The Novels WikiProject Newsletter

Hi, just wondering if you know whats happening with the monthly newsletter as nothing new has came out for 2 months now. If the editor has lost interest let me know as i could take it over if you wish. I contribute often to the tipline. Boylo (talk) 07:55, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I have left Feydey a message about it so await his response. Things do look inactive as i noticed Kevin Lewis hasn't been around for awhile. Looks like its a case of burnout. Will let you know what happens. Boylo (talk) 10:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Well i still have not got any response about it from Feydey and it shows him as being online and making contributions since i left the message, so i can only take it that he no longer is interested. Now that its the start of the new month it be good if a newsletter was put out, since its coming up to 3 months since anything was published. Since your the Leader i ask your permission for me to take over as Newsletter Editor and start publishing again. I do have some ideas on how to improve and expand it also, as i believe it can be improved upon so it becomes more informative and interesting. We really need to keep this newsletter going so that our team of editors know what is happening and have something to view each month. I did send you a email but had no response. Anyway let us know as soon as possible if i should take over and get things moving again. Regards Boylo (talk) 02:22, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Just letting you know i have asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council for assistance since all our support staff have resigned or become inactive. I did see the same thing happen with Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian literature when the Founder suddenly left after a few weeks of starting the Project, which then caused it to be classed as inactive, but that now has a small amount of activity again. Maybe the Council can make some suggestions on how to revitalize the Project as you seem to have become the Leader of the Project without any support staff. Boylo (talk) 04:08, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Thats a good idea the Wikipedia:WikiProject Films has and we should do the same. I will start on the newsletter, it will take me a few days to organize it. I will mention in it about doing a roll call and also mention the Job Vacancies and try to fill those. As far as getting committee members i suspect we will have to hold elections for those positions, so need to mention that too. So looks like we have a fair amount just in doing all this, but once done then things should roll along much better. I also suggest you forward to me by email a introduction article for yourself that i can add to the newsletter so our members can get to know you, as that will help, just something small like maybe 120 words or so, it would also be good if you could do that each month, so let me know if you like that idea. I will mention the roll call and job vacanies etc in another part of newsletter, so no need to mention that too much. If any you have any other ideas, let me know. Boylo (talk) 02:05, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Maria i been working hard on the newsletter to try and get it completed and am just about finished and shall have it distributed out. I think that we should leave the elections for co-ordinators for next month since we will have our plate full filling job vacancies and checking the inactive list. So maybe best that you write your introduction for next month and speak about the elections then. I will mention this in the newsletter. Boylo (talk) 09:37, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Have been doing some more work on the Newsletter today and hopefully complete it tomorrow and will ask around for someone who has a bot to distrubute it. As the Newsletter only goes to subscribers we will need to send out that Roll call and Coordinator nominations message separately to all members, but i will mention it in the newsletter. As far as having the "Project news" section to help advertise peer reviews, assessments, etc., some members will need to fill those roles to include that information in future newsletters. Actually 'Peer Review and Assessments' seems very quiet with few posts in the last year, so thats the type of thing you should mention in your message for next month, since the newsletter is meant to inform and encourage editors. I will mention the Job Vacanies to try and fill some of those roles so that next month we will have more assistance, as from looking at the list of roles, nearly all are vacant, which shows we have lost much member interest. At least now we are working our way back. Thats all i can think of at the moment. Boylo (talk) 12:39, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
