Admin Nom

edit

Hi Mattinbgn, and thanks for the nice comments on my talk page about admin-ning. At the risk of sounding a little over-eager, I'd be happy to accept a nomination once I get a GA or two under my belt. I think Nundah, Queensland is getting there, once I get my photos of the area off my camera and into the article, and I clean up some of the more listy stuff towards the end of the article, I think I'll be close. Any suggestions on other ways to improve it would be welcome, though! Lankiveil (talk) 05:42, 31 December 2007 (UTC).Reply

By the way, I've "creatively acquired" your icon idea and applied it to my own user page. I hope you don't mind! Lankiveil (talk) 05:42, 31 December 2007 (UTC).Reply

The entire article is a resolute mess... it's genuinely sad to think it was once at a standard which passed GA. The Telethon stuff is important but shouldn't be in *that* section of the article, should be under a section called "events" which of course doesn't exist. Lots of work needed at some future point. Jackson

edit

Going through for a final copy-edit, I was confused by this (re 1929-30 season): "Another scare with illness saw him hospitalised in Adelaide after Christmas and complications after an operation to remove his tonsils, arranged by the Australian Board of Control saw Jackson lose a stone (6.3 kilograms) in weight.[27]" (1) Was it the same illness? (2) Did the Board really arrange the op, considering their renown tight-fistedness?

I'll finish the c-e then I reckon you should nominate for FA. I replaced the last image with one of him cover driving to go with the copy that describes the stroke (he looks like a young Steve Waugh). Will try hard to do it in the next couple of days.

Re McCool, I have found a pic I will upload soon. The only thing I can add at the moment is Frith reckons McCool learned his cricket on the back streets of Padington and went to the same school as Trumper, then became a "recluse" (frith's word) in later life as a farmer (which means his market gardening, I s'pose). Frith can be a bit frustrating like that, he said the same about Jack Gregory becoming a recluse, but not really explaining why or how. It would be good to get some more info on McCool's early life, war service, reason for moving to QLD, his later years, family etc.

Phanto282 (talk) 13:47, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I have been frantically uploading pix recently, particularly Aus captains for the proposed feature topic. The Jackson/Kippax montage makes a nice desktop background, no? You have good support for the FAC, best wishes for it. Let me know down the track if you think its appropriate for me to support it (with a disclaimer, of course, that I did some c-e).

Thnx for the vote of confidence in the article's status - the band was known as 'The Triffids' not 'Triffids' so I guess I need to go through and make sure all references are consistent through all the articles (must of missed some). Hi. Just wanted to raise your edit on Talk:Clint Bolton, removing the WPFootballinAus banner. You're right in saying that the articles inclusion in FootballinAus is covered by the WP Australia banner. But, the player=yes parameter in WPFootballinAus includes the article in the A-League player project. It is a double-up but the WPAus doesn't have this parameter. - Tomperc (talk) 10:43, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. AfD nomination of Julian Doyle

edit

An editor has nominated Julian Doyle, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Julian Doyle and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 16:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Criteria for speedy deletion? 26th Regiment Royal Artillery Association

edit

Hi, I noticed a speedy delete you just made to this just now, and wanted to comment. My issue is not with the deletion, but wording of the template that was placed by User:Corvus cornix, in such that he refers to Non-notable organization with no claims of notability, whereas as I understand notability is not a speedy deletable criteria, the criteria referenced is actualy CSD 7A: No indication of importance/significance. Also, I can't be sure as it was deleted as I was checking, but it looked as if there was mere minutes between the article creation and the sd tag being placed, implying no effort to establish notability anyway. So, if you agree with this comment, and I could well be wrong, then could you point out to the user the difference between establishing notability and highlighting CSD 7A violation, or correct any misunderstanding on my part. MEETING

