cast as Alien Warlord's Roar Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/slipknot-singer-joins-doctor-who-cast-as-alien-warlords-roar-20150928#ixzz3n9OJd8F2 Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter
  • |1=RollingStone on Facebook (where 1 is an unnamed parameter, which {{cite web}} doesn't use)

In general, reference titles should be shorter than this. Use the title of the article rather than the title of the webpage, and avoid including URLs since these won't work—the title itself is already used as a link to the main URL. (Actually, I'm not sure where you got the Follow us: @rollingstone on Twitter... text from, since this wasn't part of the original title?) In this case, I would suggest simply:

  • |title=Slipknot Singer Joins 'Doctor Who' Cast as Alien Warlord's Roar

Templates can be very confusing, so I don't blame you for this at all; plenty of experienced users make similar errors all the time. Let me know if you have any other questions by replying below with {{reply|The Earwig}}. Thanks! — Earwig talk 00:45, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

@The Earwig: Thank you! I made the correction. Learning slowly, but surely.