If you wish to introduce yourself for this newsletter, let me know, as the space is available, and i can put it in the right column above my section. I have wrote something in the editorial but as its late here i need to reword it, but shall do that tomorrow. Usually that section had the same written each month which i found dull. I want to try and make the newsletter fresh and interesting with more information each month. Shall speak to you tomorrow. Boylo (talk) 13:14, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Am just about to head off, so will take your advice and re-edit the newsletter tomorrow. Regards. Boylo (talk) 13:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Newsletter is completed, i just need to check the wording and links tomorrow, then i will look for someone to distribute it. I decided to keep the Collaboration section as thats always been a feature, i think it has became inactive due to no newsletter mentioning it for 3 months, as i always use to work on them after the newsletter came out and mentioned one. So have a look and let me know what you think. Then we have the Election and Roll Call notice to work on. Boylo (talk) 09:18, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes that notice looks good. We do actually have that yearly, so it says on the members list This is a list of Wikipedians who are currently committed to the project; it will be updated yearly., so you may wish to reword that part. Probably best to find out which bot sent the Film notice out, as seems newsletter and notice bots work differently. Boylo (talk) 01:20, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Have placed the newsletter with a bot and will see if it goes thru okay now. I had to make a special page for subscribers as we have only 2 active members so couldnt use the members list, also that old list of those who wished a special newsletter format i am unable to do (not sure how he did that). Btw do you realize with that new active members list you will lose all the join dates, not sure if that matters to you, but Kevin kept that listed with name. Boylo (talk) 13:53, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes we have had to make some adjustments, so i understand removing those join dates. I hope the members like the new format of delivery of newsletter. From looking at others it seems it becomes a drop down menu type newsletter, have a look at bottom of User talk:Alakazam for an example. I think that actually solves all the different format problems and also does not take up too much space on talk page. If anyone outside our Task Force wishes newsletter they will need to add name to Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Newsletter subscribers, but i will mention that eventually on Outreach page. Its all kind of confusing doing this without any advice from previous newsletter editors, took me awhile to amend the subscribers list without all those other details etc. Anyway its done now, will be easier next month i hope :) Regards Boylo (talk) 14:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
The newsletter is still sitting waiting in the Pending list at the bot, but seems the person is busy so not sure when it will be sent out, so all we can do is wait. Boylo (talk) 13:05, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Have transferred newsletter to another bot that states they are usually sent within 12 hours. So shall see how that one goes. I noticed Kevin was contributing again, but maybe just semi active, best we continue on regardless. Boylo (talk) 02:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Transferred newsletter once again as that bot is inactive also. I did make many enquires for assistance and someone finally posted a bot i could use, so have my fingers crossed this time. I never realized it be such a problem just to get it delivered. Boylo (talk) 03:06, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Can you offer any more specific feedback as to your objections to the quality of the prose? I would like to see the article promoted and need something more specific than "not brilliant enough" and the like to figure out what I need to do. Thanks. Otto4711 (talk) 00:46, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Bobby Driscoll