If possible theres a meeting going on in irc.freenode.net in channel #SHU about seton hall

edit

Haha I know what that's like, sounds like my watchlist sometimes when the bots come through. Basically the situation is that I've been doing articles for the old LGAs (pre-1994/amalgamation) and it turns out that about 70% of the new ones are incorrectly named, which is causing some headaches on the work I've been doing as the linking is all over the place. Ultimately this will end with rewriting nearly all of the new LGA articles in a fashion not dissimilar to the style the current WA ones are in (eg Shire of Corrigin as a random example). The situation only applies to Victoria. Orderinchaos 08:47, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

To expand, btw, the issue is that the Cities and Rural Cities were correctly named, as were Shires closer to Melbourne, but many others were named "X Shire" when their correct name is, according to all government sources, "Shire of X" - there are several exceptions which the very same documents confirm - Surf Coast Shire, Alpine Shire, Golden Plains Shire are the three that come to mind, I seem to recall there were six. Orderinchaos 08:53, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
My source was simply the Government Gazette, as well as the Shire of Moira Planning Scheme and the news release from the Department of Local Government creating the shires to begin with.[1] It's a bit of a weird one as the area has one name (Shire of Moira) - it's the parcel of land governed by the shire council, then we have the Moira Shire Council, which is the governing body. Sometimes the entity would be obtusely called the Council of the Shire of Moira (which is silly when the entity itself uses Moira Shire Council, as do the VEC). Where this gets confusing beyond belief is in NSW where under their Local Government Act an area can itself be called a council (eg Port Stephens Council). Orderinchaos 10:40, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've found an even stranger form when looking up Buloke: "The Municipal District of the Shire of Buloke". How convoluted is that? :| Orderinchaos 15:11, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: ignored !votes

edit

Sure, it's really no trouble at all, Mattinbgn. WP:AFD is the wrong process for content improvement, the correct process is WP:EDIT. There is no need to delete the page history to change the content of the page, unless it is a WP:BLP or WP:CV violation. Any editor may use the edit button without an AFD to improve the article. If the subject was notable enough for a rewritten article, then it is notable, and therefore not a candidate for deletion. So those !votes, you see, were self-contradictory, and therefore ignored. Test match

edit

I think the Bucknor-Benson dubious decisions can be merged into the Sydney Test Match article, which is pending a move to a better name (I couldn't think of anything). What that article currently has is more neutral and detailed information on the decisions than the actual article on the decisions. So I think the Bucknor-Benson article can be just deleted. I hope to expand the article into a neutral account of mainly the post-match stuff and the racism controversy. Normally Wikipedia doesn't include very detailed accounts of the actual events of the match so that part will remain limited. Darrowen (talk) 00:39, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Surely there's a better title to be found... Darrowen (talk) 00:54, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Also, I think the description of the match needs to be changed and made a bit more neater. I was thinking of writing a few lines on each session of each day, which is why I had previously split the Progress of Play section into a header for each day. Hi can i ask if your ok....why should this page be deleted, so what if my name has Thuringowa in it, i know of a lot of other editors on here with the name on the city they live in with-in their name, and what is this crap about it being thinly disguised campaign material...the page was started back in July 07 before any talks about a new super council or the city be merged with Townsville, Plus another editor came and thanked me for starting the page as it was next on his list. So what if Thuringowa as a city will be no more after March, Les will still be here as a person, Just like Tony Mooney and i see that his page is still ok to have and Tony is the same as Les only Les is a better mayor (he can run a city without getting it into $1.1mil of debt) so not just you but all of your friends on here that are having a pick on Thuringowa week need to lay off a bit and do some real editing.thanks Thuringowacityrep (talk) 08:10, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Symonds compared to Clown and Predator

edit

There are several references of Symonds being compared to clown (apart from the one in the artical) much older than this current incident including one by Geoffery Boycott http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/england/6169975.stm . It needs to be mentioned that those comparisons have never drawn so much attention or considered controvertial.

here is a reference from BBC sport from 14 December 2006 much before these events.