Hello. Thanks a lot for your precious advices. I will definitely go through each of your items/paragraphs to get the article on Bobby into a shape to meet the requirements of at least a GA-rating.

I briefly browsed your profile on your talk page and found that one branch of your anchestors are Germans. I am German too, and that's why my prose is a bit different than your are certainly familiar with. Although written with the editing (proofreading) help from a befriended writer from Minnesota (the one who wrote the biographic essay on my Tribute website for Bobby), the basis of this article is mine. But (unfornutaly) my old friend is more a poet than a jounalist and thus, tending to write rather narrative and admiring than factual. That's why you still can find so many "finally"s and other "peackocks" within the text. I was in a real difficult situation, getting the current version through against his enthusiastic but often disturbing meddling. He's a fan of Bobby since his own early teens and even tried to meet him personally in the mid-1950s. So I can't really accuse him for his different oppinions and attitudes, concerning particular text passages, formed in more than half a century. Howsoever, he was and still is a great help and assistance in my research for Bobby. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bylot (talkcontribs) 20:10, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello Maria (I hope this not too personal),
Can I add a Hold-on-tag under my request for a GA-rating myself, giving me more time to completely edit the article on Bobby appropriate to your suggestions/advices etc., or is this only reserved to "external" reviewers? Or perhaps you could do that - as a/the first reviewer.
All my best. Oliver --Bylot (talk) 06:28, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Hello Maria,
I decided to withdraw the article on Bobby to get me the time to revise it properly. The most difficult part of this work, I reckon, will certainly be formatting the references/links according to the requirements. But I don't think that I will take more than two weeks altogether. I'm presently about to rewrite the entire text chapter by chapter, also taking this opportunity to conform it with meanwhile newly uncovered facts against my old friend's long-time image of Bobby's "story" (of course with the appropriate references, which, if need be, I'm going to create on my Tribute website on Bobby). I will also peruse my material on Bobby for "private" stuff that is suitable for an encyclopedic article without violating some people's privacy too much (I'm certain, you know what I mean). The "confusing" literature, you referred to in your first comment on my talk page and which I used for the article in general, of course, was actually meant as a kind of "Further Reading" - I now added this term to the section's title in addition to a biographjy on Hans Conried, who played and voiced Captain Hook in PETER PAN, 1953 and which I received a few days ago only. In a later step I will link the appropriate text passages directly to the book titles etc. Then I will suggest it to a review first, as you advised, before putting it on the GA-nomination page again. I hope I'm on the right way, now. Best wishes - and also greetings from KNUT :-) Oliver --Bylot (talk) 21:51, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Hello Maria,
I followed your advice and re-linked the press material in my article on Bobby Driscoll according to the templates. But I first did that on my user page (Sandbox) User:Bylot/Bobby Driscoll. I would highly appriciate it, if you could check it, wether I used the correct templates. If they're correct I can replace the present text by the re-linked one. Tomorrow I will re-link the websites etc.
Best wishes--Bylot (talk) 20:42, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Hello Maria,
I hope the links are correct now. Yet, I have two redlinks (years) in it, because in both these cases I only know/have the year and the month, but the system requires the complete date to be linked properly.
I'm pesently about compiling some more information on Bobby that isn't suitable to show him up, just to satisfy the readers curiosity. I plan to expand the file passage by one or two more examples, a personal profile through the years (hobbes, affections, interests etc.), the "first famous ... then infamous" - paragraph from my German version of this article (translated and condensed) and to mention a second "last movie" ("The Teenage Story", 1957) which I can verify by an appropriate press snippet, stating that he was already cast for this movie prior to "The Party Crashers", but had to be replaced by Mark Damon. Above all I can prove by some unkown facts (i.a. by a press reference) that they in fact started to prepare him in 1950 already for a possible post-Disney career, quite after Treasure Island, apparently aware that his child actor career will be over anytime, in contrary to the common oppinion, that the (still young) Telvision was rather a kind of refuge/asylum to him after being dropped by the Disney Studios. I think I will/can be ready in about one week to dare a first request for a peer-review. Best regards (and grettings from KNUT and FLAKE)--Bylot (talk) 17:47, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Crown (dentistry)

Yeah, I think that was a case of bad timing :) I've added some further comments to the review page, but concur with your quick fail, so I will remove the article from the nomination page. Dana boomer (talk) 19:41, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Podcast

Thanks heaps for recording the podcast last week on a wide range of copy editing / content issues. Awadewit dropped a note on my talk page letting me know that it was 'good to go' - and as I said at WP:AN, I feel smarter already, and I've only heard it once! It's now online at 'NotTheWikipediaWeekly', and hopefully it's only the first in a series!

Bobby Driscoll - Fair-Use problems with images

Hello Maria,

I currently have to delve into the requirements, some Wikipedians came up with, concerning the "boilerplate Fair Use Rationale template for historic images" I used for the images (except the head-shot in the info-box) I've uploaded for my article on Bobby Driscoll and which is now subject of a general discussion. The wording and general tone of the discussion imputes users to use it i.a. by dishonest motives. ...it seems to be very badly misused." - "We don't need uploaders to bureaucratically check off a list of formal requirements ...", "In fact, checking on a handful of image pages where it has been used, I cannot find a single one where it has been used correctly. None of these images even remotely matches what the template claims." etc. But all images I've embedded had been reviewed by another Wikipedian and considered worth to keep uploaded, due to their obvious film historic significance. I had similar problem with my German version of Bobby's article, - why it has to go completely without any image now. Depending on what the(ir) decision wll be (to consider the images for deletion or not) I will continue with trying to improve the article (to a GA-rating), as announced, or leave it at a good B-article. I am a writer and researcher and not a programmer or technican and in this respect was gald to have found the mentioned template - or what are templates actually for if not to be used in the appropriate way. It's ridiculous, how some hardliners behave in this concern but that seems to be one of the natures of a bureaucratic system such as the Wikipedia has meanwhile developed to. All images I've uploaded are commercially negligible, reduced to a low resolution and only illustrating the appropriate text passeges. But in the Wikipedia anything has to be perpetually free for unlimited distribution, modification and application by all users in all media. But that's a bit naive, isn't it? - in a world of pure commerce, in which the least use of whatever stuff without a specific permission (even if not longer possible to successfully track down and/or to obtain) is immediately considered an infringemet. One of the three items in the questionaire is: Why you believe it is indispensible for understanding the article and why it cannot be covered by text alone instead. Coincidence or aim? - since according to that practically any additional material within an article can be considered dispensible. My intention was, in addition to my Tribute website, to create another reliable and up-to-date online source on Bobby (but no detailed biography which can unabridged be used for commercial purpose - I'm no literary masochist), illustrated by some vinatge photographs, which, as said, are commercially irrelevant (msot of them I bought from eBay and similar online-sellers), knowing that anything displayed and submitted here is definitely free for any use. But that surely is asking too much. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I understand it this way. So I'll wait and see - and decide then how to proceed.

Thanks a lot for your precious assistance and advices. Best wishes--Bylot (talk) 18:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

WP:NOVELS

Mess, is way too strong. It's not as I left it but some of you have been doing stirling work! I will look in the WPFilm thing, but knowing a bit about how people seems to treat WP:Novels I so far can't see anything like the desired effect being reached. However 10 out of 10 for trying everyone! As for me I will do what I can, but it just can't be how it was, things change! Don't the just!

If you have anything particular you want assistance with just ask, I will try. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:40, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, they appear more populous and to some exent a bit more commited to the task as a whole. I'm still less than convinced of the approach, anyway if it fails we can think about a remerge later. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:45, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok, let's see how it goes. I'll see if I can get me BOT working again from one of my PCs and help out with AWB on some things! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:51, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Novels Roll Call

WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!

Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! María (habla conmigo) 14:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Job Centre

Maria i been looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/JobCentre and notice a editor has added his name to 4 vacancies, 3 of which are Coordinator for various task forces. I just wonder if this is the correct way of actually getting a editor to head and manage a task force ? I did remove 2 names, one had not contributed for 3 months and another had only ever done one post on Wikipedia and that was to take a vacancy as a task force Coordinator, so removed those names. Maybe these positions should be taken by someone who is elected by that task force rather than just having anyone add their name ? It does have on the page :

  • Please note: it confers no special levels of authority.
  • Please feel free to add your name to this table if you would like to join in helping.

Maybe this needs looking into reviewing at some stage as to me these are important jobs for each task force and do have some responsibilty to do them. Boylo (talk) 05:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Maybe best then to wait till you get the extra Coordinator's and then work it out. Boylo (talk) 00:51, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