"He's not convinced me as a Test player yet," says Geoff Boycott of Andrew Symonds, seconds before the clown lookalike launches Monty Panesar not once, but twice, deep into the Waca crowd. 66.245.9.34 (talk) 08:28, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Lucky? Collins

edit

Added ref as per request at wt:cric. If you read the ref cited, you will see that Collins was destitute by 1931 and he had to apply for financial aid from the NSW Cricketers' Fund because he had no money for food. This continued until 1938. Not so lucky....

Phanto282 (talk) 00:33, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Would recommend buying a copy of Harte (new ed published in 2003 with additional stuff by Bernard Whimpress that didn’t really add anything of substance) as it covers all of this tricky stuff & you can go back to it again and again; it has errors but it’s a brilliant ref book as is Frith & Haigh’s new one, Inside Story. I use both, but I have no time for Roland Perry’s works: boring writer, poor researcher. Re Collins, I reckon the incident at The Oval in 1926 needs extensive coverage. It is curious as his tactics for the match were strange and when he got home, the NSWCA sacked him as capt, as did Waverley. As far as I can tell, an unprecedented occurrence in Aus cricket. Collins then took the hint and retired, so technically he wasn’t sacked as Aus capt. Remember what Armstrong said about betting on cricket to Lord Harris in 1921? This is an interesting ref: [2] (chapter2).

Collins-Gregory stand

edit

The innings included a partnership of 119 in 89 minutes with Gregory, destroying the South African bowling.[6] - The stand was 209. 85 minutes seems to be the most commonly credited time (though you can see a 97 here). According to http://www.sportstats.com.au/thousandball.html , it is the fastest ever 200 stand, and someone (Roisterer or Phanto) may have the relevant edition of The Cricket Statistician to cite. edit

Hi there. I've just gone and rattled off some batting graphs for all of the Australian captains. Please do check to see if I have missed anything or made some glaring errors or typos in the title etc. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:50, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

NSW South Coast

edit

Replied at Talk:South Coast, New South Wales so others could join in .

On disambiguation with commas or brackets, I think the question needs to be resolved Australia wide. Probably brackets like rivers. If you look at the other NSW regions in Category:Regions of New South Wales - most are dabbed with a comma, two with brackets. Category:Regions of Western Australia shows consistent use of brackets. The one Vic region needing dabbing uses brackets. South Australia uses commas ... Regards --Matilda talk 04:15, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Blanking of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Corey Delaney

edit

Please unblank Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Corey Delaney. The page has been linked to in mainstream media, so protection is warrented, but blanking is not. Please unblank this page to allow context to be given to the news.com.au article. Fosnez (talk) 07:13, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I second that. Why did you blank it? Courtesy? Who's courtesy? Who requested it? News media are linked to it all over the world and you blank it? Doesn't seem right. ALLSTARecho 07:18, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. we really need a lovejoy barnstar for the way you are being quoted in [3] And then thinking you could become anonymous by not singing you comments Gnangarra 10:58, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was gonna say this on my talk (but forgot!). Despite you being a Lovejoy (which we need, it seems :P), your comments there actually made the project look reputable. I just swore, abused a popular Australian TV show, complained about not getting an invite, and had my name misquoted. You should be proud :D Dihydrogen Monoxide (party) 12:56, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ricky Ponting

edit

Mattinbgn, thank you for your message concerning my edit to the "controversies" section of the "Ricky Ponting" article. You have suggested that my edit is, in your words, "way over the top" and "most of it doesn't even relate to Ponting". I disagree. Viewed objectively it gives accurate context and balance to the relevant controversy. And if you read the references to which my edit refers, you will see that each and every one of them refers to Ricky Ponting. By my edit I have added balance and accuracy to the text which preceded it. I have read the Wikipedia policy concerning UNDUE WEIGHT and note that it provides inter alia that "the article should fairly represent all significant viewpoints that have been published". By deleting my edit it appears that you are seeking to ensure that the "Ricky Ponting" article does not do so. Moreover, by deleting my edit you are reinstating: (1) a form of text that suggests that Ponting's conduct, and that of the Australian cricket team, was the focus of a single controversy surrounding the relevant match; (2) text which states that "many publications" called for Ponting to be sacked when in truth only one article, written by one commentator, Peter Roebuck, and published in related newspapers (The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald) did so; and (3) text which omits any reference to relevant articles expressing the contrary point of view such as that written by Malcolm Conn to which I have referred. With respect your stated rationale for removing my edit is without foundation. Accordingly, I shall reinstate it. Quantummeruit (talk) 11:14, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks mate, I'll see if I can manage to improve the article to the Wiki standards. I'm not sure if the situation will go awry. But you're welcome to nominate it for deletion; while I can get the article up to scratch. Thanks.