date linking

What exactly are the disadvantages of date linking meant to be? Also, what is wrong with linking years? Are years and dates never to be linked? john k (talk) 16:53, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Beyond that, I see two statements in the same MOS article, one of which you say is "policy" and the other not even a guideline. Can you provide some support for this contention? The part that appears to be merely an essay is, in fact, the part about why we should not ever link dates. Reading that article, all the disadvantages appear to arise out of the autoformatting, which I don't even care about - I just think it's useful to link dates, especially the years, which are useful in providing context. But whatever. john k (talk) 16:58, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I suppose. I think I'm mostly just being a curmudgeon about this. "Something has changed? Without anyone informing me? I want to do things the way I always have!" I'm still not sure I understand why we're not supposed to link years. The articles on individual days are certainly mostly trivial and unconnected, but the articles on years can provide useful context. I certainly don't generally support overlinking, but I don't see why years would be an example of that. Also, one of the reasons overlinking is bad is not only because it usually involves links to useless articles, but because it does so in an unpredictable manner. Whereas links on years are very predictable, and thus don't suffer from all of the same problems (and also, I think, are rarely useless). But I doubt this is the place for that argument. john k (talk) 18:29, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I think the general problem with overlinking is when words are linked for no apparent reason, with links attaching to random words rather than to terms that are significant in the article. You see this in a lot of poor articles. john k (talk) 18:42, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Task Force coordinators for WP:NOVELS?

October Newsletter - Novels Project

I shall be releasing the next newsletter sometime within the first week of October, which is the same plan i shall do each month. The closing date for submissions will be the last day of each month. For the October newsletter i will be starting a new section called 'In Focus' which will be where your submission shall be placed, which will replace 'Novel-related news' which is really just a filler of various non related news items. I been thinking on what would be best as a submission. For yourself it would be good if you spoke on what work you do as a Co-ordinator (i know you do other positions also but please just speak on this role as Co-ordinator as later newsletter issues will have members speak on the other positions) and the role you play in the Novels Project and also why we need more Co-ordinator's to assist (this will help give those wishing to sit for the elections an idea of what the job entails and why they are needed). The idea being that each month i will have a different member 'In Focus' who speaks on his work and explains what is involved in that job or task force. This way information on each job and task force will be read and can be helpful in encouraging others to take on a job role and know what it entails, plus gives information on the various task forces, to encourage more members to join. I plan to add the inactive members to the newsletter subscription in the hope that they may return at some stage to the Project (they can always unsubscribe if they wish).

If you can post your submission on my talk page when completed (by at least the last day of September) and try to make it less than 150 words (200 words maximum), i will add it when i prepare the next newsletter. Regards Boylo (talk) 02:49, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Got your message. The problem with having the newsletter sent to all the active members is that i know there are members who dont even wish to receive the newsletter, not sure why, but they have even repeated in the subscribers list they are a member but dont wish the newsletter. Also there are Wiki editors who are not members of the Project who wish to receive the newsletter, maybe just to be informed on what is happening in our Project. So i found all these problems when trying to work out who wanted to subscribe. Plus some even just wished a link without any newsletter, so thats why i made that special list, so the newsletter would be subscribed by themselves rather than from a members list and made it as a collapseable menu to try and keep everyone happy with its format. I am still to sort out who actually does and doesnt wish the newsletter and will need to go thru the old subscribers listing. Anyway this is why i made a special subscribers list seperate from members list. But i can make it so subscriptions are from the members list if you wish, but then those who dont wish receive the newsletter will have to resign from Project to avoid the newsletter and those who are not members wishing the newsletter will have no choice but to join the Project. I wont add those inactive members to newsletter now. So let us know your thoughts on this now after my explaination. It would be easier just having it from members list, but as i said there will be those unhappy about us doing that. Boylo (talk) 01:00, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
After looking at some other Projects i see your point better. We need to really clean the slate and we redo things. I think that old subscribers listing made things too complex and we need to slimline the Project. Also i notice many of those subscribers have been inactive for a long time. So if you can just have only active members listed before the end of September, the next newsletter will be distributed only to them. There should be no reason why they shouldnt ALL get the newsletter and also no reason why non members should receive it. So it will be much easier to just send it out to all active members only. I will keep as a collapseable menu so it dont take up too much space on a members talkpage. Boylo (talk) 01:37, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Aaron Eckhart

Hi Yllosubmarine, listen, if you have time, do you think you can copy-edit Aaron Eckhart's article? The reason I ask, I am trying to aim the article to FA status. I would appreciate it if you can, if not, its still cool. :) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 19:02, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Nobel Prize

Here you go, I move the discussion here.

On an unrelated note I was glad to see you won the battle with conservatives who were trying to devote an entire section of Doris Lessing's page to her 9/11 statements, put in out of context and made to portray her and the [Nobel Prize]] in a critical light. Looking forward to this year's noble prize winner. It should be announced within the coming weeks. So exciting to think that its almost here again. I hope it will be an American author. We haven't won one in a long time, since 1990 and for some ridiculous reason that was given to Toni Morrison, who was a one-trick pony and not even that major a literary figure in the US. I have a bet going that its going to be Thomas Pynchon this year.--Robert Waalk (talk) 20:31, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Unassessed novels and "monobook.js"

Hi,

I notice that your User:Yllosubmarine/monobook.js keeps appearing in the Category:Unassessed novel articles category. I believe that is because you make a strightforward reference to the assessment code javascript that used to be available from Outriggr. I have my own version which I have been developing (particularly for NovelsWikiProject) and also quote differently in my User:Kevinalewis/monobook.js. If you would like to make use of it then do. As I say it is still under development so there are a few little "buglets". If you feel your way open to use it I would appreciate some second opinions, advice on features, comment etc. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:43, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

the "NovelsWikiProject ? Start/High" with question mark was in the code I inherited. I assume it was added as a prompt that, this was "just what is currently there". In other words a "don't just use these settings" think about a possible change. Don't know what you think. I have implemented task force importance in a temporary way which works but is a bit inelegant. Also it doesn't support multiple task force assignment, which I would like to support at some time. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
It might be better if you replace the code in your Monobook.js with the code in my Monobook.js from the // User:Kevinalewis/projecttagger.js tag.

I didn't mean you to include my whole Monobook.js. Although you are free to do it that way if you wish but it does mean that any changes I make to scripts I want to use will naturally be included and any settings I use will come across to you as well. If you don't follow what I mean, get back to me. Thanks. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:36, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Oh yes. Doing it this way will mean that it should stop your monobook.js appearing in the unassessed category. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:49, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Did you ever get this working. It is piling away fine for me. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:57, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I am not making myself plain - obviously.

copy these lines as they are into your monobook.js

Not sure what is going on there - I have changed mine to exactly what you have and it works fine for me. Are you using IE or Firefox (I use Firefox) :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:20, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
I have just tried IE and it works fine. However you might like to experiment by copying the contents of my monobook.js into yours and then if that works trim what you don't need. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:26, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Did you ever get this working. It is piling away fine for me. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:57, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Shame. If you try again let me know. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:04, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Did this last change work. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:00, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Wonderful. I notice you changed to working primarily with WPBio. Be aware that the last box (if you have it) is meant as a catchall and I had it loaded with content for the "novels task force importance" material. I need to do this a different way eventually. Anyway any comments / requests / problems etc. let me know. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:18, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Novels Project Elections

I got your blurb for next newsletter and will probably work on the newsletter this weekend. I never received any news from the Task Forces so wont be supply much news other than from our own Project. Will you be doing the elctions for this newsletter also ? As will need to supply links to that. Boylo (talk) 02:10, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Greetings and a request

Hello there, Maria. I've just finished reconstructing the article about prominent women's suffrage activist Emmeline Pankhurst, and I'd be honored if you'd take a look, official peer review-style or not. Thanks in advance for any comments you'd care to offer. Scartol • Tok 19:05, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Fantastic – thanks so much! The weekend is fine; I'm in no rush. I'll see if I can't have a look at your bear FAC too, now that I have a little time on my hands (sort of.. I have stacks of papers I need to grade soon). Thanks again. Scartol • Tok 19:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey there.. I know you've got your hands full with Crane-man, but I wonder if I could nudge you to check Mrs. P before next weekend? The only reason I ask is because the library books are due at the end of the month and I've already renewed them to the maximum. Cheers! Scartol • Tok 12:43, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Novels Project Newsletter - October