Les Again

edit

All I ask is that if you think that something is a issue, how about coming and talking to me about it on my talk page (that's what the talk page is for), I looked over a few other pages, some from Aus and some from the US before I wrote the page this time and I seen that a lot of them had a small list of what the person had done for the area, or if it was a doctor some pages had a small list of things that they had been awarded for and this is a small sourced list that can be found with out looking to hard about some of the awards he has been given. So again I can not see how I can be a COI when I use info that is refed and is from reliable source's...if you feel that the list has something in it that may be wrong ..let me know on my talk page and we can work it out, ok how about we give that a go hey. Thuringowacityrep (talk) 12:41, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, it is a list of what he and the council have achieved, and you even seen that I put Les and his council and I can not see how this is an endorsement this is your POV and it is really unfair that you keep going on like this, I asked that we use the talk page so that I can find out what it is that you feel should not be in that list, and them I can remove it, in an effort to keep you happy. but no you can't do that simple request that I ask for can you, wiki is not about you POV or Mine and as I said I didn't just add the list without looking on other pages to see how those pages where written, and this is how I came to add the list. I will go thought it again seeing how you don't want to have any positive input and I will only add that awards that where given to him, you will also see that I have gone in and added Tyrell after his first name, but I have to ask are you for real.... you say that the article discusses Tyrell in a familiar tone, how? it is worded the same sort of way as the Dan Gleeson and the Tony Mooney page's, I think that because I have said that I now the Mayor that you feel it has been written like that, I hate to spoil it for you but yes I do know the mayor, but not in the way you all seem to think and I will tell you know how I know him, I met him when I had to see him about holding a music event here in Thuringowa and met him a few time's after that meeting just to follow up on a few things, I then met him again when I was hired to spread soil with a Bobcat and he had a small BBQ after and I was asked to stay after the job for a meal and I did, we talked (as you do at a BBQ) and that is IT OK, so have you got it yet ...we are not best friends, pals, buddies or what ever else you people want to say, we just know each other, so DROP IT PLEASE. and the next thing, give it up about the sock-puppetry crap I have said what happened and yes ok maybe I should never had said anything to him but it is over now and I don't want to hear about again.
All my ref's are reliable sources and as I have been told many times that not every reference has to be independent but you must have other sources to back it up and I feel that I have done this. I have a talk page and it is there to be used so if I have added something that in you POV is wrong ..lets talk about it as I am very easy to get along with if people come and talk to me about the issue and not just delete it. Thanks again Thuringowacityrep (talk) 05:47, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

re:Sheep stubs

edit

I forget where it's located, but it's likely to be at WikiProject Agriculture. It may not even be a guideline. But it's what the Project members have always done with sheep breed stubs. I first encountered the custom when I revamped Herdwick, which is also a name unlikely to need disambiguation from another article. It was moved to Herdwick (sheep). I came to realize this is sound policy, because the names for sheep breeds do not make it clear that they are Ovis aries. A Peppin Merino could be anything, from a car to a brand of cracker. But Peppin Merino (sheep) is very clearly about a type of sheep. If you really dislike it, I'm happy to discuss. But that type of move has been carried out at literally every sheep breed stub, so Peppin Merino would be the only one that isn't like that. VanTucky 20:21, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for looking at John Cobb (Australian politician) so promptly. If you had any thoughts what it would need to go from 'start' to 'B' or GA, let me know. Cheers hamiltonstone (talk) 09:35, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