The newsletter is in final draft. I did end up finding the link to the Elections, but see some details are still yet to be updated (such as when the election starts and ends), so noted that in the newsletter, just in case its not done before being sent out. You know where to find the newsletter so check it out and let me know what you think. Regards Boylo (talk) 09:59, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I did submit the newsletter to bot, but as the user is away on holidays am unsure how long till it will be delivered. Seem to have some problem with each issue. I did make some changes to election page. Extended the Noms date to give more time for candidates to apply, increased candidates from 2 to 3 but maybe it should be 4 including yourself, made question time during voting phrase as its best left to then. Am unsure if i will stand myself as i get very busy this time of year and may actually have to take a break from wikipedia also. Boylo (talk) 02:19, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I was recommended another bot so will see if i can get the delivery done soon. It maybe a good idea if you do mention the elections on the Novels Project talk page (with link) just in case the newsletter is delayed. Someone did comment on the newsletter distribution to my talk page (probably best you read it yourself). After replying to them they now have joined, so seems your idea is working. Leader of the Flocke

Tyler Durden was wrong.

Congratulations on your most recent FA. Even Stephen Colbert would agree that we need carefully researched, comprehensive information about the bears of the world. Kudos to you for your fine work! Scartol • Tok 11:38, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Hola! How's life been on Wiki and otherwise? Congrats on Flocke. Looks like you're getting quite close on Stevie too! Remember our talk about Conrad a few months back? I finally got around to starting a stub on Charles Marlow. You don't happen to know of any good Conrad sources that talk about him, do you? --JayHenry (talk) 01:44, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Your sig

Hi Yllosubmarine. Your sig is a bit confusing - I just spent some time looking for a contribution from you before realising you'd signed with a different name. Is there a reason why you have a different sig name and username? --Dweller (talk) 14:44, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I could look into changing your name for you if you like to User:Maria or User:María or something similar if those have been nabbed by SUL accounts elsewhere (which seems likely). --Dweller (talk) 14:53, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

History of a Six Weeks' Tour

Could you tell me where to find these sources

Because, I have have Galenet and Jstore online databanks and neither had any worthwhile information.--Robert Waalk (talk) 00:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio's Nationality

Stephen Crane PR

Hi Maria, I thought Awadewit was going to review Stephen Crane, so I made a few comments and took it off the backlog. If you need more comments, please drop me a line (looks pretty good to me though). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:26, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

  • No problem, I just review the oldest PR requests each day and the article was the oldest left, so I made some comments on it. I am sure I missed plenty of things to comment on ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:00, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

There I was, looking at the FAC list...

  The Literary Barnstar
For Stephen Crane, whose biography will make a wonderful FA and will give reviewers a break from roads, hurricanes, and TV episodes. As wonderful and necessary as those things are, we all know books are far superior. :) Awadewit (talk) 20:36, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Yay! Huzzah! and Hooray! Nice work, once again. Scartol • Tok 13:43, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Dol Guldur GA Review

Good article reassessment for Dol Guldur

Dol Guldur has been nominated for a good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article.

I know you expressed some concerns about the GA nomination, and as the article hasn't improved I've begun the process. I hope you find the time to help with the review. --Davémon (talk) 21:36, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators/October 2008

Sorry to see your withdrawal. As I did it last time I can appreciate the dilemma. However if I could prevail on you to reconsider. I for one have greatly appreciated what you have been able to do and as a more knowledgable person within the field are better suited to the role - even if more as a "non executive chairperson" might. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:03, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

If you mean more knowledgeable than me, than you are definitely right, Keven; if you didn't, than I'll say that now. :) Also, I agree with you wholeheartedly...assuming no one else runs, I'm going to be the lead coordinator (Kevin says that he will only be an assistant), and I'm not sure I want to do that...I have absolutely no experience! Please reconsider....cheers, —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 05:09, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much!

I'm blushing! You are wonderful! By the way, if you have a moment, could you drop by the Reception history of Jane Austen peer review? There are some questions that you might be able to answer better than I. If you don't have time, no problem. Awadewit (talk) 14:59, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Novel's Collaboration of the Month

The article you voted on, Novel, has been selected as collaboration of the month. Please lend your services to improving this article, and see our thread on the WikiProject Novel general forum, we've been bouncing around ideas on what to do and how to organize our additions which will be mainly focused on the 20th century novel where their is currently no section. I was thinking we could do a quick intro cover, then split it into several sub-sections on major developments in the novel. The ones currently on my mind were fantasy, stream of conciousness, minalamism, modernism, and post-modernism, as those were some of the major developments of the last century. Perhaps also discussion of crime noir, and the development of the murder mystery as a tenet of pulp and popular fiction. I even think we should have a section on Science fiction for the major figures and developments. That leaves us with a very wide, and broard encompassing project that I think could draw in a large number of people with different interests who would be apply themselves to this project, thus adding to the quality of the work that would get done. The 20th century section should be the longest section of the article, since more happened and changed in the 20th century than in all the previous four centuries, (going back to Don Quixote), combined.--Robert Waalk (talk) 23:11, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Stephen Crane FA

Just a hello to say congratulations for the recognition of your work on the Crane article. I'm beginning to see how wikipedia can take up much of one's time! Keep up the good work (or should that be good-FA work?) but be sure to maintain your focus on the important things in life! Sillyfolkboy (talk) 02:37, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

The important things in life? Ah... you mean like polar bear sagas! --JayHenry (talk) 02:39, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Damn that bear and his resistance of strategically placed delicacies! Sillyfolkboy (talk) 02:45, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

A title of a short story

Hello, Maria. I come upon here for a matter regarding some short story's title as The ed17's suggestion. Could you read my question left on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/GeneralForum#Do you know the title of a short story? and help me to find the title? I read the story several years ago, but could not remember the author and title. Thanks.--Caspian blue 23:07, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Copyedit request

Maria, you left me a note saying you'd be willing to review a FAC for me recently. I have Amazing Stories at FAC right now, and though Tony has supported he has suggested I find a copyeditor. If you have the time, I would appreciate either a copyedit or an independent review. If not, no problem -- I'm not running into a lot of opposes, so this isn't urgent (yet, anyway!). Thanks either way. Mike Christie (talk) 23:18, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks -- any time you can spare would be great. I see you're trying to take a wikibreak, and since Awadewit just took a pass through the article, if you've only time to look at one section, could I suggest this one? Awadewit identified it as a section of prose that slowed her down. Thanks again. Mike Christie (talk) 12:58, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Ripley Hitchcock

Why did you change the reference from ' to " for the essay title? Is that the American way? In British unversities, essays go 'like this'.

It looks like there is no reference for this, 'He graduated from Harvard University and started work as a journalist for The New York Tribune in 1882. In 1890, he became literary adviser for D. Appleton & Company, in which capacity he edited Edward Noyles Wescott's narrative David Harum (1898) into a bestseller, later made into a film. From 1902 to 1906, he worked for A. S. Barnes as vice president'. I read your reason in the edit summary, but I would be at a loss to find a reference if I were to stumble into this page and need to use it for a paper.
Thanks for your interest in the topic.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:37, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Reception history of Jane Austen

We are at FAC and I was wondering if you could scroll down and check out Brianboulton's comment. When you read about the adaptations, how much were the early BBC ones mentioned? Are they sufficiently notable to include in a summary of all Austen adaptations? Thanks. Awadewit (talk) 23:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
